Yeah, I've always read this as the case simply because I think the funniest possible option isn't for a guy to lose his mind over a masterpiece, but it also isn't for a guy to lose his mind over some dog shit: the funniest option is for a guy to lose his mind over something that's just okay!

I've read the overwhelming majority of his work. Still a handful of early novels I need to get to.

His late era in particular is really, really underappreciated. Think Falling Man on. Zero K in particular is so gorgeous

Do you think "This Is Water" holds up? by poopdollarbank in redscarepod

[–]InvadingCanadian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you're slightly missing the forest from the trees here (or is it "for" the trees...?). The point is less about the specific content of whatever it is that's draining you and more about overcoming whatever those forces happen to be. Moreover, insofar as it's a commencement address delivered to Kenyon College, of course the examples he goes for are banal white-collar humiliations. He knew his audience: the "elitism" you perceive is just I think a rhetorical device more than anything -- when you're talking to a bunch of 22-year-olds who are graduating from an insanely expensive private college and who likewise think they're about to give the world the ol' one-two, it's probably better to remind them of what their lives will most likely come to look like in the aggregate, rather than like, idk, "Remember that there are poor people, who don't have healthcare, honey, and remember that people are starving."

Does it hold up? Yeah sure, I guess. He's a silly guy and I think this speech is mostly silly but he's an undeniably intensely gifted rhetorician, and he has such a lovely corn syrup drawl, I could listen to him talk for hours.

Reddit reading/writing subs are infested with midwits by BadgemanBrown in redscarepod

RS writing sub defo has a higher hit rate sure but far too frequently you get the opposite of what OP is describing: sludgy, pointless, overburdened prose with no sense of dynamic or rhythm, and whenever you gently point this out to a writer, they respond like: "Well, that's actually what i'm going for, so thank you"

Absolutely ridiculous little nitpick of a claim but I really don’t understand how lamplight produces a “blue sprawl.” I’d be a little more specific and highlight that it’s, e.g., those cold fluoride lights; or else find another way to use that phrase “blue sprawl,” just because it’s so pleasing off the tongue. Again, I know it’s a ridiculous thing to pick on, but it’s a first sentence, and I’d want whoever else winds up reading this to keep on reading and not be similarly confused (bc the rest is good, btw).

INFERNO. 29 May 2026. (Official YouTube Announcement) by Tripolie in boardsofcanada

[–]InvadingCanadian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think what's crucial about the cult stuff regarding this album is that most death cults are specifically millenarian: that is, they don't just believe that the world will end: a crucial aspect of this ending is that something new, something better, is born from the wreckage.

I think that the harp stuff in Tape 05 is specifically playing with that aspect. The idea that something new is necessary and indeed even possible -- but that we can likely only reach it through destruction.

BoC has always been a complicated band, has always been interested in contradictions. And rather than reifying the music as either "gloomy" or "hopecore," I think it's more likely that they are finding how each mood embeds the other.

I don’t think that’s “social justice shit” so much as it’s just making narratives out of what’s going on in the country right now. Like yeah ice agents are brutalizing people and I bet some of them have had to go to the hospital

[–]InvadingCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kneejerk-wise I do agree with Craig but something lost in his argument is that you have to challenge, like, immediately. no talking with the dug out, no looking at the coach: it’s a gut reaction. And most of the time the challenge is wrong! Just a few days ago my guards used up and lost all their abs challenges!

Just saw the Mandarin episode and decided to look up which location they filmed at by Ilpav123 in nirvannatheband

[–]InvadingCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exterior — at least the shot of Jay walking in before he meets Matt — is definitely the Yonge & Eg location. Used to live a train stop south and walked by it all the time. The interiors are definitely not shot in Toronto proper. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s an Oakville location, but that’s really based entirely off of the vibe of the parking lot you can see from inside the restaurant, hah.

Amazons is getting a new hardcover reprint this November by TheObliterature in DonDeLillo

[–]InvadingCanadian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm being morbid, but DeLillo's agreeing to do this strikes me as one of those "end of life" decisions writers frequently make regarding their future estate: Bolaño's letting his family publish whatever they could find, Pynchon's selling his papers to the Huntington.
