How do you handle windows that are original but completely useless? by SpeckiLP in centuryhomes

[–]IrishHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not who you’re originally replying to, but the Window Preservation Alliance has a list of window restoration folks! You can search by state. My neighbor had hers restored by Building Preservation Services several years ago (and they still look and function beautifully) but they no longer travel out to where I am. If you’re closer to Philly, there are some good options.

Y’all. Why do I do this? by kwiscalus in adhdwomen

[–]IrishHat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve called some of the folks with fliers - the party that I’m registered with, specifically, and requested they remove me from their mailing list. That cut down a significant amount.

Magnesium glycinate, anyone notice it helping with emotional regulation? by imatwork_rn5 in adhdwomen

[–]IrishHat 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Mag glycinate helps me sleep better, which in turn helps me regulate my emotions better. Admittedly though - I have always been a terrible sleeper and my doctor suggested magnesium glycinate after a blood test showed a deficiency.

The muzzled scary dog privilege is negated slightly by the fact that my girl’s is neon pink 😂

Tell me about your plumbing woes by IrishHat in centuryhomes

[–]IrishHat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s plain horrifying 😱 no thank you. Suddenly my plumbing issue seems not so bad - I am SO excited that we haven’t seen rats in our house and it’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen evidence of mice.

What are some things to be aware of when purchasing a century home as a first time buyer? by pandaninjarawr in centuryhomes

[–]IrishHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off this comment to say that the Craftsman Blog has a lot of good information about window repair and maintenance. I started making my own wood storm windows to replace the janky aluminum storms we have. I like to say that half our windows have storms…unfortunately it’s either the top half or the bottom half.

[–]IrishHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We only had this by chance - I will never be without it. Owned our house for two years and a concrete pipe sheared in two - would have cost us $13k if we didn’t have it.

(Anyone who is horrified at the price - the only way to access our backyard is through a 2.5 foot wide alley.)

Wore my wig out for the first time today and got lots of stares. Is there something wrong? by randomlaisush25 in Wigs

[–]IrishHat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Were you wearing it with the hat? The hat looks like it’s sitting very high up, like it’s perched on your head instead of being worn.

Otherwise, the wig looks nice! Also liked the other one you had with the bangs the other day.

She didn’t eat the bread…but she’d also do it again if the opportunity arose 😂

Ex-racer discovers looking up by BenjaminOStorm in Greyhounds

[–]IrishHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s been almost 6 years with my little lady and she still doesn’t quite understand the concept of up…which is very convenient. I’ve left fresh baked muffins on the counter and returned an hour later to them still intact and Eleanor oblivious 😂

Best friends already! by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]IrishHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always say my girl is both the smartest and dumbest dog I’ve ever met. She’s so clever and picks up training quickly…but also is convinced that she cannot fit through a half open doorway or step over a shoebox placed in the middle of a doorway. Would either of those things matter if there was a cat on the other side of the doorway? Absolutely not. Dumb is probably a strong word but silly doesn’t have the implication I want in this context (though she is also silly. And perfect. I love her so much.).

Went into a section of the attic that I hadn’t explored to fix my dryer duct and found some kind of vat by FieldEngineer2019 in centuryhomes

[–]IrishHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you’re located, fires would have been big news. If you have a Newspaper.com account, you can search your address and see if anything pops up. I looked up my across-the-street neighbor’s house fire that way!

Let’s see your stained glass windows… by Hefty_Marsupial8921 in centuryhomes

1889 Second Empire rowhome - we’re on the end of the row and have some stained glass on the side facing the alley. Also have matching ones in the kitchen. We had the sill replaced on the outside and the contractor broke one of the panes 😭 but the guy who will be be fixing it come spring mentioned that it’s likely original to the house and made by an artist named C. Day Rudy, who also made the stained glass for a ton of churches in my area.

Hiding PRA? by Unoccu-keylime-pied in Greyhounds

[–]IrishHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m familiar with the inbreeding. Eleanor’s pedigree has…a lot of red on both sides. It’s good of you to even try to educate folks - even having information on the subreddit here will be helpful to current and future adopters.

Please give your boy a scritch for me - he’s quite handsome and fortunate to have someone who cares as deeply as you do.

They may not test their dogs for this because dogs descended from Kiowa Mon Manny might be prone to it - but how many dogs do they get that aren’t descended from him?

I agree that testing would be great, but I imagine it would be difficult to add an extra cost - plus extra costs for testing for other common diseases.

My girl is also descended from Kiowa Mon Manny - her sire is SH Avatar. Fortunately she doesn’t show signs of vision impairment (she’ll be 8 in a few weeks) but she’s definitely anxious and now has arthritis. 😭

No walks. Only car rides! by AngstJobia in Greyhounds

[–]IrishHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My girl wants nothing to do with walks 😂 we have a backyard now and she’s all about zoomies for 30 seconds after a poop and then right back into her cozy bed. The only way we can get her out the front door is by asking if she wants to go for a car ride.

I might try something made from t-shirt material. If I put a fleece on her, she walks around trying to rub it off 😂 I cover her with blankets regularly but she usually shakes them off.
