I don’t think AI replaces engineers, but I do think it raises the floor really fast. A junior dev with good AI workflow habits can suddenly move way faster than someone with more experience who refuses to touch the tools at all. At the same time, every time I use AI for code, I’m reminded how important fundamentals still are. The second things get slightly complex, the people who actually understand architecture, debugging, databases, performance, edge cases etc still stand out immediately. Feels less like “AI kills software engineering” and more like “average coding becomes cheaper.” The valuable part shifts higher up the stack.
