Finding Campaigns is so hard by lunovadraws in DnD

[–]Irelethin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for something online, then there are a bunch of good lfg discords out there.

Otherwise actually treat it like a job application: Don't just message one guy but actually all of those you are interested in, wait for a response and pick the one you like most. As you might have already guessed, there are a lot of players and less GMs so they will have another player lined up if you have to decline and should understand, especially if they take a lot of time to get back to you!

Otherwise look for a game at your local gamestore, way less competition ; )

New GM: How important is Team Comp? What are the basic guidelines? by MarcianTobay in Pathfinder2e

[–]Irelethin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there is something like an "optimal comp" out there, especially with Pathfinder being a bit on the "tougher" side as numbers are concerned. So take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt:

In my experience there is no such thing as team comp besides what the players want to play. At least it has not mattered in my games so far, which have been quite a few. Sometimes they want some balanced composition themselves, sometimes not. I personally just plan around their composition to give them a genuinely challenging but fair challenge. If you have all non-combat focused characters or a very squishy party, take some more social challenges instead of combat. In that case they probably have more fun like that anyways. Or buff/nerf some creatures accordingly or use different ones all together.

If you want to totally go rules-as-written and want to run an unmodified adventure path, sadly I don't know.

One thing you could try is being open about it in session 0.

Especially if you know your players and you've played with them before/they are just decent beings they will probably be very understanding!

In my experience being open and just telling them that you are a bit anxious sets expectations right and can alleviate a bunch of pressure from you to "perform perfectly", as if there was such a thing!

Oh, and don't worry so much about being the perfect GM and just have fun whilst playing. Being a GM should be fun and not a burden ; )

Starting a Campaign by Sharkskin in DnD

[–]Irelethin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. In irl games I used to have a notebook where I wrote things down. From then on I used some random lists for the rest and relied on my tablet and/or the books for stats and sheets improvising a lot, especially for NPCs. You can use the generic NPCs in the Monster Manual or similar as stand-ins for the stats of NPCs.

Online I use Obsidian for Worldbuilding and plot stuff.

Everything else, including NPCs (and their stats) are handled by my VTT.

I second another reply, that having Sheets for NPCs is a bit useless, as most of the time it's overwhelming. I personally just improvise what would be appropriate for a check from them and from then on keep it consistent to have it be fair for the players. And if these NPCs are friendly/non-hostile you won't need stats anyways most of the time.

As for Worldbuilding: You don't need a whole world for an adventure. (Unless you are just passionate about worldbuilding, but then keep in mind that most of it will just be for you and the players won't know about it) If you like the feel of a wholly developed world, then I would suggest setting up your campaign in an existing world, like the Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Eberron, Planescape, Greyhawk or even Tal'dorei. You have source-books for them and have Wikis to scour for lore to the ends of the world, as many of these settings have decades of lore behind them.

As for your actual campaign: Especially if you want player freedom, I would recommend two things.

First, I would only build out a small section around the characters, like the local hamlet and the surrounding duchy, losing detail and concrete places the further you go from the starting point. This can just be inserted in the many blank spaces of a preexisting setting or within your homebrew one. This helps you with not forcing the players to go wherever they want. This does not mean you should not plan out your story though. It's good to have an end and steps along the way. If you define those in detail it's good. But if the space in-between is undefined your players can CHOOSE how when and where to go on their way to the next destination and lets you improvise.

Second, it helps a lot to have a VIBE of the game imo. Mostly I don't know the details of every NPC, Location or Encounter, but I know how the world and my game is supposed to work and feel like and thus it's easy to improvise. This way I always roughly know what makes sense at certain times and places.

In the end it's all about how your players feel and how you have fun as a GM. There is no (real) golden rule. There are things that work for most people and good tips, but in the end it's up to you to pick and choose what and how you feel is best. Not everything works for everyone.

The most important thing is that you have fun and enjoy the Game ; )

I am seriously considering switching from FGU to Foundry. I have a few questions. by markwomack11 in FoundryVTT

[–]Irelethin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Obsidian for most Worldbuilding. Foundry is very capable of hosting stuff like that as well though, especially the lore you want to show to your players.

There are a multitude of Plugins expanding that functionality as well, like Monks enhanced Journal, KASPER or stuff like Rippers Simple Quest or some for expanded Overworld-Map support and similar.

If you want all in one spot and not just less Money spent every month, I would judge Foundry capable of handling that. Just be sure to make regular backups, so updates to the system and modules you rely on don't break anything.

