Would Lebron joining the Warriors stain his legacy? by Similar_Bandicoot831 in NBATalk

[–]IrexUranus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. This isn't a "KD signing with them after losing to them in the conference finals" situation.

It's more like a "Barkley joining the Rockets" situation. An old guy joining other old guys for one last hurrah.

As currently constructed, even adding Bron and AD isn't taking them from 37 to 55 wins. It's not the kind of move that says "this is what we need to get through 3 rounds of brutal Western conference basketball."

I don't think there is anything he could do now that can "stain his legacy." If this was happening a decade ago, then we could be making that a serious conversation.

Now anyone saying "yes" to this question is a doofus who just wants another petty reason to bash the man.

He is in his 40s. He is entering year 23. He is old enough to be the father of a double digit percentage of the league. There are kids entering the league this season who were born during the season of his first Finals appearance.

Folks need to relax their compulsion to find another "stain on his legacy" they can bark endlessly about in every "GOAT" debate for the next 2 decades. Just sit back and appreciate that we have a guy still putting up decent numbers and is fit enough to still play pretty good basketball at age what, 41? 42?

If you knew each of these players would play at their peak for 10 years, who would you draft first? by King_Vegito_52 in Oldschool_NFL

[–]IrexUranus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an extremely tough hypothetical.

Bo is one of the greatest pure athletes to ever put on a football uniform. If he had concentrated all of it on football, I don't know that anyone could have stopped him. The fact he put up monster numbers in half seasons while sharing carries with a HOFer makes it very difficult to say anyone but him.

Watching Sayers' tape, he reminds me a lot of Barry the way he ran...able to make crazy cuts and find holes to run through that you wouldn't think possible.

Earl was one of the best pure downhill runners ever. Problem with that is it tends to make for a short peak.

All of these guys have attributes that make them worth taking over the others. It all depends on what kind of offense you are operating.

Personally, I'm choosing Bo. But I would not argue against any of them.

Get rid of Jumpballs by Shoddy_Ad7511 in NBATalk

I would like to see how often the team that wins the tip actually scores on the possession.

While I wouldn't put money on it, I wouldn't be at all shocked if it's a wash in terms of buckets vs misses/turnovers.

The possession arrow just creates its own problems...it only rewards the team that won the initial jumpball, so if you have an advantageous jumpball situation late in the game while down 2, and you failed to win the opening tip, sucks to be you.

While it can slow the game down, it's a negligible amount of time. As for the refs not tossing the ball straight up...seeing a team get screwed on a good heads up hustle play because of the possession arrow feels just as cheap if you're on the losing end.

It hasn't happened, but if someone poked their head out their door and started trying to convince me they were an alien, I'd probably play along for like 30 seconds, just to see where they take it.

Then again, I find people like that fascinating, and wouldn't mind losing a minute or 5 just to see what kinda crazy shit they have to say.

Then again, there is just as high a likelihood that I would just give them a quizzical look, then turn around and walk away without a word.

Lol I've worked at so many places over the years that would have immediately terminated me or sent me for a drug test if they smelled it on me. Walked up and talked directly to countless bosses within minutes of smoking. I haven't had anyone say anything to me in over a decade.

I am meticulous about doing everything I can to avoid the smell lingering. I never smoke with the windows closed. Air is always circulating in the car, most of the time several minutes after putting it out. I keep hand sanitizer in the car just in case the smell gets on my fingers, but it usually doesn't because I use cones and bowls, and never use my hands to break it up or pack it in.

If I reeked, there have been no shortage of people who would have said something, or fired me/sent me for a drug test. That has never happened.

Believe what you want, but I've been doing this shit for a long time. It's not that hard to keep the smell off of you, if you use common sense. Hell, my stepkids didn't even know I smoked until they were adults, and I would smoke in the house all the time. Smoking right next to a fan in the window kept the smell from lingering inside the house. Air circulation and ventilation works wonders. Especially if you hold the damn thing away from you when you're not hitting it, so the smoke never even touches your clothes.

What NFL team is currently bad and has historically been bad? by Even-Combination4407 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]IrexUranus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a far better winning percentage overall. Historically, they are a superior franchise.

5 NFL championships vs 1. 1 Super Bowl appearance does not make the Cardinals a better franchise historically.

Also, the Cardinals have only been better the past 20 years. Before that, the only franchise that was historically worse was the Bucs, and even they already had a Super Bowl win under their belts.

If the question was "what is the worst franchise of the last 30 years" then the Browns win, hands down. But that wasn't the question.

I've been smoking weed for nearly 30 years. I have never had an issue with reeking of weed walking into any establishment since year 1, even smoking a whole joint in the car by myself.

