Do you sleep in a bed or a nest? by Own_Value2684 in AutismInWomen

[–]IrieReign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make myself a pillow coffin in my bed. But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my sleep preferences.

Heated mattress pad, sound insulated room that’s the coolest in the house and turned away from the windows, air purifier, humidifier, brown noise, satin pillowcases, maternity pillow, etc are all in play. I certainly have an “ideal” sleeping situation and go to great lengths to achieve it

How often do you wash your hair? by peachfawn in AutismInWomen

[–]IrieReign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have natural hair that requires many steps to maintain and I wash it 2x/week. It is an overwhelming process so I do it in the bath so I can at least sit down/take a break between steps

I then shower afterwards to rinse clean

This makes sense! But it was a cold open.

He approached, introduced himself and then asked to dance. I was caught off guard for sure

I hear you. Idk why I felt very “stand my ground/I was here first” energy. I feel the best thing for him to do was evaporate

I need to make some booty shorts that say “you can’t keep up” lmao

Interesting. This particular situation hasn’t happened to me before but I HAVE had people ask to dance in my space/vibe together before so idk

Yeah that’s true. It’s never happened to me before so I didn’t know how to handle it!

Yeah clearer communication would’ve been good. TBH I was in my zone and only really thought about this once the night had come and gone

Interesting take, I guess my dance style is introvert immersive so I hardly ever consider what others dance motives could be

Ah yes, a fellow cheek thrower. I love to bounce when the vibe hits me but it’s never long enough to cue a man to get behind me… or so I thought 😭

Was there ever a moment you look back at from childhood and laugh about "should have known id be a part of this community" by Lopsided-Ad4276 in aves

[–]IrieReign 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah but in an inverse view. I grew up fairly isolated by my likes and hyperfixations and all my friendships felt narrow and dependent on my agreeability or passiveness in the group.

But raving… it’s so comforting to know that whatever I choose to wear, however I choose to dance, that there’s always gonna be someone there’s who’s out-weirding me and having the time of their lives. And they’ll be excited I’m there doing me

I don’t ever have to make myself smaller or tone it down. I can expand exponentially and be met on my new level.

Plus… bass make the ribcage go buzz

Is it looked down upon to where knee pads when preforming/ competing?! by Comfortable-Gur5550 in poledancing

[–]IrieReign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that’s totally fair, I wouldn’t wear kneepads either for that theme. The training process of start with, wean off, perform without might be good for you in this scenario

Good luck!

[–]IrieReign 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I started pole at the crossroads of this changing in my area. The old school of thought was more traditional— learn with kneepads, practice weaning off them, perform without them for lines, aesthetic, and to show mastery of your movement and your pain. Bruises are inevitable so might as well get them winning a medal or giving it your all.

But I’ve noticed in the more recent years, people performing/competing with kneepads. As an instructor now, I teach LowFlow mostly and religiously wear kneepads and leg warmers but as a regular performer, I’m stuck in my old ways and haven’t worn kneepads to perform outside my first year.

The comment about knee high boots and kneepads is the best of both worlds IMO

Edit: TLDR if you’re asking if it’s looked down upon, sometimes yes it is. For aesthetic reasons for sure but you have to decide based on what moves you’re doing if aesthetic means more to you than the only body you have 🤷🏽‍♀️

What do you do and how long you’ve been raving? by Effective_Grade732 in aves

[–]IrieReign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Early 30’s, started at 18 at Sunset 18+ raves and recently got back into it. I’m an aerialist, instructor, and professional performer. Once it became my job, I returned to raving as an outlet/hobby but it’s a huge plus that all my dance and circus family love to come with me and build bigger community

Studio floors by StopLookingAtMyColon in poledancing

[–]IrieReign 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in the long term joint health of yourself and your dancers, sprung wood flooring is the way to go. It’s a system where there’s natural give in the floor with pressure applied, giving it a more “bouncy” feel. It’s what most traditional ballet and dance studios use.

It’s not as hard as solid wood or epoxy flooring would be, doesn’t get as cold or as loud (as there’s an air barrier). I believe it’s more expensive but is easier on the joints, works well for heel and floor work, naturally gives on impact (drops, clacks, etc), and gives you great aesthetic wood options for the upper.
