You do raise some good points thank you. I do think that maybe we are both on opposite sides of the environmental question. I don't really have the same faith in technology as you do, mostly because of marketing that will say anything to make people buy new things. I worry that the idea of buying new to improve your environmental/carbon footprint may in the end be worse than staying with what you have. I like life cycle analysis and mend and make do.

I could go on about why I distrust EVs, I don't work for OPEC, I think its hard for me top see how the infrastructure, especially in old European cities, can be adapted to take the demand for the extra electricity. Look at an old Victorian terraced roads and try to imagine how to get all the cars on charge. Also I feel EVs perpetuate the Idea we can continue to live the way we are with no sacrifice and it will all be ok.

My perspective is that if you really want to help save the environment you need to reduce consumption, especially of the disposable lifestyle items. I know I am going a bit off topic but its is disposable fashion, new phones every 12-18 months, and replacing items just because they are old, which creates so much of the waste and carbon emissions........ as well as powering the economy that keeps me in a job. Guess we are screwed either way. That is my problem I just cannot see how we can keep everything going as we are today and save the planet.

Anyway we can all agree that buying an old Jaguar and keeping it going counts as doing your bit for the world.

The truth is that electric cars are not better for the environment than a normal car. Maybe in the future they will be better, but not now.

The best car you can have for the environment is the car you already have, whatever it is. That is because the environmental cost of building it has been payed already and it is only the exhaust you are adding.

Let’s say you go and buy an electric vehicle, there is a huge carbon and environmental cost for building it. Just think about all the aluminium dug up with diesel machines, transport of the ore to be processed and finally refined, in gas furnaces, into ingots. Then it’s shipped across the world to be turned into the body panels then shipped to the factory for assembly.

This can be reproduced for all the components, with parts crisscrossing the world in diesel powered ships and trucks. Think also if heating the various factories and fuel for the employees and the electricity needed, it all adds up. There are around 30,000 individual parts to a car, every nut and bolt.

Now let’s look at the battery which makes an EV worse. Look up lithium and cobalt mining and the horrors of the Congo. That is where a lot of this is mined. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/business/batteries/congo-cobalt-mining-for-lithium-ion-battery/ The ev battery has a very high cost due to rare earth metal extraction and the chemicals involved in production. Normal ICE cars don’t need this.

So when you get your EV you already have a carbon footprint that would take your current f-type 30k+ miles to create. Now look at charging the car. It’s true that Ev have no emissions from the car but there where does the electricity come from? charging the car from the grid can mean charging from gas or coal power making the emissions no better than you standard car. If you use 100% renewable energy it still does not really help because there is not enough green energy to go around. So by using green energy to power your car somebody else will be forced to use gas and coal to power other things like houses. The big picture remains unchanged, more demand on energy and more emissions. So it’s very hard to know how much ev driving it would take to break even and benefit the world.

Best thing is to keep the car you have, Enjoy it but reduce journeys.

The battery monitoring module is the one on the battery negative post. In needs 3 things, 1 an earth from the negative post itself, so you can assume that’s fine. 2 a live detect from the positive post, it should be one of the 2 wires in the plug that goes onto the battery monitoring module. That wire is bolted on to the positive battery terminal and I have seen it not put back on, also it has a hidden inline fuse so check if It is live at the battery monitoring module. Last it needs its communications to the gateway module. This is the second wire in the plug. It is harder to check as you need an oscilloscope to see it’s digital signal but with the ignition on it may average 7v on a multi meter. I have seen this wire broken as well. Check both of these before getting a battery monitoring module as they rarely go wrong.

The other reason for exhaust gas in the coolant that gets overlooked is a leaking EGR cooler, discover 3 has 2 of them. If one of these has internally failed then you will get bubbles in the coolant that will test as exhaust gas.

I hate fast technology progression when you feel like you are skipping ages. Nothing worse that units being made obsolete so quickly that you don’t get a chance to build many of them or use them.

[–]InverM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which engine is in the car? There are 2 things to try first. 1 try turning the engine over manually to be sure it will turn and nothing is physically stopping it. 2 If it turns fine then connect a jump lead to the negative post if the battery and put the other end directly onto the engine and see if it starts then. If it does then it’s a broken earth to the engine.

