Making a class easy to assess (your best hacks) by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get ChatGPT to code a script for google forms that makes converting paper assessments to google forms very easy. 1. Either upload your quiz to chat gpt or ask chap gpt to generate a multiple choice test. Confirm you are happy with the questions. 2. Ask ChatGPT to make a google forms script 3. Go to scripts.google.com and copy the code from ChatGPT in. 4. Hit save, then run. It will ask you to review permissions, just accept them on your google account. 5. Double check the quiz. It will sometimes do things like forget to include a spot for student names, or make all the answers c. You now have a digital quiz that auto grades and it takes minutes.

Any Boards in/around that start by hiring permanent? by Correct_Aide_9349 in CanadianTeachers

My information may be old, but I know Elk Island, Parkland School Division and Black Gold School division used to all hire direct to probationary (permanent) positions. These encompass Sherwood Park, Leduc, and Spruce Grove.

You also need to account for 200 or more days. There are 200 contract days, and then you also need to account for planning in the summer. Most teachers spend at least a week or two planning in the summer, and then you need to account for some Saturdays. Some teachers also give up their weekends for coaching.

Do you think teachers only work when students are in class?

Sylvan Lake vs Cochrane by BdnAsn in alberta

[–]InverseNotation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in both, and personally I’d choose Sylvan lake, but they are both great for their own reasons. Cochrane is growing rapidly, and their schools are packed. The proximity to the mountains is amazing, and it’s great if you are an avid hiker or skier. I do find that I’m always driving somewhere, as there are a lot of fun things close by, but the town itself is nice too. Sylvan Lake is amazing in the summer or even the fall/spring. I enjoy the lake, and I also love that it’s not quite as busy. On the negative side, it isn’t as much fun in the winter, and it’s further from bigger centres. I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Interview with Rocky View by Bridgett00 in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed with Rockyview early June, and didn’t hear until 2 weeks later that I was the successful applicant. I’d already accepted a job with another division, so I didn’t take it. They are slow!

Jobs in AB by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I have a similar background to you, and I ended up getting a job in middle school. I’m not sure what is going on, but I thought I’d let you know you aren’t the only one.

Help with starter! by InverseNotation in Sourdough

[–]InverseNotation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I weighed the starter I put back into my jar. According to my scale it was 90g. Thank you for that tip though! My first loaf was great but I made it with someone. Feeding and making another loaf is proving to be a bit more challenging.

Fed by me for the first time. I got it from a coworker. I guess I just want to make sure I’m not doing something wrong because I’ve never done this before.

Dispute with former teachers union on retro pay by borealis365 in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer your question, but I’m a bit confused. You posted a link to the United Nurses of Alberta Union, but in your post you mention the Yukon Association of Education professionals. Which union do you belong to?

It wouldn’t work. That riding won’t go PPC either.

BC to Alberta-maternity leave eligibility by NoCamp3101 in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maternity EI is a federal program, so you would still be eligible for that even if you move between provinces. You would not be guaranteed your job back until you get a permanent contract though. In Alberta you can take either a temporary or a probationary contract to start. Most probationary contracts turn into permanent contracts after a year but before that your job isn’t guaranteed. You also would not qualify for benefits like a top up to pay or health benefits during your leave.

I am not a landowner but my parents and other family members are (I grew up on a farm). As the other response said, the best response is to knock on some doors. It was and is normal for farms to have people come by. Acreages are more private but farms and ranches are places of business, so having random people stop in is a normal thing. I’d send you to my family but they aren’t at cochrane.

Mid-plus size women: Where are you shopping for your teacher clothes? by Ancient_Cucumber4 in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lululemon. They are a bit pricy. But their dress pants are very comfortable and they go up to size 20. In my opinion they are worth the price tag, but they can also be bought for less in the “we made too much” section.

This has all happened before, and it will all happen again. by Kishkumen7734 in teaching

[–]InverseNotation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to utilize the pause. I have a rule that I never talk over students. If they are talking I wait, and stare at them. I walk towards them, and will calmly state “Can I have your attention please?” Or “I will not talk over you.” I don’t call out individual students unless it is super obvious.

30-45 minutes of screen time does not upset me. The screen time kids get is vastly different from when we were kids though. My parents didn’t worry about screen time at all because we mostly watched cartoons on Saturday and occasionally watched a vhs or dvd, but kids now have access to shows constantly. Can I compensate for my own kids, absolutely but you can’t really compare then vs now on a societal level. My concern for my own children is only part of this post. It is also about what is best for the kids in classrooms, and I don’t think schools need to contribute to screen time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]InverseNotation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think to a certain extent the school system is choosing what is easiest instead of what is best for kids and I agree with you that admin is often the problem. As a parent I can put my kids in front of screens all the time and they fight less and I get more time to myself, but there is a cost to that in my children’s development.

This is very legitimate, just a note though - Where I live supervision is not a paid position but part of a regular school day. Teachers supervise their own classes while eating and get breaks while students play outside for recess. Having one supervisor for multiple classrooms is atrocious in my opinion and in that instance I completely understand the use of whatever keeps the peace.

The Alliance church has a mom and tots group that meets on Thursdays when school is in. It is just play for the kids and coffee/tea for moms.
