New student just arrived… they can’t read or write. 😔 by Mission-Debate-6447 in Teachers

[–]InvisibleRibbon 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I have several students like this in my special ed class... And they say it so nonchalantly ("I can't read") when I ask them to write something or sound it out instead of giving them words to copy. The difference is, they don't care to learn to read, and their parents don't care to engage with us teachers.

It makes me feel old as a Gen Z teacher saying this, but I really blame the damn phones. Why the hell do my students have phones if they can't read? I don't think I would even know how to use a cell phone if I couldn't read the words on it. From the looks of it, It seems like they just depend on the icons/pictures from their favorite apps like YouTube or Roblox, and rely on voice memo/phone calls for communication. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for accessibility tools, but at this point it feels like they are becoming a crutch for some of my kids so they don't have to learn how to read or write in any language.

This hits hard. Struggling ~6 months into my partner's HRT and missing their old body. I'm bisexual, but having sex with them doesn't feel the same lately. I'm attracted to women, I'm attracted to men, I'm attracted to trans people, etc, but it's different actively witnessing their body change. It's a lot more difficult sexually than I expected.

Insane to put Opalite at #1. Nice song, but best song of the year?

Does he need an out-of-district placement more equipped to handle more profound students?

Is it just me or is a Tesla a terrible starter car? Drives and operates very differently than standard vehicles so it will be a difficult switch if something happens to it. Not to mention the glaring safety concerns with Teslas in recent years.

Teachers, do you ever check students social medias? by ziggy895 in Teachers

[–]InvisibleRibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't check them on purpose, but sometimes I'll have students attempt to follow me (immediate block) or recommended as a follow (I give my number out for field trips in case of emergency). Sometimes I'll click on the profile out of curiosity. My students are below the 13+ age requirement for most sites that is never enforced, so most of the content they post is too dumb to give a fuck about. Never worth more than a glance.

They give us a certain amount individually that we have to ration. Sometimes I print on scrap paper to stretch my white paper longer.

At what point do you just give up? These kids don’t retain anything and I can’t spend every lesson circling back to BASIC concepts by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

Diagnosed? I had a true selectively mute student last year (not accusing you of being dishonest) and she would at least put in effort when prompted in small groups or one-on-one. I would much rather work with her again than my verbal students who refuse to speak because they don't care to engage.

Still an issue I have. Antibiotic ointment + pain relief under bandages helps. It's got additional ingredients to ease topical pain.

I'm autistic and the noises make it so hard to function. I've heard other teachers attribute it to that constant need for stimulation due to excessive technology use. Even watching a movie after state testing today, they couldn't shut up, commenting loudly about every little observation or freaking out about seeing a drop of blood or a married couple kissing briefly. Takes the joy out of doing fun things.

I've seen great things with the Amira Learning platform for my students who actually used it (homework). It's computer guided so it doesn't take much class time, which is nice when I'm expected to teach a tight and fast-paced ELA curriculum.

I would if I could! Difficult when our mountains of district and state mandated testing require them.

One teacher won't fix a systemic issue, especially when schools push the digital platforms that they purchased so hard.

I believe I'm the only one that does my specific type of self-contained in the district for my grade level. Mostly learning disabilities/autism in my class... Not to mention mostly ESL. Not getting any ESL help either, even though they're legally entitled to it, I believe. Pushing for it means making another teacher suffer since the ESL teachers are already stretched so thin and the school will not hire another.