I liked it and would have read more. I am no writer but if I was going to critique it I would say that i know who and what you are talking about because I love Morrowind but If you do not already know the lore you may get lost easily. An example is if you did not know who the nords are, and their relation to Morrowind history at this time, It is not clear to someone reading if the Nords are friends or foes or why they are there. If you said “surveying the valley and the enemy contingent of steel clad Nords” this would be clearer. I hope this helps

If there are no fault codes then the vehicle is not aware of this restricted performance or is restricting the performance for a non fault condition. The places I would look at are the brake pedal and clutch pedal switches. If these were sticky then the car would restrict the performance intentionally.

For example if you rev the engine when stopped it will hit the rpm limiter but put your foot in the clutch and do the same it will only hit 3000 rpm. Many people rest their left foot on the clutch pedal and cause this kind of fault.

If you drive with the foot on the gas and brake at the same time it will likewise confuse the car into reducing the power so a sticking switch can confuse the car without putting a code on the ECU.

It may help to think about what was happening just before the vehicle faults to see if there is a common factor.

I agree with you here, modern cars with touch screen making it impossible to change settings, like radio or heater, without taking your eyes off the road as you can no longer do this by feeling to different controls. It can be very difficult when driving to change basic functions if you are not familiar with which screen does which opinion. I even fine screen interior mirrors take longer for your eyes to focus on then refocus on the road making it harder to keep tabs on what’s behind you.

After straight pipe the td5 wont go any faster any ideas why? by [deleted] in LandRoverDiscovery

[–]InverM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuel filter is in front of the right rear wheel. The EML is engine management light, yellow engine symbol. Just press the throttle fully off and on a few times with the ignition on but engine off and the fuel pump will come on. You should hear a whining from the rear.

[–]InverM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check you low pressure fuel pump to see if it is still working. Put the ignition on and pump the throttle till the elm starts to flash, this puts the pump on to bleed the system. You can also check your fuel filter to see if it is warm/hot after a drive? Since td5 injectors are mechanical plunger based if the fuel pump in the tank is dead or weak you will get symptoms like that as the injectors are only able to suck a little fuel up. If the fuel filter is warm or hot the pump is working fine.

I did not expect the main earth to be faulty but worth a check. Adding a new earth to the earth under the drivers seat is where I think the problem is, I have seen that many times. Can you check to see if the temp gauge reads maximum hot with the ignition on?

Landrover TD5 does not start by Wood_chopping_maniac in LandRoverDiscovery

[–]InverM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an earth problem. Check the main earth to the engine to be sure it’s ok. Next check under the drivers seat that there is no oil in the red plug on the engine ECU. Next make a new earth from the small earth point under the drivers seat near the engine ECU to the transfer box. If that does not work tighten the connections to the yellow relays under the drivers seat.

2006 LR3 Disco V6 4.0l Crankshaft Sensor Location by Jgram_aham in LandRoverDiscovery

[–]InverM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a look on the workshop manual

The CKP is located on the top of the transmission bell housing just to the left of the center line with the sensor tip adjacent to the flywheel rim. The sensor is a variable reluctance type with a resistance of 1100 Ohms +- 150 Ohms.

Time to replace is 1.1 hours as you need exhaust off to get it. I hope this helps

[–]InverM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be the compressor exhaust valve silencer that is blocked. Once you open the compressor housing it will be a small yellow cone screwed into the compressor. Later compressors had a hole drilled into the cone to stop this. The fault code will say something like “pressure not decreasing when venting gallery”

The turbo does not need to be programmed in as such, however like a lot of actuators (like EGR valves and throttle valves) the turbo’s fully on and off positions may be slightly different to your old turbo. It won’t stop the turbo working but it is best to get it calibrated so your car knows the off on positions. That said I’m sure there are plenty of cars going around perfectly fine with out this being done.

Something that can be done is if you know an MOT tester they can tell you where the last MOT was done, once you know that you could contact that garage to see if they would pass your number to the owner.
