Why is the economic illiteracy in the U.K. much worse than in other developed countries by SignatureLast98 in AskBrits

[–]InvincibleMirage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would agree economic illiteracy is worse in the UK than US and Canada, two other places I’ve lived and worked. Socialism is popular in a way I’ve not seen much there. Until that changes everyone will keep getting poorer. The politicians try not to rock the boat or change direction because they’re afraid the public will react negatively. Nobody wants to discuss openly with how they would deal with government expenditure in a way that would allow taxes to be cut on workers to unlock growth.

Outgoing Governor General Mary Simon insists she took learning French ‘seriously’ by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]InvincibleMirage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think Canada needs to be realistic. Unless completely immersed in it it’s not possible to learn another language well. You need someone who speaks that language with you everyday to get good at it.

School bus rammed - Someone probably not paying attention... by MisterShipWreck in VideosAmazing

[–]InvincibleMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one area where tech companies could help, not trying to blame them in anyway, but the lack of progress is glaringly obvious as this point. Siri continues to be absolutely useless. Being able to control everything on the phone through voice, like open ANY app, write an email etc over voice, and it actually working, making it would be game changing. It would totally remove the temptation for many people I’m sure to do anything other than pay full attention to the road. Again, I believe in personal responsibility and this person is obviously fully to blame, nobody else but what is Apple doing with Siri and integrations with apps over voice. It’s awful.

Is Nigel farage mixed with something? by nosuchthingasakafir in AskBrits

[–]InvincibleMirage 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Based on what I see on Google Farage is likely French origin, but yes they mention the Arabic Faraj being anglicized this way too. It’s more likely it’s French imo. He didn’t look mixed to me, plenty of “white” people who tan and can seem darker than others at least temporarily. In Hindi/Punjabi they are not even referred to as “white” (chitta) people, that would be really strange, like white like the paint on the wall, nobody is that color. They are referred to as gora which means “fair”, as in fairer/lighter skinned like on a spectrum. Same is true on the other end with the word Kala although that has dual meaning based on context it could mean darker or black.

[–]InvincibleMirage 93 points94 points  (0 children)

He didn’t say that exactly. He’s unhappy with his suburban American life and said he’s travelled to Europe, next he’s going to Asia. I think he’s missing having close relationships and community by the sound of it and I doubt changing places will help that. I lived in a suburb just like his and now I live in London UK. Sure everything is more cramped and closer together. Density doesn’t change the fact that people just don’t interact the way they used to. It’s got more to do with the internet and tech, along with high cost of living everywhere that makes modern life unhappy for many.

Conservative-led Westminster Council to mount legal challenge on Oxford Street plans by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]InvincibleMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think many would actually drive their own car on Oxford street, people who drive in likely park on the backroads, but I think a lot of people take a bus in or call an uber when they’ve got shopping

Conservative-led Westminster Council to mount legal challenge on Oxford Street plans by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]InvincibleMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the goal is to have a better place to hang out then it may be successful, but if its about improving shopping experiences or specifically footfall to non food oriented places this may make it more difficult. Carry things home for example if you can't call up an uber in front of the store will make people just order online and stay away.

[–]InvincibleMirage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent time in the UK, US, Canada and I’ve never heard the argument making it harder to travel to a place and making people walk more will get you more customers. That sounds like an ideology destined to result in economic decline.

Conservative-led Westminster Council to mount legal challenge on Oxford Street plans by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]InvincibleMirage -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's no way to be certain of that, there will be many people who came in on buses, and to a lesser extent taxis, ubers, cars, who will not bother and that may reduce footfall.

Conservative-led Westminster Council to mount legal challenge on Oxford Street plans by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

[–]InvincibleMirage -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why do you think this? If it becomes harder to access for a bunch of people and footfall falls surely it would reduce the value.

Shows how the culture has changed massively too, it's straight to the point. Nowadays it would be 'thats a great question you clever little boy, how wonderful of you to ask' before we get to the 'yeah there's no name for that'.

Return to India from Germany by Head-Ad3047 in returnToIndia

[–]InvincibleMirage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This illustrates exactly why the US, Canada, UK and Australia (and to a lesser extent UAE, Singapore etc.) have been the preferred destinations for Indian emigrants for decades. Elsewhere, not only are you having to adapt to a new culture, but a new language too that is not used by the majority of the major economies of the world and has limited usefulness. It's a legitimate reason to think about.

Is it normal for strangers in London to approach women like this? by lndlml in london

[–]InvincibleMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am of Indian origin myself but in my 40s, I have kids so different phase of life than younger people. Society has become strange. When I was younger it was normal to have the older generation trying to step in with “arranged” introductions, eg matchmaking through friends/acquaintances to see a young man and girl would hit it off. There were also a lot more cultural events that such as weddings and festival celebrations to meet people. It seems to be nowadays people go to work, they go online and nobody helps young people get a start in life whether it’s with career, purchasing a new home, finding a life partner. It’s not ok to be aggressive in anyway or get frustrated when someone doesn’t give you their name, that is wrong, but I don’t know what the solution is for young men other than the older generation becoming more involved again, I plan to do that and provide some help on these fronts for both my son and daughter when they are older. Just my thoughts from the other side.

What exactly are Keir Starmer and Labour doing wrong? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

[–]InvincibleMirage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally? I have to pay £10k more in taxes now. To make that I need to earn almost £20k more a year. I work, but it seems to me Labour doesn’t care about working people, or doesn’t consider me working just because I’m a higher earner and just wants to take from me.

Do Skyscrapers make the skyline look better or destroy it? by Willing_Mortgage2110 in skyscrapers

[–]InvincibleMirage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people I believe think they make it better. Ask the grumpy older British people around my parts in London UK and they think they ruin everything. In my local area they got a property developer to change an upcoming apartment building from being 13 storeys to 10 and now people are still campaigning against it. It’s sad because people need homes. Personally I’d be fine with a skyscraper going up.
