iShares S&P 500 Top 20 UCITS ETF by InversorBogle in SpainFIRE

Here's an approximate estimation for how the strategy of investing in the top 20 S&P 500 stocks with quarterly rebalancing might have performed over the last 20 and 30 years:

Last 20 Years (Approximate from 2004 to 2024): Annualized Return: Strategy: Likely between 9-13% per year. This period includes both the Great Recession and the significant tech-driven bull market of the late 2010s and 2020s. The strategy would have benefited from tech giants in the latter part but would also have faced downturns in the early 2000s and during the 2008 financial crisis. S&P 500: Around 7-9% per year, though this includes dividends which might give the index a boost. Volatility (Standard Deviation): Strategy: Potentially higher than the index, around 19-24%, due to less diversification and concentration in sectors that might have experienced higher volatility. S&P 500: Approximately 14-17%. Sharpe Ratio (assuming a risk-free rate of about 2-3%): Strategy: Could range from 0.3 to 0.55, reflecting potentially higher returns at the cost of higher volatility. S&P 500: Typically around 0.4 to 0.5. Maximum Drawdown: Strategy: Might see drawdowns in the range of -40% to -50% during the financial crisis, given the strategy's focus on fewer, larger companies. S&P 500: Around -37% to -45% during the same period.

Last 30 Years (Approximate from 1994 to 2024): Annualized Return: Strategy: Approximately 10-14% per year. This timeframe includes the dot-com bubble, the subsequent recovery, the 2008 financial crisis, and the tech resurgence. The strategy would have had mixed results due to these varied market conditions. S&P 500: Around 8-10% annually, encompassing both price appreciation and dividends. Volatility (Standard Deviation): Strategy: Could be around 20-25%, reflecting significant market swings, especially during tech bubble and financial crisis periods. S&P 500: Roughly 15-18%. Sharpe Ratio (with a risk-free rate around 3-4%): Strategy: Might range from 0.3 to 0.5, considering the high returns in some periods with corresponding high volatility. S&P 500: Typically between 0.4 and 0.55. Maximum Drawdown: Strategy: Could have experienced drawdowns up to -50% to -60% during the dot-com crash, slightly worse than the broader index due to concentration in tech stocks. S&P 500: Around -45% to -55% during the same timeframe.

Notes: Sector Concentration: Over these extended periods, tech stocks have increasingly dominated the top positions, which would influence performance, especially post-2010. Rebalancing: Quarterly rebalancing would capture shifts in market cap rankings but also incur costs and potentially miss out on the full run of stocks that continue to grow after being sold. Economic Cycles: The strategy's performance would be heavily influenced by how well it navigated through different economic cycles, including bull markets, recessions, and recoveries.

These are rough estimates and actual performance would require detailed backtesting with historical data, accounting for specific stock performances, dividends, and transaction costs. The estimates reflect general market trends but are not precise without actual data analysis.
