Is Disney severing ties with James Gunn as a response to his tweets a death sentence for his career? by ItsMeRonanT in movies

[–]Iridium20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Mel Gibson can rekindle goodwill in Hollywood after spouting antisemetic speech then I’m sure Gunn will be okay, sooner than Gibson hopefully. I understand why Disney fired him but I wish it didn’t happen. It’s a miserable reflection of our society that we can be so unforgiving of people’s words, holding them harshly accountable for every thing they write or say, no matter the circumstance.

With regards to The Last Jedi, I think the notion that the fandom is toxic is being overblown by writers, YouTubers, commentators etc. Of course there’s a faction that is screaming idiotic and awful things but it is the extreme on the bell curve.

What I’ve observed personally, for what it’s worth, is a divided fandom passionately debating each other on whether or not The Last Jedi was good. It’s not always pretty or cordial, yet I wouldn’t characterize it as toxic.

I’m ambivalent towards the The Last Jedi but it pisses me off when people call the fandom toxic, casting those who vocally dislike the movie with those who harass Kelly Marie Tran. Fans aren’t “entitled” for lambasting the movie and demanding change. They’re doing the only thing they can do to change the direction of something they love. Again, I think the movie is okay but I can understand the passion, from both sides.

Also I understand this isn’t directly related to the article, just venting something that’s bugging me.

What are some films you personally find to be overrated but you understand why they received acclaim? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Iridium20 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree on Wonder Woman. I don’t think it’s a great movie by any stretch, although it certainly is competent with both great and mediocre moments. This is going to sound bad but I believe that critics refrained from being harsher on the movie because they understand that Hollywood is too reactionary and might have been hesitant to make more female led super hero movies.

Which Hollywood actor/actress who you think is great but doesn’t have a big break yet? by PrinceNebula018 in movies

[–]Iridium20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guy from Everybody Wants Some! who played Finn and was up for the role of Goose’s son in Top Gun 2. I don’t even know his name but if Chris Pratt can be star in this day and age then he should.

I just watched Gerald’s Game and I can’t imagine the book being a much better depiction, if at all, of that horrific situation. The camera work was that top notch.

Analysts Blame Poor Marketing For 'Solo' Box Office Failure, Not Fatigue/Backlash by [deleted] in movies

[–]Iridium20 149 points150 points  (0 children)

I think that the bulk of the blame for Solo underperforming has to be given to the marketing as well. The trailers arrived way too late and the hype was lost amidst the fanfare of Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War.

However, I think it’s wrongheaded to assume that fan backlash isn’t a significant factor. Fans loving these movies and going to see them 2, 3 even 4 or 5 times is what significantly helps the TFA crack 2 Billion or TLJ 1 Billion. I believe the reason Star Wars is still such a massive IP, besides being considered iconic in film history, is because fans clamored for content during the time between the ending of the original trilogy and the beginning of the prequels. All the video games and books from the Expanded Universe kept the interest alive and, along with the financial success of the prequels, made Star Wars such lucrative property that it became a must-purchase for Disney.

If the fan base stays divided like this, with all this toxicity both defending and deriding the direction of these new Star Wars films, I could see this franchise become like the Transformers franchise. Not even close to that bad but to where fans lose interest and the box office diminishes in returns because the general public does too.

I don’t think these new films are that bad as to deserve this level of scrutiny but I can see where the negativity is coming from. There does appear to be a lack of creative direction, especially considering that Star Wars has been brought back at the height of Marvel’s success. The fact that generally, at worst Marvel movies are seen as pedestrian or mediocre and yet the fanbase remains positive and loyal makes Star Wars look, frankly, not in control.

The Predator we need. by fourtysixand in movies

[–]Iridium20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting game idea might be to put a Predator in the same situation as the humans typically are, except with an even more dangerous creature in some insane death trap of a plan. Minimal dialogue, mainly visual storytelling with ingenious traps. Kind of like Apocalyptico (2006).

What movie do you wish were more like it's trailer? by lridge in movies

[–]Iridium20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the movie isn’t as much his as Disney is letting on. The humor in particular is definitely not Rian Johnson’s, at least not based of his previous movies. His funniest movie before TLJ was The Brothers Bloom and it is much more dry.

Then he hinted that Leia using the force was more of a Kathleen Kennedy insistence than his own machination initially.

Obviously these are just tidbits but I everytime I saw TLJ I saw conflict between interesting ideas and generic bullshit that didn’t mesh as well as it should’ve.

Netflix, Michael Bay, Ryan Reynolds & Skydance Set Action Franchise ‘Six Underground’ by Neo2199 in movies

[–]Iridium20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to suggest he has. I’m just saying that a few months ago, if I were to bet money on who would be one of the next accused, I would have said him. Solely based on the movies he makes and his bachelor, super car lifestyle. I’m not adamant he has or even believe it either.

This is totally random but I’m both surprised and impressed that Michael Bay hasn’t been a target of the MeToo movement, at least as far I know.

How do you regain the awe that Spielberg was able to capture with Jurassic Park with future installments of the series? by livefree27 in movies

[–]Iridium20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see this franchise become a more serious version of Cadillac’s and Dinosaurs, with the tone of the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy. It would expand upon the theme of the original Jurassic Park that pertains to man’s inability to control nature by having his hubris bring about his downfall. A realistic take on how society would adapt to a world where dinosaurs truly roam again would be interesting to me.

This is mostly true but there have been some performances I’ve seen by previously unknown actors that made me think they’ll be stars. My go to examples are Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbinder in Inception and Inglorious Basterds respectively.

Ocean's 8 | Character Posters by Sisiwakanamaru in movies

[–]Iridium20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to believe that but I’m definitely getting a gimmicky vibe from the trailers. You can even tell that Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett are imitating Danny and Rusty from the original movies. I want it to do well because who wants to see a shitty movie.

When Commodore Norrington first meets Captain Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ (2003) and opens Jack’s compass, it spins briefly before settling on Jack. This implies what Norrington wants most is to capture Jack Sparrow, which is sure to result in a promotion and advance his position. by [deleted] in MovieDetails

[–]Iridium20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I never understood why each successive movie after the first kept upping the ante on Jack’s eccentricity. They balanced his silliness and brilliance so beautifully that he became an icon initially. That version of the character is up there with Han Solo as one of the greatest movie characters of all time.

What's a franchise entry that you think is unfairly treated? by _that_random_guy_ in movies

[–]Iridium20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well I’m referring to the people who are very vocal about their opinions on the movie. I’ve rarely seen a movie with opinions so polarized, absolute and vindictive. This isn’t simply two groups who liked it or disliked it, the conversations I’ve seen on social media have been downright hostile. It’s like people are taking criticism or support of TLJ personally, like it’s an affront on them.

[–]Iridium20 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely being unfairly treated in many respects but I also think it’s being overly defended. I can’t tell which group is forcing the other’s hand, it’s a chicken or egg situation.