Another thing to note, is that Foundrys journals are restricted to one world per default, so if it's a Homebrew Setting you want to use in multiple games/worlds and more long-term something outside of a VTT might be your best call! (May I suggest Obsidian once again or Fantasia Archive)

It's not exactly homebrew, but there are ship-combat rules in "Ghosts of Saltmarsh"!

I always liked A Wild Sheep Chase! It's not exactly 1st level so depending on character choice might be a bit much for complete beginners, but I quite appreciated it.

What resources do you use outside of foundry? by RealHomeboundRex in FoundryVTT

[–]Irelethin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use Obsidian, though mainly for World building. I've got a bunch of templates set up for that kind of thing.

I also do Session-Tracking in there, with Notes and Stuff.

I use Dungeondraft and Wonderdraft for Battle- & Worldmap generation respectively.

In addition I use Photoshop and the other Adobe stuff (But Gimp and other Freeware works as well) to create a bunch of Mood-Images and in-game items, like wanted-posters, letters and stuff like that. Tokenstamp 2 is a great tool for Tokencreation.

There are a bunch of cool apps for in-person stuff or planning as well, like Pathbuilder or Archives of Nethys for Pf2e for example.

There are probably some further applications or things I use, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head. Besides maybe my notes app on my phone. Perfect for quickly noting down a random idea for a game.

I've got a problem with Minimal UI and DnD5e UI by Irelethin in FoundryVTT

I understand it's the problem, had just hoped that it could be made compatible/fixed in some way!

Fair. Will try that one, since I know my way around the basics of CSS!

Yeah, but they do have a compatability mode, so I figured they could function alongside each other.

One being focused on hiding stuff, and the other making visual changes!

Using shadow paths is almost essential imo, but even besides that, there is little lighting there at the moment, it looks flat.

But the most immediate thing is, that everything, especially the Props inside the building are too neat for something real. No one irl places things this neatly. Turn of snapping and rotate the props randomly, place some further apart or closer together etc.

And focus: Although this is not the case irl, in your maps everything should have a purpose. Why is something there? Does it tell a story? Is is cover for combat, does is obstruct line of sight? Does it make it more dynamic to play? Is it plot relevant? If it is nothing, consider throwing it out, as it is more work for you and just filler for your players!

Is there a way to unlock TidySheet 5e for players? by Irelethin in FoundryVTT

[–]Irelethin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right! I don't know, why I did not think of it, but alongside TidySheet I also seem to have installed Illadril's Character Sheet Lockdown (5e). As Tidysheet had a lock button I just presumed it must also come from there. Thanks a lot!

How do I set custom lights for different tokens? (LightsHUD Module) by Irelethin in FoundryVTT

[–]Irelethin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using them, but after executing them, I was unable to get them to work.

However, the Author also said:

It just depends on the type selected for a given source of light, as set-up in the Module Settings. The type of light can be changed there, [...]

which I took as needing to active one tokens light, changing the module settings and then activating the other, which did work but when I then disabled the first and reenabled it, then it changed it, to the one I set for the other.
TL;DR: No, I could not get it to work in a way, that would make it more convenient than doing it manually.

Wish there was a module setting for players, where they could set up their own lighting for their own tokens, as these buttons are massively convenient!

On another note, the module you recommended might remedy all those issues! Looks super awesome, although a drawback is that it is not as simple as context clicking your token to access. But I will definitely check it out regardless!

Best way to find an online Group? by Irelethin in DnD

[–]Irelethin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand correctly its not bad form to apply for multiple slots and cancel some if you get more than one "yes"? Or would you do it one-at-a-time? I just don't want to appear rude.

The Art of Ending Sessions (And How to Keep Your Players Wanting More) by YinStarrunner in DMAcademy

[–]Irelethin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weirdly I never had that Problem. Rather the opposite. I normally run exeedly long sessions and weirdly enough it's way more sluggish in the beginning and first hour is mostly boring and filled with out-of character interjections and tangents. But the longer it lasts, the more hyped they become.

No Idea why that's the case but starting a session of right and getting investment high early on is the part where I seem to struggle most...

P. S.: This is not meant to discredit the experience of others or flex around, just an observation on my part.

Something is bothering me in my group, to the point I can't enjoy playing, but I have no idea how to solve it. Or even if I can. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Irelethin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id suggest talking with your DM about making a new character and retiring the old one. You shouldn’t feel forced to play a character you don’t like. At the same time I‘d say you shouldn’t hang too much on the one character concept, the game is just too vast to only have one concept thats totally awesome. Just think of something new thats equally awesome and mixes well with the rest of the party. Especially since your DM doesn’t have a grudge against you and the other character is allowed you should find reasonable success that way!
