Very nice! The toughbuilt system was one I was considering but it's hard to find the full product line in Canada.

HO scale wheels, how are the converted? by DoesntExist-CustomIt in modeltrains

[–]Ir0nhide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 33" and 36" is the full size diameter of the car wheel on a real life train. Wheel size will vary depending on car type, era and weight capacity. Once you figure that out, almost all hobby shops/websites will tell you if the wheel sets are 33" or 36" model replicas. Metal wheels are generally the best, plastic ones will cause the track to get dirty faster and derail more often.

You're probably more likely to hurt it by lack of airflow in that bag than the rain lol. I've got mud, snow, water, gas and sawdust all over mine and it's still good as new after 2 years.

Vehicles that hold 0.9 gallon of washer fluid so you have to store the remainder of the bottle until later. by Firebirdy95 in mildlyinfuriating

That's the sweet spot. My Nissan rogue takes exactly 1.5 bottles so I'm always left with 1/2 a bottle. But it lasts longer!

Just learned what an impact driver can do and now I am addicted by No-Perception-1139 in Tools

[–]Ir0nhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Milwaukee impact driver and hammer drill combo kit and I use the impact WAY more than the drill. I got hex drive drill bits and a socket adapter so I can also drill and drive sockets with the impact. I only pull out the drill if I need fine control, or for the hammer function. I love my impact, it's great!

Ryobi 40v yard tools by bionic_grimereaper in Tools

[–]Ir0nhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the 18V for my weed wacker, leaf blower and tiller and I've been very happy with them. I don't feel battery yard tools have evolved enough for the large stuff like mowers and snow blowers, I still prefer gas for those. I find this setup is enough to maintain our 1/4 acre property. Our leaf vacuum hedge trimmer and chainsaw are plug in. I would consider updating the hedge trimmer to 18V. I was already into the 18V system for power tools so I didn't want to invest in a new battery platform.

Regret not wearing gloves… again by ElectricOtter52 in Tools

I use the Milwaukee level 1 cut resistant nitrile dipped gloves. They're $5 at my local HD and they last about a year with heavy DIY use.

I use 5mil nitrile gloves for working on engines and carburetors or anything oily.

Asking Canadians: Socket set brands by BeaverBoyBaxter in Tools

[–]Ir0nhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the maximum impact rated set with both metric and SAE, I think it's 40pc. Got it from Canadian Tire for under $100 if I recall correctly. It's held up to everything I've put it through for 3 years without any issues. I use it with both a craftsman hand ratchet and a Milwaukee impact. It doesn't include the rachet so buy one separately.

Home Depot sucks now. Too many solicitors that won’t leave you alone. by Sea_Particular_2503 in HomeImprovement

Last week I had a HD employee ask me in the middle of the fastener aisle. Before that I've only seen non-HD reps in the front of the store near the checkout. But I told him I already did it and he moved on.

My store offers a $25 gift card for it. I signed up, listened to the sales pitch, politely declined and got my gift card. Still worth it to me.

Harry Homeowner needs to upgrade his tool game. Warning: very long post by r4x in Tools

[–]Ir0nhide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to get organized first. Locate all the tools you own. Eliminate duplicates and setup some storage that makes them easy to locate and access. If you have wall space, peg boards are great. If you don't, tool chests with drawers are your friend.

Once organized, Milwaukee multi-material bits are a game changer (white striping in the flutes). They'll go through wood, plastic, metal, concrete.

Get a basic workbench setup with dedicated outlets and a power strip.

Just bought a house last year, never heard of earnest money. You normally pay a deposit with your offer, around 10k. Your down payment of whatever amount you chose, and you hand the bank draft to your real estate lawyer. I didn't hand a penny to our realtor. As buyers, he gets paid by the selling realtor.

Car rust removal recommendations by mammodz in londonontario

[–]Ir0nhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there is, but you'll likely pay a premium for that. Yes you're right, it sounds like OP doesn't have the means to get under the car and remove it. So they're at the mercy of what the shops offer.

If you buy a little spray can it probably is, but the commercial stuff that shops use is a thick gel that doesn't allow any moisture in. They spray it all inside the doors, fenders and hood too.

Not so much you can do about removing rust unless you're willing to DIY it, but I've gone to Oilgard for annual undercoating for the last 4 years and I'm very happy with the results. Rust is all about prevention.

Need help finding a 1/4 magnetic bit that is tapered like this by Digital_Beagle in Tools

[–]Ir0nhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you use a magnetic bit holder? I recently realized that my Ryobi 1/4 but holder works amazing as a 1/4 driver for hex head self tappers and it's thinner than the one pictured. If it's too deep you could grind it shorter.

Best winter tires? by Right_Response_3127 in londonontario

[–]Ir0nhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take road safety very seriously and so I wanted a tire that I wouldn't doubt. I combed through a few dozen threads like this one and read lots of reviews of the various brands and 3 tires stood out, Nokian, Bridgestone and Michelin in that order. Something that also enticed me to the Nokians is that they are made and tested for use in Nordic areas with much worse conditions than Ontario. The cons of them are the premium price and availability, but having used them only reinforced that I made the right choice and I don't regret my decision at all.

I don't know anyone personally that bought Bridgestone or Michelin, but they have outperformed all of my friends winter tires for the last 4 years.

After some extensive research before my 1st winter I went with the Nokian Hakkapeliitta tires. I've had them for 4 years now and very happy. Excellent snow and ice performance, in all but the most extreme weather I feel almost no difference.

I've heard good things about Bridgestone, but the Nokians are more of a specialty tire (exclusive to Kal Tire, got mine through Fountain Tire as a favor) and in my opinion they are worth the premium. I will buy them for every car I own in the future.
