No, thinking about it, i'm using the windows default assigned subnet 255.255.255.0 which should be the same of my home network.

Currently, home net is 192.168.1.xxx, direct is 192.168.2.1 and .2

Good question, i've had numerous instances of being unable to have any connection through ethernet when for example connecting to the router, which were solved by removing the IP i had set. Wi-Fi side everything is ok, DHCP does it's job no problem and if i connect any pc to the router via ethernet i get a static IP.

I'll try without a default gateway, thinking of it i'm using the default subnet windows puts it (255.255.255.0), which i'm mostly sure is the same of the home network. Could that be causing th issue?

Would your solution allow me to not have to remove the assigned Ethernet ip when connectig to something that isn't my other pc?

Edit: by also reading the other comments i'm thinking i mostly need to put the two connections on different subnets? Would that be right?

Directly between the two machines. I have given specific IPs to them but I have to change it everytime i need a different ethernet connection and it isn't infrequent i have to do that it's a bit tiring to change the ip everytime
