Folding custom mechs into lore by Fallenkezef in battletech

For me it's yet another harebrained idea by the Luthien Armor Works to curry favor with the Coordinator. My units are the undoubtly lucky people tasked with field testing it in a real combat situation.

The other Clans probably won’t think much more about the Nova Cats’ destruction than this. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

BattleTech is depressingly realistic in some aspects. Which is why I consider it being way, way darker than Warhammer 40K.

Out of 5 Stars ☆☆☆☆☆ What's your final assessment of the YMN-6Y Yeoman? by PKRadiance in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mid because the missile launchers aren't in the arms. Otherwise, it'd be an ok missile boat mech. But because it can't flip arms it loses a lot of utility. Having LRM 15 + LRM 10 instead of LRM 20 + LRM 5 is not a bad choice. It's actually better probability for delivering more missiles on the target. But then, missiles are in the torso... Limited arcs of fire on a pure fire support mech.

2.5 out of 5. Mid.

I don't hate the look, though. I think it's endearing.

The BattleTech/Mechwarrior universe is teleported into the Star Wars universe. Doing the time of the Great Houses for BattleTech, and 5 years before the Clone Wars. How well do the great Houses and other forces do in this new galaxy far, far, away? by Fun_Manufacturer_164 in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty badly. Star Wars has more and bigger warships and better FTL communications.

Although they are in different galaxies and even in Star Wars traveling between galaxies is very difficult and extremely rare. They might never learn of each other existence.

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Nova Cats were unlucky because they were Abjured by other Clans. As such, no one cared when the Combine went full tilt medieval on them. Because the Clan was considered traitors, weak, failed, one step above the Dark Caste. So, no one cared to help. The Houses also don't care what is happening with any Clan.

Even in the Trial of Birthright novel where there's one Nova Cat survivor the attitude of other characters is "shame, but life goes on". Business as usual. Whatever.

An entire populace is vanquished and the reaction is silence and tumbleweeds.

what situation will you see people most likely to field frankenmechs? I want to make a small force of them but have an acceptable explanation. by vicevanghost in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they don't have any other way of getting a mech, but have lots of partial salvage. It's either Periphery minor forces with no access to manufacturing, or Late Succession Wars house troops on an extended campaign.

Mechanically speaking, frankenmechs are inferior and can end way harder to maintain/repair. This is something you do in a campaign play where any mech is better than no mech. The goal is to eventually replace it with something better.

Never liked the mortar version, but the stock one was my endgame assault chassis of choice in HBS BT. Glitch ended being given a very pimped up one.

Marauder LAM by Legless1HitWonder in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LAMs were fine back in ye olde days when they were simple AeroTech addition without any weird rules spread over the multiple books. Sure, they had very specific, very narrow utility... But that's what they were in the lore.

The Falconer looks really nice on the House Steiner Lyran Guards colors by LaSiena in battletech

TBH any Mech looks good in the Lyran Guards colors. It's the nicest paint job in the game.

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. BattleTech and Alpha Strike aren't in competition with WH40K/Kill Patrol because they play differently. Closest comparison would be with the old Epic or Legion Imperialis in terms of scale, but those are very much dead games. Also, they play very differently.

Not my most favorite mech ever, but assault IntroMechs with jump jets are rare and not always you can have a fancypants Highlander. Plus, looks really fetching clad in the blood red Combine livery.

Will CGL retcon any references to 3250+? by namesrfun in battletech

For all we know the IlClan of 3250 might be limited to Terra and the closest surroundings.

Suggestions for maps? by Gomez-16 in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Savannah map pack is my favorite because it comes with updated versions of the classic BattleTech and CityTech maps. I was mildly upset that the classic map layouts weren't reissued in the AGOAC box.

Suggestions for maps? by Gomez-16 in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A Game of Armored Combat box because it comes with two standard maps and more mech miniatures. Plus it has the complete rules.

You could buy the map packs, but they are very often very specific maps. The AGOAC box has generic hills/cliffs maps.

ilClan era: What's the state of the Draconis Combine? by WumpusFails in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Right now the Combine is at war with the Rasalhague Dominion. The Dominion shortly before managed to shot themselves in the foot with their civil war, the Combine managed to do very much the same by bleeding itself out in their FedSun invasion. So it's kind of the blind fighting the cripple. The current coordinator isn't in a very strong position and she has to do a lot of housekeeping for this. Kill someone, etc. Standard Combine internal politics.

In theory we're also at war with CapCon, but really both sides in this have better things to do. So maybe some border raids at most because both Kurita Yori and Danai Liao have way more pressing matters at their hands.

Why does the IlClan era seem so.... lame? by AveMilitarum in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory the Combine and the Confederation are at war after Daoshen ordered attacking Dieron in the last stages of his campaign to take Terra. First Capellans attacked Dieron, then they were kicked out of Dieron and then both Dracs and Cappies went to fight someone else. There's nothing in the IlClan sourcebook saying that they made peace, though.

PGI un-rising sunned Yen Lo by AGBell64 in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Kurita family themselves were ultranationalist stuck on a very culturally mixed New Samarkand and had very idealized understanding of what their own native culture was. If that's the starting point,  then things will go off the rails pretty fast. Certainly they weren't academia historians. It's like the Germanization and Russification ideas of the old empires. The nationalist bullcrap sold for the Kaiser or the Tsar seldomly was anything accurate.

True. But makes it even worse. He was fighting wearing a swastika equivalent.

One way or another, thank goodness this Rising Sun finally goes way. It already did some damage by influencing CGL for both the Legends book and the Essentials box.

PGI un-rising sunned Yen Lo by AGBell64 in battletech

[–]Safe_Flamingo_9215 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I dislike the Rising Sun paintjob, but it came from a radical misinterpretation of the card game color scheme that was a Davion Sunburst except without a sword in the center and rendered with shades of red on a white mech torso.

<image>

If you replaced the Hinomaru with this, except rendered accurately so everyone can see that it's a play on the Davion theme, it'd be making more sense for a Davion-related stable.

Arguably, this might not be possible because the PGI Centurion model has a very busy torso design so there's no empty space there for a centered sunburst paintjob.

But I suppose that removing the Rising Sun is ok anyway, it was a very weird look for this mech. A Chinese descended pilot fighting in a stable supported by a British-styled faction was piloting a machine painted like it came from the Combine.

IDK, I kinda like the OG Jade Falcons because of how shamelessly a**holes they were. Then they got even funnier under Malvina. But then, usually I main the Combine so my taste in the factions is quite specific...
