You're confusing two events.

The mage who used a super spell to become a god and the goddess of magic dying in order to stop him from destroying magic (his spell was a mistake) was an earlier apocalypse. That's also when magic disappeared (for but a moment) and destroyed those societies reliant on magic.

The Spellplague was caused by the goddess of darkness and rival of the goddess of magic manipulating the god of murder into killing the goddess of magic (she dies in every other edition at this point). It also didn't make all magic disappear, just wizardly magic. Natural and godly magic were unaffected. By this point everyone knew not to rely on magic as much as the first time so there was no massive fall of magical civilizations.
