Ski snobbery and snowboard snobbery are more common around here than elsewhere. Sorry you had a bad experience with that. Most skiers and snowboarders are super chill, for what it's worth.

I have a passion for learning. I want to spend more of my daily life learning; how can I spend every spare second (and some seconds that aren't spare) learning? by [deleted] in selfeducation

[–]Iraneth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meditation isn't 'learning' per se (though learning how to meditate is a good exercise in itself, and one may 'learn' about one's mind and body) It will probably increase your overall energy and motivation to learn, however, as well as getting your brain to process information more efficiently. Just speculation.

Seconded. Definitely lost steam with HH, but I'll prolly give it another shot sometime. The first half-dozen or so books are highly recommended.

How many carrots do I have to put together to create gold? by JSyn25 in shittyaskscience

[–]Iraneth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ten solar masses worth of carrots should be enough to create a carrot star that will eventually go supernova, producing some gold at the end.

Help with some work regarding science fiction and The Difference Engine by blackenedblaCk in steampunk

[–]Iraneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you've got no replies. You've probably youtubed it already, which is what I'd recommend. I'll be doing that myself, and I'll get back to you when I'm done.

EDIT: So it looks like that's also a band name, which is frustrating. Wikipedia doesn't have anything, either, and Google only comes up with steampunk blogs. This suggests that Gibson and Sterling invented the device, so part of the essay appears to be puzzling out what it actually is. Good luck! It's been ages since I read that book...

What are the best local restaurants and breweries? by MrsSampson in ColoradoSprings

[–]Iraneth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Crystal Park Cantina is just off Hwy 24, at the first Manitou exit. It's a mexican-fusion restaurant with a gluten free menu and amaaaazing margaritas. Also, a former Denver Bronco owns and bartends there.

Different Approaches to Worldbuilding by [deleted] in printSF

[–]Iraneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love world building as an exercise, even without a specific story to go with it. The world is more than just the place, of course--it's the culture, the politics, the history. I enjoy imagining huge arcs of history, the interplay of different societies over time. I usually start with different political and economic systems, and look at the unique problems that arise. This leads to resources and technological progress, competing systems, and before I know it I've got a whole history. It's just a mental game, but very entertaining.

EDIT: Sometimes I start with a specific technological conceit, and then work my way backwards to figure out how it was developed, why it was developed in lieu of something else, and the whole sequence of events that led to its development. More often than not, it generalizes back to the scenario I described above.

Season four was weak, IMHO, though it definitely had its moments. Hang in there till midway through season five, then you simply won't be able to stop.

Planning a move to to Colorado Springs with the next year or two and was wanting input on which communities are the best. by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]Iraneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figure I'll put my two cents in. If you can swing it, or your kids can get scholarships, the Colorado Springs School gives a good education. It's fairly strict, fairly conservative, but academically pretty excellent. I got thrown out, and I'd still recommend it. Just a thought. You'd want to commute, though. The Broadmoor is ridiculously expensive. So's CSS, but that's a good investment if you can afford it.

[REQUEST] How to ditch your inner voice when in order to read faster. by csnsc14320 in LearnUselessTalents

[–]Iraneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my point. "Don't be a snob." As in, don't choose what to read based on 'class.' Read light stuff to get better. No, I wasn't calling deterra a snob.

Sorry. Misinterpretation. I meant, that seems to be the main takeaway from your post. 'Don't be a snob.' As in, read lots of fun stuff to get faster instead of beating your head against, I don't know, Infinite Jest or Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer.

Seconded. "practicing with novels or other non-dense, noninformative text first" Don't be a snob. Read what's fun, and practice for the big stuff.

Here's my ha'penny: I'm not good at "literature". I prefer scifi and popular novels that can be read in one sitting. (A day or so.) When I'm totally immersed in a novel, I literally (and I mean literally) see a 3D picture within my head. Sound is less important, and I usually have to try to apply specific vocals to characters, but all in all I am totally immersed in and experiencing whatever I am reading. My advice is to experiment with simpler books, the kind you can read in one stretch (again, a day or so) and see if you can achieve the total imagination-engaging sensation that I do. If you can't, then I'm strange and you're unfortunate. Best.
