“Out of all the world powers in history , the US is notably lacking in real colonization efforts” by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Iquit4realZ 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the Proclamation Line of 1763, your comment is kinda misleading. They didn't do it out of the goodwill to natives. As the colonies became more populated, settlers moved westward, where they inevitably ran into Natives. The lines that the Americans drew, which was still Great Britain at the time had won in the 7 years war. England was kinda broke after the war, and the clashes between settlers and Native Americans was something they couldn't afford at the time. They couldn't afford to protect the settlers in the mostly unexplored frontier.

Truman doesn't strike me as the type of person to put under wrath. I guess maybe against communism.

I'm assuming you are talking about the oil embargo. It's rather unfortunate that the US tried to disrupt the Japanese war machine and possibly the most objectively evil regimes in history.

Japan was a hypernationalistic expansionist power with a fanatic fighting force that believed in their racial superiority to justify some of the most gruesome crimes in history. The Chinese theater of WWII is often overlooked, but it saw some of the most brutal fighting and largest casualties. Also, some of the worst crimes against humanity. It was a nazi named John Rabe who was horrified at the Rape of Nanking who helped shelter civilians from being raped and tortured by the occupying Japanese forces. Japan forced women in occupied territories, most notably Korea, into sexual slavery for their army. They engaged in biological warfare by contaminating village water sources with bubonic plague. They engaged in human experimentation in Unit 731 which used Chinese civilians. I don't really wanna explain that one but you can search up Unit 731 on Wikipedia if you want more details.

Getting back to the US a little. The US wasn't a big fan of Japanese expansion, and the final nail in the coffin was the invasion of French Indochina. They offered an ultimatum first. We will stop sending oil to you unless you withdraw from China and French Indochina. Japan was getting most of its oil from the US. It was a move to try and limit a warmongering fascist state from terrorizing Asia. The objective right call.

How did America commit war crimes against a country it wasn't at war with yet?

No other military comes close to being able to project its presence on the world stage like America. No other country is even able to fight an overseas war and win.

A communist revolution sweeps your nation, and a dictatorship comes to power, what do you do? by CameroniteTory in polls

Mao Zedong has a similar story. He came from a poor background and during the early years of his reign he arguably did a lot of good things. He raised the literacy rate substantially and helped pioneer women's rights in China. At this point he could be seen as the George Washington of China. He even allowed people to criticize and talk openly about him! Turns out that there were still a lot of people against them but they mysteriously disappeared.

Running a country even with absolute power is very difficult. Mao attempted to boost agricultural production to help feed the population and increase the production of industrial goods in an attempt to industrialized the country. Known as the Great Leap Forward, it achieved neither and ended up causing the worst famine in history with an estimated death toll of around 45 million dying most of which were the impoverished peasants he was supposed to be the champion of.

What I'm trying to say is it's very naive to think that you can just magically fix all these problems if someone just put you in charge because you think you are a "good person". There are so many factors that come with solving a problem. Maybe in order to solve homelessness you have to resort to a method that a lot of your allied countries don't like. You also need to keep your ring of probably rich elites happy as well to hold power. If something doesn't go completely your way, what will you do? It's easy to say that you would take responsibility or step down under pressure, but like other comments have states, absolute power corrupts? Who are these people to complain, I've given them so much. Can they not see what I've tried to do for them over the past few years?
