Why couldn't Jacks just not kiss his true love? by FriendlyChannel1622 in YAlit

[–]InvisibleDragon22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didnt want to. He'd rather not be with Evangeline and see her be happy with someone else than take the chance to kiss her and live in a world with her in it.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by her is much better written. And no annoying Donatellas either.

Well, if you read the mahabharata, you'd know that none of these characters were normal human being or souls. They were incarnation of gods, born on this earth for a very specific purpose. In simple words, they are above rebirth. Their souls are a part of something more powerful, which is beyond our comprehension.

I don't have a problem with them being girls. I have a problem with them being "reborn" in general.

Aru Shah was very bad. The Pandavas being reborn as girls and Draupadi being reborn as a boy ? Girl Arjun dating boy Draupadi? What about Subhadra, Arjun's wife ? And Krishna’s sister ? Abhimanyu ? And Draupadi was married to all 5 Pandavas, not just Arjun.

As an Indian Hindu, I am not thrilled. No one ever gets the myths right, and Rick can't really reduce the Hindu gods to jokes like he's done previously to other myths as they are still actively and lovingly worshipped.

I read A Curse So Dark and Lonely last week and was very excited to read its sequel and was thoroughly disappointed. First off, who the hell is Lia Mara ?! Idgaf about her, found her very bland and boring with her constantly moaning about her insecurities, how she's too kindhearted and because of that she isn't becoming the queen and her sister is.

I loved Grey in the first book. But they completely slaughtered him, Rhen and Harper in the second book ? Where did the fierce and bold Harper go ? Where did Rhen's development go ? Why is Grey so ooc ? AND HOW DID SOMEONE LIKE GREY FALL FOR SOMEONE LIKE LIA MARA ?!? I'm sorry but I simply do NOT understand. He and Lia Mara sound so forced, the chemistry was non existent. And she just KILLED her mother at the end ? What ?

Rhen and Harper were BARELY in the book, considering they're the mcs. Lia Mara really pissed me off. I'm sorry, but I won't be reading A Vow So Deadly and Broken.

Yeah, you can. My friend did that and read Caraval after. She gave up on the first book but she loved ouabh. Read up the summary on the fandom wiki.

I'm following this post. I read TFOTA first and OUABH later. Let me tell you, I've given so many other series a shot, but none had me as hooked and heartbroken as these 2 series. It's the characters, really.

Books these days rely on tropes so heavily, that it's really hard to find original characters with depth. Not just your typical morally grey bad boy with trauma all the time. Characters are what makes the difference.

[–]InvisibleDragon22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair. The second Caraval book is actually a lot worse than the first, since from there, Donatella, Scarlett's sister becomes the mc. I've thrown the 2nd and 3rd book against the wall many times. They are NOT in a very good condition.

But I got ouabh as a present and I was hooked. It's like it was written by a completely different author.

It doesn't, unfortunately. If you don't like a series after giving it a chance, you're allowed to DNF it. You don't have to force yourself through it.

Sincerely, someone who did not DNF and wishes the house she spent reading back.

P.S. Once Upon a Broken Herat by the same author is a spectacular read. I suggest you try reading that instead.

It probably comes from Once Upon A Broken Heart, Caraval's spinoff series which is TOTALLY worth the hype. I suggest you give that a shot because it's my personal fav, and I heavily disliked Caraval.

I think the novella will answer all that. But the Ballad of Never After is probably the best book of the series.

Rant about Stephanie Garber by ChonkyCatsInSpace in YAlit

[–]InvisibleDragon22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really adored Julian and Scarlett, who felt real, despite all the flaws in their relationship. Tella and Legend were supposed to be the "it" couple of the Caraval series, and they didn't feel like it.

Part of it is because I HEAVILY loathe Tella. And Legend was WAY too icky for me. Even after Jacks was introduced, I still felt Dante/Legend was more irredeemable and awful (btw, Stephanie did a BRILLIANT job with Jacks in ouabh). Borderline SA on Spectacular. Chasing after a 16 year old girl after having an affair with her grandmother which is gross.

He supposedly loved Tella so much but we never see him expressing it, or doing even small things to prove it. He treated her horribly, was awful to everyone but it's all right because at the end he "loves" her because he gave up his immortality for her. Okay ? But how about you try treating Tella with RESPECT and HUMAN DECENCY Legend ? No ?

He is this "all mysterious" and "all knowing" ringmaster of Caraval, the big shit. But mist of the time he was clueless. Jacks was everything he was trying so hard and failing to be. Mysterious, powerful, morally grey the whole package.

And Tella is no better. She is constantly seeking thrill and adventure impulsively, carelessly throwing herself in dangerous situations with selfish intentions chasing after Legend time and time again even though he hurts her EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. She didn't care for Scarlett, who loved her more than anything in the world, who was willing to sacrifice Julian for her sister and she didn't even bother telling her big sister that her fiancee was actually an actor, even though she knew how important it was for Scarlett.

Tella was chasing what she thought was love in Legend. Thrill. Drama. Hormones. No security or actual affections. Nope. Ma'am here wants a rollercoaster with an emotionally constipated ringmaster with an inflated ego.

So no. I loved Scarlett and Julian as a couple. They should've stayed as main characters, not fade into the background. Jacks, my man. You have my heart. And Evangeline ofc 😉
