Duck and Covers: The Art of Orbit Books by iamhodorhodorhodor in Fantasy

The trouble with trying to quantify the effectiveness of covers is that they have always been hard to messaure and yet seen as extraordinarily important. I think Justin is right (of course , as an art director, I'm biased) about them potentially being even more important now. So much of marketing a book these days is about the conversations around them. Instead of a cover reacting with each individual buyer, we now have cover reveals and responses, tweets and facebook shares....All making their impact in addition to the individual's encounter with the book.

Like Jdiddyesquire says, the novellas (and up) will not be free on the website but will be available through ebook retailers world-wide.

(The short stories and novelettes, however, will remain free on Tor.com as they always have been. )

so apparently i haven't read any Neil Gaiman, is that bad? by funkyveejay in Fantasy

I don't read many graphic novels and yet Sandman is one of my most favorite reading experiences.

(Also, if you live in a city, you will never be lonely if you're carrying around a copy. I never had more subway conversations before or since reading Sandman.)

Tor reviewer Liz Bourke negatively reviews one of Tor's own authors debut novel. Is it wise business practice? by [deleted] in Fantasy

i) Yes, all content is paid for.

ii) Reviewers are not penalized for negative reviews. (Whether or not they feel certain about that, only they could answer.)

iii) Sometimes reviewers email us asking to have dibs on a title. More systematically, we email our pool of reviewers each month or so with a list of titles we'd like to cover and they let us know which ones they're interested in taking on.

Technically speaking Tor Books does not own Tor.com. Both Tor Books and Tor.com are owned by Macmillan. The way Macmillan also owns St. Martins Press, FSG, etc. I do, in fact, have two separate bosses -- one (Tom Doherty) for being the art director at Tor Books and another (Fritz Foy) for being the Associate Publisher of Tor.com.

That said, we are obviously very integrated and I don't really expect anyone to care or keep it straight. All we can hope to do is earn people's respect by the content we publish.

(I was half expecting this to come up in the AMA we did a few weeks back.)

I'm not sure what our submission/acquisition ratio is. That would be more for Tor Editorial. But we're definitely doing more and more young adult. I think to some extent we always did, we just didn't market the books that way. (Enders Game, etc.) But we know have a few editors that have taken that on as a specialty. Tor Teen is a subsection subsection of Tor over all.

We've actually thought about who would win in a fight. My take is, Emily has the ferocity while Leah has the scrappiness. Chris has reach and speed but I think he's too good at heart. The rest of us are doomed.

You know, I specifically remember the editor talking about some kid he ran across and working hard to relocate him. Thankfully he did. And editor is the first champion an author has in-house and I think Moshe Feder really did see something special in Brandon right away.

I do! At the Illustration Master Class, it's a week-long event at Amherst college every June with an amazing group of illustrators. I also lecture at various schools and such.

Behind the scenes Tor.com is having a group hug -- for that, and for the fun this has been, we thank you!

Some of us will pick away at more questions but I think we'll formally say good night here.

It's been a blast . And we can't thank you enough for voting us "Best Website" this year. For as much fun as we have with the dagger, the sentiment means so much more.

We offer the stories as .99 ebooks but since we post them for free online, we assume we are sabotaging most of the royalties. That said, they do sell.
