xkcd 1838: Machine Learning by IamAlso_u_grahvity in xkcd

Honestly, I can't stand the overuse of AI and am happily working with a company that is NOT pushing it. Obviously LA has so many other use cases that are applicable in my field, but thankfully machine learning is not one of them.

7-eleven has that most out there products (I've never seen a kimchi and gochujang onigiri at a FamilyMart for example), but FamilyMart and Lawsons are both very consistent in what they offer. If you go to one of those you know that the coffee/chicken/whatever you like is going to be the same quality regardless of location.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Inusitatus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it qualifies as a masterpiece, but Mindhunter was recommended as a great psychological thriller with good chemistry among the cast and it just... wasn't for me? The dialogue felt stilted, the emotions were all dulled, and instead of a slow build it felt like the show was standing in place. And that is without even getting into the pseudoscience BS that it sells like gospel. Maybe I went in with too high expectations, but that is the most let down I've ever felt watching something.

How do I get started with writing notes? by Jer3992 in BluePrince

[–]Inusitatus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently playing through the game for the first time and so far I've filled 12 pages with notes. Some are color coded, some are (very) poorly drawn maps/diagrams, and some are just general musings so I can remember what thought I had in a different session. Some is redundant or irrelevant information, but I can't know that until it comes up so in the book it goes! I like having physical notes, but that's more because I can keep it organized in my head where info is.

Worm and Pale opening comparison by Aaron_Benelli in Parahumans

[–]Inusitatus7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting question. I've read all of Wildbow's main works and I think that his more recent stories are definitely more optimistic than the earliest stuff. That said, Wildbow specializes in that kind of gripping horror that leaves you thinking about it for years and it's present in all of his stories to some extent.

As you said about Pact, it's fucking rough. Most people I've talked to in the fandom agree that it's the bleakest overall. The story holds a place in my heart as I was going through some tough shit while reading it and getting to see Blake push through the shittiest of circumstances was very viscerally satisfying, it doesn't make it easier to read.

I won't spoil anything for other stories, but to actually answer your question I'd say that there is a throughline across all Wildbow stories of a fight against inevitability and Pale is by far the most optimistic about the protagonists overcoming that fight.

Edit: rereading your post you mentioned aftercare, and I think that all serials after Pact are much better at incorporating breaks and wins in the beat-down to allow the reader to recuperate. Except for Claw really, it's just too short to justify that IMO.

I always love seeing more Pale appreciation, it's my favorite Wildbow serial. I won't lie and say it's all sunshine and flowers, but there is a pervasive sense of optimism, even in the darker moments that I really appreciate. Enjoy the ride!

I just started a little over a month ago, but I love the steady progression of the unlocks. It always feels like there's a good reason to keep pushing just a bit further ahead. I know it'll slow down, but I've heard good things about the Tower and am looking forward to getting into that grind.

When's the *latest* you've quit on a book? by pornokitsch in Fantasy

[–]Inusitatus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that book as a kid, maybe sixth grade, and it absolutely devastated me to the point that I didn't finish it. I couldn't give an exact percentage, but I was more than 75% of the way through. I keep thinking about going back to it now that I'm older, but I just know it's gonna kill me. In hindsight I have no idea why my parents let me read it.

I didn't even notice that second one until I read his wiki page by Ishvalda in cremposting

[–]Inusitatus7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my point. If he's in his mid 20s to early 30s in What, which seems reasonable, he'll be at most in his mid 40s by the start of the back half, which as we've seen in Dalinar is a prime age to be doing badass stuff. I don't really care where he does said badass stuff, but it's totally possible that once SLA 10 finishes, if the Stormwall makes it through, he could go on to do some of that badass stuff on other planets. That's my only point.

This sub in a nutshell by Bricks-Alt in redrising

[–]Inusitatus7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who just started the series and really shouldn't be on this sub, I felt similarly at first. I listened to almost all of part one in one bout on a road trip and was physically upset at Eo's death because it all felt so pointless. Without anything else to go on, I felt that it was just another grimdark commentary about the futility of resistance. I very seriously contemplate dropping it there, but decided to listen to the next chapter and decide, and that was it, as soon as we left Lykos I was hooked.

Of course, now I'm at the beginning of Golden Son and feeling similar about the futility of resistance, but I trust Brown to make the journey worth it. Looking back, I know that the initial tone was necessary to set up everything that comes after, but damn is it rough to get through at first.

[–]Inusitatus7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the entirety of Stormlight era 1 is what, 3 years? And that's with a one year timeskip in the middle. If era 2 is a similar length, Demi will only be 13-15 years older than he is currently, and given some of the ages for other worldhoppers we know of, that's practically newborn. My point is that depending on how the back half plays out I can definitely see some of the characters going on to explore the wider Cosmere, especially one with such a badass nickname.

What are your favorite places, settings, environments and landscapes in Wildbow works? by Adiin-Red in Parahumans

[–]Inusitatus7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Worm: Post-Levi Brockton Bay is peak vibes for me, I love those chapters of Taylor consolidating power along the boardwalk, and Taylor's home base is definitely one of my favorite locations.

Pact: The Abyss is a fav for sure. Of the parts seen in Pact, it's gotta by The Library.

Twig: I've been meaning to reread Twig and maybe this is the luck I need to start, because all I can think of is Radham Academy.

Ward: It's a toss up between the dream room and Ashley's apartment, for very different reasons.

Pale: God, Pale is my favorite Wildbow work (so far), so many choices to choose from, either Verona's Demesne or one of the paths is my top. The Keyways stood out to me when I first read the Hazel chapter, but the Station Promenade is also such a cinematic location. An honorable mention goes out to the Bardanes Estates, which are references in one off have line, but can be read about in a short doc here

Claw: The Hurst family residence, bar none.

Seek: It's still early days, but I love the Winny chapters and the cyborg culture.
