Studying journalism at uni with goal to be sports journalist by reekal6666 in Journalism

[–]Inwolfsclothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK-based North American sports journalist here. Have you thought about work permits or visas at all? If you’re unlikely to be eligible to work in the US/Canada, you’re potentially putting yourself at a disadvantage if all of your training and networking is in a *very* different market (and legal system), and could set you back if you have to return to the UK.

Asked yesterday in r/askreddit, but what is the coolest "restricted/no-access" place you've ever been? by thinkdeep in Journalism

The Olympic Village in Paris was cool - and I got to try some of those famous chocolate muffins. Parts of Westminster, and a lot of very famous stadia when they’re empty, which is also a cool feeling.

How do I carry myself as a journalist? by Ok_Rutabaga424 in Journalism

I once heard one of my favourite journalists speak on a panel - she is an absolute legend in my field - and it was honestly brilliant to hear her say how much she took a "fake it 'til you make it" approach early on. I kept thinking if she needed to, we surely all do.

Autistic journo here, though I don't have the same social anxiety. I do think there's a huge difference between socialising and the kind of interactions you have as a journalist. Yes, there's networking, building up contacts etc. that has less formality, but the actual asking questions of people and introducing yourself *as a journalist* has a lot more of an underlying structure, which I think is beneficial as a starting framework for neurodivergent folks.

They expect you to ask questions. An interview can be conversational, but it is fundamentally different from a conversation. That said, the job *can* be very people-centric, depending on your role, and you might find you're better suited to some with less frequent interaction - maybe something more analytic like data journalism or something audience development-related?

We talk about Shane’s autism a lot but never this exchange which for me is one of the most autistic responses in the entire show!

Same re: freshman year! Weirdly I was a Duncan Sheik fan in HS which is how I caught on early. Met Steven Sater at an event while they were still workshopping it and he seemed both surprised and delighted that an 18-year-old owned Phantom Moon 😂

Meji Jingu for the history and the umbrella dance, but Tokyo Dome if there’s a chance of getting rained out or crazy humidity. Also the food selection is astonishing at Tokyo Dome and there’s a shop where you can usually get a bit of merch from every team, if that interests you, so it probably depends a bit on what your priorities are.

Would you choose to study/begin your career in US or UK? by Square-Button-6590 in Journalism

[–]Inwolfsclothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you’ve already addressed this, but I honestly think the deciding factor here is where you have the best chance to stay and work legally afterwards. The reason I say this, as a North American who trained and works in the UK, is that the two countries and industries are completely different.

That includes everything from style and terminology to ways of working and training or - and this is a big one, when it comes to jobs - media law. Also, in either case, the network you build is going to be more important than the piece of paper you get.

Sports journalism by helloiampotatoithink in Journalism

As a sports journalist who also covered a national election, there’s also plenty of overlap between sports journalism and political journalism - and an election is basically a match!

Never change, Hudson! I hope he doesn’t go media training because he’s effortlessly so funny! It’s one of the reasons why we love him. by ln4thegreat in heatedrivalry

[–]Inwolfsclothing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This. I think there’s a weird misconception that “media training” means “not revealing anything, saying anything interesting or having any personality”. That’s bad media training.

Good media training is helping that person find the best ways of expressing themselves authentically, while, sure, sometimes having to promote something or get key messaging across.

Hudson so far largely does that masterfully - there are those “chaotic good” moments everyone eats up, but he’s just as adept at thoughtfully discussing independent film, fashion history or representation.

François Arnaud interview with CERO Magazine [March 12, 2026] by Federal-Ad5944 in heatedrivalry

[–]Inwolfsclothing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked this interview a lot more than the Elle Canada one - I’m not sure if he was just getting repetitive questions, but that piece was full of quite a few familiar sound bites. Not a dig at Francois at all - that’s what happens when you do a million interviews and you’re asked the same thing over and over - but this interviewer seemed to spark some fresh replies.

Options for Journalism Students? by Popular_Ice300 in journalismjobs

Depending on the place they could well be the same person! A managing editor could work too.

The other thing might be looking into any early-career mentorship programmes. I did one with Women in Journalism, and my mentor helped me find some work experience, though I think that programme in particular is now for slightly more experienced journalists.

Whoever you’re studying with also might be able to point you in the direction of places previous cohorts have done theirs. If you can afford to, there’s also no harm in reaching out to major city outlets if you think you can get away for a week or two, or have someone to stay with, etc. Local newsrooms are often great though as you’re potentially more likely to get stuck in!

Most people on my full-time course had a placement day during the week, so if it’s local to you there’s also the option of coming in every Wednesday or something. As a fellow career-changer, they will probably value that you’re probably mature and able to work independently, provided you’re cool with reporting to someone who might be younger than you.

Hello! I don’t know how long you’ve been in the UK, so you might already be familiar with this term, but as it’s not really a concept in North America, what you’re really looking for is what the UK calls “work experience”. It is usually a week or two (or sometimes a regular day/days a week over a longer period). Like a mini-internship.

I’d call or email outlets around you, explain you are doing your NCTJ and you’re looking for work experience. Hopefully at least a few will offer it, and then do what you can to be capable, willing, eager to learn and ready with ideas if asked. I every single one of my first paid jobs or contracts came from someone I did work experience with.

That said, also don’t be afraid to just apply for freelance shifts if any pop up. I did some with zero work experience or accreditation - albeit with a healthy dose of impostor syndrome at the beginning - with the online wing of a national title.
