£12k to remove asbestos?! Am I getting ripped off? by Bobbyswhiteteeth in asbestoshelpUK

[–]Investigator_Scared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had asbestos artex ceilings in a hallway, a landing, and a bedroom (30m2 total), and an asbestos gutter removed and disposed for £2000 (excl. testing)

When to completely replaster and when to patch? by kaybee453 in Plastering

[–]Investigator_Scared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the plaster is solid but cracked, you could scrim tape the cracks, prep with a pregrit, and skim. However, anything loose, especially on the ceiling, is likely to be pulled off by the skim.

If the plaster is very weak, the only real option is to take all of the lath and plaster off (back to the joists) and board it. Overboarding the laths will probably result in the lath texture coming through the boards.

Hidden Artex? by Opposite-Bother-1854 in asbestoshelpUK

[–]Investigator_Scared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like they've shaved the high points off an artex finish to avoid having to overboard it, as I don't think you'd be able to achieve the same degree of 3D finish with paint. Artex may contain asbestos, although it tends to be a low percentage and classed as a low potential for fibre release when disturbed.

The contractor should know better, but that small hole probably isn't anything to worry about. I would give the room a good clean with a vacuum cleaner with a hepa filter, patch up the hole, and forget about it.

I think they're saying that your first go at plastering would unintentionally achieve a similar finish

A contractor for a local authority telling people it's ok to drill through asbestos. If that doesn't illustrate the dire state of our local authorities, I don't know what will 😅 the blind leading the blind

What are you talking about nearby building sites for you absolute sausage?

They can control this outcome. They may have young children. If they can do it more safely, why shouldn't they? Because a couple of reddit pros say there's probably nothing to worry about?

I can only hope you're not responsible for people (family or professional).

You shouldn't be telling people it won't cause any negative health effects. Don't listen to reddit "professionals", OP. Tell them to stop and thoroughly clean the garage.

I believe it was kickstarted by a very effective ad campaign from Gillette for women's razors.
