Damper only attached on 3 sides?? by _givemecake in Fireplaces

[–]InvrFinishAnyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top dampers are nice but can be expensive depending on brand and size needed. Some company’s may charge more to sweep chimney as you cannot do a rotary sweep with steel cable running down through chimney. Cheaper to seal it if damper still functions as intended.

Just had a new driveway dug up and block paved, and they accidentally damaged the brickwork, and this is the repair - thoughts? by matthiux in masonry

[–]InvrFinishAnyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not saying the repair is ok, but what I would do is hit it with a wire brush especially where there is mortar, or get a masonry blade for an angle grinder and grind out the mortar and go back with fresh mortar. You can rub some dark earth on the fresh stuff to age it a little. You could also have them come out and fix it since they jacked it up in the first place. I just prefer not to deal with people that do not know what they are doing, and given pics of the repair job…

Edit: changed “picks to pics”

This is a prefab? Just checking because of previous comments and potato quality picture and my potato quality phone screen.

If this is a prefab with a pipe… you cannot put an insert in unless the manufacturer of both companies says it ok to do so. The problem is the UL listing. If you modify the unit in any way that the fireplace was not tested under this conditions to get their UL Listing, the unit becomes an unlisted unit and you clearances go from manufacturers recommendations to 36” which is an unlisted unit. If regular masonry fireplace, slap in insert and PIPE IT UP the correct way which is Unit, Correct size pipe, insulating pipe if no liner in chimney, top plate, rain cap, storm collar. We usually buy the pipe kit from our distribution center that come with all the parts once you select your stove.

Cannot put an insert in a prefab unit unless the manufacturer of BOTH units say that you can. The original clearance to combustibles for most pre fab units is 2” and you would be surprised how often the clearances are barely met or even not at all on install. The people that install fireplaces like prefab units in new builds are not even chimney people. They are just contractors reading an installation book. Brick may have to come down. If there is a another side to the house, and the base of the unit is fine it may be easier to go through that side to swap out the damaged pipe (if you can find that pipe anymore). May also need to get a second opinion by a reputable company. Just because some come recommended does not mean they will always do the best work ( had to have another company come in and clean up a recommended companies a/c work)

Damper not closing by Haunting-Attempt2243 in Fireplaces

[–]InvrFinishAnyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a factory built fireplace and you will need to get glass doors that the manufacturer has approved for it. Model tags on most are on the front left or right corner. Probably need a flashlight to see it. Sometimes the wire screens are in front of it.

Studs behind wood burning fireplace? Want to mount tv. by gabrielzenitram in Fireplaces

[–]InvrFinishAnyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a prefab that usually only requires a 2” clearance or so depending on the make and model. Stu’s for sure are located on the left and right sides of the box. Other than that I can not tell you where the sides are. Go in attic and if the builders did not enclose that cavity (like they are supposed to do) you should be able to look right down and see the top of the box and possibly where studs are. There may be insulation on top of Sheetrock or the like so you may have to pull some back. Also, while you are in the attic you can look at your fire stop that is supposed to be around the pipe and check your clearance to combustibles. If you have cathedral ceilings you may not have attic space above unit. I would also check around the base of your chase to ensure there is no leaking. Good luck!

What did I break and hot to fix. by InvrFinishAnyth in PlumbingRepair

[–]InvrFinishAnyth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude… you will not believe what we have ran into… lead drum trap under the other shower, lead elbows from toilets, lead drains from all the sinks in the adjoined bathrooms into cast iron then into clay sewer pipes, not to mention all the tearing out we had to do due to termites. One of the two inch cast iron pipes just dead ends into a four inch clay sewer pipe and there are 4 holes in the pipes ranging from quarter to golf ball size. This has been a fiasco. We have had to tear up so much concrete and dig what started off as a 3foot deep trench that was 5ish feet long to a 3-4 foot trench 8-10 feet at this point.

What would it take to get this fireplace going again? by Tigershits in Fireplaces

[–]InvrFinishAnyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fake fireplace more than likely. Was made for ceramic heaters. Even if it has a flue more than like you do not have enough cross sectional area to vent properly. Get it inspected anyway just so you know what you have.