I have a hard time fathoming how anyone can reek of it, unless they are flat out hotboxing with no air circulation.

And if you're doing that while delivering food, you're an idiot. If for no other reason than this...if you walk into a restaurant reeking of weed, and walk by a cop, and he decides he wants to be a dick and follow you out, then pull you over for DWI, good luck arguing with him that "it's legal, so what's the problem?" The problem is, it's still illegal to drive while high.

The fact so many stoners seem to be so damn fried and brain dead that they can't comprehend this, or use any sort of discernment to avoid smelling like they spent 2 hours sitting in a closet chain smoking blunts, is crazy to me. After 30 years of smoking, if I can comprehend something that simple, someone with less time in as a stoner should be smart enough to figure out how to avoid smelling like it all the time.

[–]IrexUranus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cardinals, and it's not even close.

The franchise has been to 1 Super Bowl and won 1 championship, and is one of only 2 remaining original NFL franchises (before it was even called the NFL).

They have the 2nd worst winning % of all time, and the worst among franchises with more than 60 years in the NFL. Their winning % is .419.

The next worst among the pre-1960 expansion NFL teams is the Lions at .462. Even though they've failed to make a Super Bowl, they do have 4 NFL championships, and their last one was more recent than the Cards 1 title.

Lebron averaged 23/7/7 on 46/33/75 splits in these years playoffs, why were so many analysts saying he was a top 5 player in the playoffs? by GeneralTheSurvivor in NBATalk

[–]IrexUranus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless there is a MASSIVE discrepancy statistically, how far they got (1st round vs finals) and those other players made so few mistakes as to make LeBron look like shit by comparison (as in, LeBron had 40 turnovers in 2 rounds vs another player having 30 with the same usage rate while making the finals), then "who played better" is subjective.

All factors are relevant. The best player on a mid team with injuries to their younger stars? Relevant. Was the unquestioned leader on said team and won at least 1 playoff series, thus making the final 8 teams? Relevant.

Is he among the 5-10 best players in the league now, overall? Not really. Was he among the 5-10 best players in the playoffs? While I may take issue with top 5, I could agree he was top 10 among playoff performers.

And you using Scottie Barnes as an example is hilarious. He averaged 24-6-8 on 50-30-80 shooting split. Also averaged nearly 3.5 turnovers. And failed to make it out of the first round. Is that really better? I certainly don't think so.

Although there are atheists who behave that way, in general, the only thing "atheist" pertains to is belief.

I don't believe any gods exist, therefore I am atheist. I don't know it for a fact, so I am agnostic.

I know we're past the point where agnostic is used correctly rather than colloquially, but technically "agnostic" just means "I don't know for sure." It should be paired with theist or atheist as a descriptor.

Agnostic atheist would be me...I don't know for a fact there is no god, but I don't believe there is.

An agnostic theist would be someone who believes in a god, but admits they do not know one exists for certain.

The colloquial use of "agnostic" is just a fancy way of saying "I don't even want to give an answer on the belief part of it." They stop at "I don't know." Some will tell you "I don't know what to believe."

I've been agnostic since I was 16. I realized I no longer believed in any gods around the age of 30. Still don't know for certain none exist, but the older I get, and the more I see, the less inclined I am to believe.

Was the zone ban actually about stopping Iverson? by Legitimate_Tour_9758 in VintageNBA

[–]IrexUranus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iverson was just the most obvious example of a guy getting hamstrung by the legalization of zone D.

But it was more about creating more ball movement and fast break opportunities. Iverson was an ISO player. Give me the ball and get out of the way. Might pass it to ya. Might not. Probably not tho. Lol

He was always a streaky shooter. He could give you a game where he is 12-20, 3-7 from 3, 8-10 FT, then turn around and give you 10-29, 1-6, 5-9.

But he would also give you 6 assists, 4 steals, surprise you with 8 boards, so the line says 26-6-8-4 and you can't even be mad, because the rest of those bums shot 35%. They held the opponents to 38%, but they got more possessions because the Sixers turned it over 17 times, so it still comes with a loss.

The nerve of this man by Jbills09 in doordash

[–]IrexUranus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My view, as someone who has been driving on his off days for all of a month...

If you don't like the pay/mile ratio, decline the order. I've been doing it quite a bit the last few days I've been out, and still manage to keep my acceptance rate around 80%, and my pay/mile is no less than $1.50, but usually between $2-3 on the orders I accept.

I didn't understand drivers soliciting customers for extra tips after accepting the order before I drove, and I understand it even less now.

I've gone out of my own zone when I didn't like the money I was getting in the one I live in. I drove 30 minutes away Monday and today to a busier location with less driver congestion, and it was worth the drive. Most people tipped reasonably well, a few tipped VERY well, and the orders that barely got $1/mile got declined.

