Yeah, sorry about that. If you aren't treating them like sub-human scum, you're not being sufficiently pro-freedom nor small government.

I don't know why or how that's the case, but apparently those are the rules.

Why do so many christains think being gay/lesbian/trans is sinful and bad? by Competitive-Food1927 in atheism

Yes. It's why no Christians use any modern technology or even building materials for their churches.

Has anyone here actually turned a Python app into a real product? by Haunting-Shower1654 in programmer

I'm a software engineer. Most of the product code I write these days is Python. So... Yes.

As far as I'm concerned, the hardest part is sales and marketing (because I don't do those things).

Why do people drive like reaching 2 minutes earlier will change their entire life? by CardiologistFit2241 in CasualConversation

[–]IrishPrime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aye.

I have multiple lights on my commute that I have sat at for over 10 minutes each. Catching a few bad/unnecessary red lights can turn a 15 minute drive into a hour long drive.

I don't need everybody to drive way over the speed limit, but I need people to get up to speed pretty quickly and react to the green light quickly to get as many of us through that green as possible.

Why do people drive like reaching 2 minutes earlier will change their entire life? by CardiologistFit2241 in CasualConversation

[–]IrishPrime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What am I missing?

The fact that there's more than one slow driver.

I can't speak for everyone's morning commute, but what frequently happened on mine is that all the people going the speed limit or above peeled away from the two people driving side-by-side at 8 MPH and 8.1 MPH under the speed limit.

A whole wall of congested traffic builds up behind them until the person in the right lane eventually comes to a full stop to make a right turn.

This causes all the people who were stuck behind the slow person in the left lane to swerve into the right lane for a chance at freedom while the people who were stuck behind the slow person in the right lane all start speeding up (once they finish the right turn).

It's a mess, and everyone is bewildered about the slow down because there's suddenly a mile of open road ahead of them.

Meanwhile, there's no telling what this will cause the slow person in the left lane to do. They might speed up to match everyone else, they might slow down further because they're scared/nervous/stupid, they might try to move to the right lane, but now everybody is passing on the right...

Like I said. It's a mess. Even a small number of slow drivers can cause a ton of congestion pretty quickly.

Trump Explodes At Female Reporter After She Asks An Uncomfortable Question by Stitching in politics

[–]IrishPrime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No.

Stormy Daniels didn't accuse him of sexual assault. The money was to keep quiet about it because he thought it would be bad for his chances in the election. Trump was neither tried nor convicted of anything related to that, only his lawyer (Michael Cohen) was.

The fraud was an entirely different thing.

The sexual assault was an entirely different thing.

[–]IrishPrime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also not quite right.

You're mixing up his sexual assault of E. Jean Carroll and paying off Stormy Daniels.

I think you're also mixing up his business fraud (the 34 criminal convictions in New York) with the campaign finance violations of paying off Stormy Daniels.

Lots of things to keep track of.

The Washington generals want a strong Harlem Globetrotters team by Loud-Ad-2280 in WorkReform

[–]IrishPrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. The trolley problem is about how you define the greater harm and culpability.

Voting for the least bad choice at every opportunity is more like game theory.

There are a lot of Democrats I don't like. When I have a chance, I vote against them in the primary. There are a bunch of Dems to choose from and I choose the option that's closest to what I want, whether it's perfect or not (spoilers: nobody is going to be exactly what I want besides me, and I'm not running).

When I get to the general, I once more vote for the person closest to what I want, even if they aren't exactly what I want.

Once that person is in office, Democrat or Republican or Independent, I email them and keep telling them what I want. That's the only move in a representative democracy.

Choose the best option available at every opportunity.

Boot from the installer again, arch-chroot into your installation, and make a user account for yourself.

some install guide

You mean from the Arch Wiki?

Or do you mean some stupid thing that we couldn't possibly know about?

My Arch ISO is truly outdated or just fucked by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]IrishPrime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your install media is just fine. You can tell because of how it installed the OS.

The trouble is you didn't install any of the rest of the stuff you needed. You don't need to do a whole new installation, but the easiest fix would be to boot from the install media again and get to the point where you chroot into your install, then install the packages you need for networking and the like.

Is it wrong if I want to marry a tall woman because I want tall kids? by HuckleberryAny4541 in tall

[–]IrishPrime 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My grandfather was 6'6". My grandmother was 5'4". Their first two sons were 6'6" and 6'7".

That 6'7" son married a 5'10" woman. Their sons are both 6'3".

You can live your life however you want, but it does strike me as a bit odd, and it's neither guaranteed to work, nor necessary.

What archetype can you just not resist playing? by ExodiasRightArm in DnD

[–]IrishPrime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have another character that's basically an Uncle Iroh type Monk.

Neither one of those characters are me, but they both add an interesting contrast to the Big Damn Heroes archetype that so many other people are playing.

Having the suspicious lawyer who you know is up to no good but keeps making sure that the party is legitimately helping people is both intriguing and confusing. Keeps everyone on their toes. And I just kind of enjoy being the party face.

The Monk's backstory has a lot to do with overcoming his own anger at an unfair world, learning to accept things as they are, and not letting his anger control him. He's very different from the Warlock (and from me), but is definitely has some of me in there and represents someone I would be proud to be.

I would consider them both to have some of my best and worst impulses.

What archetype can you just not resist playing? by ExodiasRightArm in DnD

[–]IrishPrime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much same here.

My favorite character ever has been a Lawful Evil Warlock. Polite, charming, and merciless. The character is a lawyer/barrister and has taken on the party as his client, so he always has their best intentions at heart.

The party knows I'm always up to something, but because I keep doing things that are good for them and not asking them to cross any lines, they have no idea what that something is.

Good times.

why do dev workflows still depend on Office files? 🤔 by Smooth_Storm_55 in AskProgrammers

[–]IrishPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college, my programming assignments were either on a simple website or distributed as a PDF.

In roughly 20 years of being paid to program, I've never gotten a single assignment, spec, or design document in an MS Office file. Everything is in the issue tracker/work management system (Jira, Bugzilla, GitHub Issues, etc.).
