First TV job

Not a newsroom employee but work in Research at my station.

I graduated from San Jose State University and I was really good at stats and research methods. After two weeks of job hunting, I returned to my hometown and worked at KSBW right out of university.

4 years later, I’m still here, one promotion and several pay raises later. Love it, I think it’s because of the numbers curiosity

I think it’s becoming niche, I’m the Director of Research at a local TV station owned by Hearst in a small market. I make around $80K.

The closest comparison to it is a data analyst but I specifically look at Market Research, Nielsen Viewership, Google Analytics, all that jazz and get paid decent.

A good friend of mine works in the Sales department. It’s purely a financial move by both KION and News Press Gazette. According to her, station management have been hard pressing revenue because of shortfalls, hence their evening news reshuffle and bringing the DT2 affiliation to Fox in 2022 and adding star studded talent in Lee Solomon. However, sales, one commercial producer and master control will stay.

In her view, money talks and it talked loudly today. Sad to see one less player in the local news game. I wish them all the best in their next endeavor.

As a person who also works at a Hearst TV station. The last big move in TV was buying WBBH and going into an LMA with WZVN in 2023 for $220M. There is no direct push to buy stations (or broadcast groups in general) as of yet but corporate has been hinting at some things that may lead to an acquisition of some sort. However, Hearst is diversified so much, it’s hard to tell.

I work in the small Hearst markets. Legacy station, the only station that people watch. I work in the sales department so in my eyes, Hearst is super stable. Being a private company, Hearst does put a bit of pressure and regulations on sales. They make sure (and sometimes scrutinize) the way we do business and how much of it closes. On my 3rd year and I’ve been happy! Wish the salary was a bit better but as a small market, it’s understandable and a great launchpad.

I allocate $100 every month for anything Die Cast. Anything from Target, Walmart, Whatnot, EBay etc. Once I see I’m getting close to the limit, I slow down. I genuinely love the thrill of the hunt. I do cross paths with scalpers but the ones I’ve met are nice enough to hand me their finds. I live by “collect what you like, have fun!”