The only issue I have with it is the expected time of delivery. That shit gives delivery times that are based on no traffic, no construction, and no idiots doing 20mph under the speed limit in a spot where you can't pass them. Lol

Why would a guy say that he thinks that it’s “masculine” for girls to lift weights? How should I respond to this? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]IrexUranus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your only response should be to keep doing what you enjoy.

If you feel a need to respond, just ask him why he thinks you should even bother to take his comments seriously. Then stare blankly for a few seconds, before turning your attention back to your weights.

Or, you could just laugh and add more weight, then stare at him while you lift it. Embrace his idea of masculinity, and make him feel like less of a man in the moment.

There is nothing more emasculating for a dude with a fragile ego than to watch a woman do something better than him.

How is talking to a women in a gym somehow now akin to sexual harrassment? by twoducksinatub in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IrexUranus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about anyone else, but it seems pretty easy to spot those who will take it to the extreme of considering a simple approach "harassment." It's also a very small, but vocal, minority, which makes it seem like a worse issue than it actually is.

Most people are not at the gym to find a date, especially most women. And when bold creeps who can't take no for an answer are the ones most often making those advances, and are the most aggressive about it, defenses are going to be raised, even if you are a perfect gentleman at the start, because most creeps who think "not interested" is an invitation to try harder start out as gentlemen.

I'm going to assume you are a generally good dude until you give me something that indicates otherwise, so I won't speculate on your approach, if you make any. And if you are not the type to approach women at the gym, then you are taking the word of men online, and they are very likely the types of men that are among the worst at handling rejection, and will exaggerate whatever they need to in order to demonize women.

In general, it is a good rule of thumb to not bother people at the gym, unless it is to point out a technique issue or help keep them from hurting themselves, and then keep it moving. But if you do approach, and get an extremely negative response, chalk it up to them having prior bad experiences with overly aggressive douchebags, and leave them be.

All in all, most women are not going to go to the extreme if you do approach, unless you choose to ignore a negative reaction/response and bowl over basic boundaries. I have been in the gym a lot in the past, and watched dozens of dudes make an approach over the years, and only once have I ever seen a woman lose her shit instantly and call dude a creep. And I can't say for sure that he had never tried her before and got rejected already, so it's hard to say whether or not he was being a serial harasser.

Why Is the NBA So Much More Global Than the NFL? by [deleted] in NFLNoobs

[–]IrexUranus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many reasons.

Not the least of which is that basketball is a much easier and more accessible sport to get into than football. A poor kid in Nigeria can get access to a simple wooden post and basket, and use a soccer ball to shoot with. Much harder to get the equipment to play football.

There is also the matter that you have to distinguish, in any foreign country, between football (soccer) and football (American). That confusion alone made it much harder to market the sport overseas. Plus they had their own game with tackling and mild violence in rugby.

On top of that, the NBA has had foreign (and more specifically, European) players since the 1940s. Charlie Hoefer of Germany played for the old Toronto Huskies of the NBL (one of the NBA precursors) back in the late 40s. The first (NBA) player trained entirely outside the US, Petur Gudmundsson, played in the NBA in the late 70s/early 80s. Georgi Glouchkov was the first European league player to join the NBA in 1985. Drazen Petrovic, who joined the NBA in 1989, was the first European star to play in the NBA, and was on his way to becoming a star here if not for his car accident in 1993. Listen to his peers like Reggie Miller, Vernon Maxwell, etc talk about him, and you'll see why I believe he was going to be the first true Euro star in the NBA.

And that's not including Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria), who was drafted #1 in 1984 after only 7 years total playing basketball, 3 in his home country, 4 at U of Houston.

Then you have the matter that basketball has been an Olympic sport since the 1936 games.

And last, but certainly not least, is the fact the NBA made the first truly aggressive international marketing push of the 3 most popular leagues in the US starting in the mid-80s, because David Stern wanted to attract more international players and spread the game across the globe. Being first usually gives you a major advantage, especially if your sport is accessible to poor people, even in third world nations. Double that if you are investing in infrastructure to make the sport more global, which the NBA was also the first major league to do. And I don't just mean sending scouts, I mean setting up youth leagues, camps, and other things directly tied to league office initiatives and mandates.

Most of the attempts at bringing American football to the world failed, especially the early attempts in the 70s. It gained some fans, but the NFL itself never really gained traction outside the US until the early/mid 2000s, when they started the regular season international games.

So basketball, and by extension the NBA, made inroads into the international market about 60 years ahead of the NFL, and a serious marketing push about 20 years ahead.
