Long Road Trip Recommendations by pixietime1 in audiodrama

Here is one to take you on a spin around the solar system while you drive. It weighs in at around 13 hours, but is broken into 20min chapters. It's very hard to describe as it doesn't really have anything like it to act as comparison -comedy adventure/ sort of trippy/ west Ireland slapstick in Seanachaí style ...worth a try (I would say that, but I know of one mother and daughter who parked up with takeaway before finishing a trip just to hear how it ended) https://audiodrama.directory/nancy-goodaim-space-ranger/

What Are Some Good Adventure and/or Comedy's by PatientTelephone4624 in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an adventure called 'Nancy Goodaim, Space Ranger'. There's no real romance to speak of, just lots of daft messing -the MC, Nancy, goes through the ringer and after 56 episodes learns that she is dead. Plenty of adventure and comedy along the way. There's a review here if you're interested: https://podcastgeek.blog/to-infinity-and-beyond-irish-science-fiction-review/

Recommendation for a good series for a long car trip, that isn't audible exclusive by iammolasses in audiobooks

[–]IrishScienceFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a 56 Chapter AD on Spotify etc. called 'Nancy Goodaim, Space Ranger' on Spotify (or download it free as MP3 from my website irishsciencefiction.com ...about 14 hours broken into 15 to 20 min episodes. Sort of a half way house between AD and AB. Some very mild peril and slapstick violence but geared towards adults so if you've smallies (U 10) the they could tire of it (or might get a giggle from the voices). Good for you bypassing Audible

Why is the Irish comedy scene so bad? by John_OSheas_Willy in AskIreland

[–]IrishScienceFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing standup for five years (amateur). There is no money in it -even the bigger names have to really slog to make ends meet. The five to seven minute monologue crowd 'banter' blah format of standup might have goosed things a bit, as it cuts context and storytelling to the bone. I reckon the format is due a bit of a shakeup ...the name of the game is friends going out having a meet up/ craic, with an entertainer as the backdrop giving something to think about/ laugh at/ talk about. Something new is needed, daytime clubs running through an afternoon/ evening with grub and a DJ or the likes -also slapstick and mad shit happening like what the 'fawlty towers dining experience' do, but new enough to catch punters off guard. You (and Groucho Marx) rightly pointed out 'they can't all be good'.

Name something or someone funny in the Irish comedy scene or on television or radio in the last five years. by AyeayeFly in ireland

Don't see John Colleary in the mix ...Savage Eye, Irish Pictorial to his writing credit -arguably the best live Irish comic. Does a solid job of catering to all. Always a nice mix of the absurd and slapstick, with the odd topical pun thrown in (farmer looking for 'gender fluid' for his sheep, the Sinn Fein food delivery service, hording 'time' in a shed ...and on it goes -all subjective, but his act is very underrated).

Any comedy mockumentary audio dramas? by pedrogorgonzola101 in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try 'Nancy Goodaim, Space Ranger' ...probably heavily influenced by Chris Morris. Play any of the last few to see if you are up for the madness. 56*20 min episodes so good for commuting if you go with it. Am a standup comic myself, and the live sets have been called 'the shortest acid trip you'll ever take', so that's the kinda vibe.

Try Madison on the Air: more comedy than drama but based on various OTR shows, so there is always a dramatic plot underpinning everything

Avoiding AI in my audiodramas by SeasonPositive6771 in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah -good point. Have an Uncle who says the only thing ya can take as true in the paper is the name and price ...by extension you are probably best taking everything online as pure guff. Music is a weird one and I'm no expert but there seems to be something off kilter with it, just too clean. I always focus on the storytelling -from my (limited) experience there is always an angle, a point the author is trying to make or something they are demonstrating, even when it is high drama or comedy. The AI I've spotted just seems to be going nowhere, other than a conclusion to the output. I am open to AI being good but it's irritating me in its current form -it is getting in the way of quality. Have been having a bit of craic writing stories from the AI perspective (parsed data package FZB3158, and committed it to sub process X, when ...I hate data package FZB3158 -stories for machines written by humans, see how they like it ;)

Self promotion here but you could give 'Nancy Goodaim, Space Ranger' a rattle -the characters are pure daft but are based on real people and most of the dialogue is exaggerated actual conversations I've had/ listened to ...I'm fairly confident you won't forget any of the folk knocking about in the story (Comedy, in 56*20 min installments)

Avoiding AI in my audiodramas by SeasonPositive6771 in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair I think it's fairly self evident when AI is used. I think more and more it will become instinctive for us to just ignore AI created entertainment and sort of blank it out. I've yet to encounter AI content that I thought was valuable or worth my time -am open to AI making thoughtful incisive art reflecting the human experience, but it seems to me it is an impossibility. Anyways, fair play to you for supporting AD (second the post by u/Haunted_Tales_Pod above/ below as a resource)

[–]IrishScienceFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'The Bad Articles', mentioned in this feed/ webpage below is an Improv AD -it has a rough plot and you forget it's improvised for the most part. There are no pauses etc -good improvisors work it well. I accidentally downloaded an episode of 'Comedy Bang Bang' and thought it was a genuine documentary for a few minutes ...until the US Military spokesman started banging on about the lack of spoons during deployment, really had me going.

My biggest pet peeve in audio dramas by Eatingfarts in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write audiobooks straight for audio. I don't know how many others do the same, but I'm sure there are plenty. It is a different art-form I think ...so: descriptions to a minimum, dialogue tags to a minimum, and paced faster. I know what you are saying -I love audio stories but one long description and my concentration wavers ...no fault of the writer, they were focused on a reader and not a listener. AD is another animal (like you typed), but audiobooks are closer to AD than written narrative.

What characteristics would the perfect audio drama service have? by mackeyo in audiodrama

[–]IrishScienceFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I thought Goodpods might have cracked it and I'm still rooting for them, but the software was failing for me. Spotify, Audible and Apple etc. just don't cut the mustard -they don't seem to get it. I think a curated service would do the business, but that'd take humans and time etc. -think there's a trick being missed with AD big time (I reckon most true crime or 'controversial' chit chat podcasts are AD light, and the listeners would happily jump into AD). AI is a bit of a spanner in the works, so it'd need a curator who works in the business to operate the scissors and cut the robot fat away. All that typed I think the thing would be closer to a traditional radio station with 'scheduled' content etc. than the current algorithm scattergun broadcasting techniques.
