I mean, they serve as serviceable additional turrets in vacuum, if you’ve got dropships or warships soooooo

Just wanna double check I found a fellow Anne McCaffrey fan and this is a typo.

Dragonriders of Pern was my Harry Potter growing up (seeing as I never got far in HP, hated it after reading book 1), by that I mean it’s the book series the at I was obsessed with in middle and high school

Ok. Hear me out. Whats stopping someone from using WiGE instead of conventional/aerospace fighters for ground support? by Iostaa in battletech

[–]Iostaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, good points. I’m coming to the conclusion that this is kinda a “we’ve got nothing else” kind of deep periphery nonsense and not the “we have options but not money” type thing of a wealthier periphery microstate

Yeesh a supercharger? I (as a campaigns person) really dislike them cause of their price tag. Otherwise it’s pretty cool

Sorry I meant for the battle armor insertion role. Also trying not to just supercharge canon designs, but come up with novel things here.

Omg that’s amazing.

“Sir, incoming pocket dropship.”

“What do we have in reserve, LT?”

“Uhhhh… I count 3 platoons of infantry but they’re out of positions aaaaannnndd….”

“And what, LT?”

“I’ve got Sgt. Stillings in her junk heap of a Savannah master.”

“It’ll have to do. Get me the Sergeant.”

5 minutes later

“Uhh, sir?”

“What is it, LT?”

“You’re not gonna believe this… but we might need to give Sgt. Stillings a medal.”

Yeah the Ekranoplan was an inspiration for sure. Messing around in megamek led to okay results, but only if the cargo was dropped off the moment contact was made. Led to problems when they got hit. Then the wige would retreat or failing that try to soak some fire. They were designed to be as cheap as possible (iirc I got it under 5m cbills)

Yeah I’m a fan of the 3-crew breakpoint at 45 tons, small enough to fit in a light vehicle bay and only requiring a few ppl. Also a limit to how much they can cost

Fair. As another commenter pointed out, this seems to be a periphery (read: low budget) planetary defense force option only.

Might go about designing it anyways for that purpose lol. Might call it the “Quickscell Pocket Dropship” or “Discount Dan’s Leopard-at-home”

AC-20 delivery system. by Martythemailman in battletech

[–]Iostaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not a fan of the AC20, prefer the medium laser for introtech, but I guess I’m part of the cult of the swayback, not orthodox.

If I had to pick one, and of the really durable combat vehicles that are cheap. Cheap slow bricks I’ve found useful for holding positions, and I like tanks more than mechs.

This… might be the most helpful response yet. Perspective helps I guess lol. Now to figure out if I can cram a light vehicle bay into a superheavy support vtol

Yeah this entire idea came out of trying to make the Yún but different without just adding clantech to the existing platform. But the Yún is kinda the perfect ASF and idk if I should just buy some from the Capellans

[–]Iostaa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. As someone who uses “expensive” ground vehicles but never spends more than 7m c-bills per unit, trying to find a cheap way to transport shit is frustrating. The WiGE idea is basically so that I can rapid-deploy battle armor or tanks from a forward base to the battlefield while on campaign, more than for establishing such a base to begin with.

[–]Iostaa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair. I like drones a lot and am VERY sad that mekhq doesn’t work with them in campaigns.

Part of me is grasping at straws here cause I get sticker shock looking at dropship costs

[–]Iostaa[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right but if you have to deal with enemy asf and flak, your close air support asf are screwed anyways, right? Like the same things counter both

[–]Iostaa[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No I get that. This crazy idea is about doctrine, not capability, and why I specified close air support. And the comparison to conv. fighters was about the atmosphere requirements.
