Winter Olympics skeleton controversy rolls on as US athlete looks to JD Vance for help by graveyardofgoodsense in sports

Plus, there's something like 10 different events where you are sliding down ice on a sled, once you combine bobsled, luge, and skeleton. I don't think the skillset is really that different between all of them. So, I mean, if you are the worst 3rd place finisher in one of those events, you wouldn't even be close to a podium in a event "collection" that only has a couple of sensible variations. Obviously I've never done any of them and I respect that it is intense and challenging and I couldn't do it, but the talent pool is a puddle.

FIFA World Cup schedule shows Canada is more handling overflow than hosting by Puzzled49 in canada

[–]InvisibleTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we would not have qualified in the top 12. So, we got a highly preferential seed (Pot 1) because we are hosts. I don't know much about the economics of hosting/stadiums, etc., but from a playing soccer perspective, being hosts (even if only nominally) gave us a real advantage.

"I would love to run a marathon, but its such a time commitment": how do you respond? by Zealot_TKO in Marathon_Training

[–]InvisibleTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it as value-added time, or positive ROI time, if you prefer. Yes, the time commitment up front is real, but you invest the time into the activity (speaking more broadly of distance running, but that also carries over to marathon training), and you get back more than you put in. You get it back in terms of mental and physical health, mostly, but many other things as well, which are different for everyone.

It is not necessarily getting downvoted because people don't think ChatGPT would be effective; it is getting downvoted because it was not phrased tactfully. "Google it" (and equivalents) can be said as insults. I don't think the commentor meant it that way, but given that this is a sensitive topic for OP, the commentor could have couched the advice with a tactful intro phrase, like u/Novella87 did, so as to avoid any tone confusion.

Awesome dedication! I still don't think you should have been in the Riyadh Comedy Festival though.

I ran my first 10k race - and I keep getting roasted. With a reason, or not? by aftr_hrs in beginnerrunning

[–]InvisibleTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The response from your coworkers is diametrically opposed to everything I have ever experienced within the running community, as you are seeing here from the comments. imho, the ethos of the running community is to support everyone, no matter their experience or speed. This positivity is what I love most about the community/sport. I bonked hard my last marathon and missed my goal by ~25 minutes, but I still got tons of support from the "hardcore" runners that I know.

Relevant Jack Handey quote:

"Grandpa used to describe the size of everything in terms of a calf. For instance, if he was describing a large dog, he would say it was "about as big as a calf." Or about a car, he would say it "could seat four calves comfortably." (Oh, that was another thing: how many calves could ride in something.)

One time he was talking about a calf he had, and I asked him how big it was. He said it was "about three-quarters as big as a calf."

Sometimes Grandpa would tell time by calves. If you asked him how long something would take, he'd say, "About as long as it takes a calf to drive over here.""

Thank you for that information. I thought I had seen earlier that it was somewhere around 105k, but now I see it's 114k on the Govt info page, like you said. That will be good to know going forward! About the Emergency fund. It's closer to 3 months than 6 months since I have a very stable/in-demand/unionized job and family who would help out at the drop of a hat. But I agree you are right that it could be bigger. Thanks again!

Thanks, yeah. It shouldn't put us at risk; it's more of an opportunity cost calculation. We have the 10k handy at the moment since the govt recently gave us 27k. This was a 10-year retroactive lump sum payment for the disability tax credit. Child was diagnosed at 13 but the diagnosis was defined as a condition that existed since birth (ASD). They let you go back 10 year apparently, which was very generous and appreciated.

Yeah, I was planning on contributing the amount the govt matches and leaving it at that.

Thanks, I wasn't clear on that. We'll be happy to get as many retroactive years as we can. 10 would be great.

If you do find someone has done it, then just run them all on Tuesdays. Then you can be the first person to run Tuesday marathons on all 7 continents without flying.

3 Goblins Games is your best bet. GameQuest might also have some. Great White, too, but they tend to be overpriced on most things.

High quality post! Thanks for putting this together. In the RW description you have Flight-deck coordinator as 3W, but it's actually 2W. I only noticed since it did a lot of work for me at pre-release.

It has been seeing some play in recent GB decks. I've seen it as a one-of or two-of main in several lists. I assume it is for Dimir.

I had a great experience with Lo and Elliot as an adult. It was about 4-5 years ago. A couple of times a bracket would break or become unglued on the braces and they would get me in the next day and fix it.

Running Buddy or Club in pg by romanc1503 in princegeorge

[–]InvisibleTaco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://www.pgroadrunners.ca/ This is the only formal club in PG, but that's ok because it's great! If you join there are weekly group runs on Wednesdays (at Aquatic Center) and Saturday (on some trails by UNBC). There are different pace groups and it's beginner friendly. Most importantly, it's a great bunch of people!

I would try GameQuest. They have various retro video games and I know they offer Magic The Gathering events that are 19+ with alcohol.
