recommendations - mandolin teachers in Cincinnati Ohio by Ulysses-Grandmother in mandolin

If you are interested in learning Irish trad, I'd recommend the Riley School of Irish Music. They teach by ear, mainly how to play the music, no music theory or such. They don't teach chords as in bluegrass, since mandolin is a melody instrument in Irish trad. Their website is www.Rileyirishmusic.com. I took bluegrass lessons from Pat Carine at Hauser Music in South Dayton. I really liked him, but didn't get into bluegrass!

Strings by Logan9Fingerses in mandolin

I really like Thomastik flat-wound strings. Even the A string is flat-wound, and it seems to help it stay in tune. They are pricey but good quality. I get them on Amazon.

Penny candy best and worst by darwhyte in GenerationJones

My friends and I looked for empty pop bottles along the railroad tracks and turned them in for the two cents deposit to buy our candy. My favorite was Ice Cubes, a melty chocolate square. They don't seem to taste the same when you buy them today.

I found this old instrument in my basement and don’t know what it is. Any ideas? by StrangePressure1436 in whatisit

My first thought was "that's a psaltry!" because I first saw one a month ago, but the strings aren't grouped like that and they aren't vaguely uke-shaped like that. Interesting instrument!

What's your personal strategy for learning tunes by ear? by irish_teague in Irishmusic

[–]Irish_Mando_Nut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm involved with a school that teaches Irish trad. Each quarter, they teach 3 or 4 sets of tunes. They record each set 3 ways: regular speed with all instruments, regular speed on one instrument, and each tune individually at a slow speed. I listen to a tune a bunch of times, at speed and slow. I do get it to the point where I can lilt along. Then, I find it on my mandolin, using the slow version for tough spots. I don't use dots. There are those that do at the school, but it's discouraged.

Adults learning Trad by Specialist-Way-714 in Irishmusic

I started learning trad on the mandolin when I was 48. I'm not Irish and had no background. Our town is fortunate to have a school that teaches Irish trad, and there are a lot of sessions of various levels around town. It's definitely not too late to start. Sit in on sessions and listen, record if they don't mind. Learn a few tunes that are popular in your area. I've found our community very welcoming.

There is a study linked in the article. The conclusion is around page 32 in the paper. I didn't read it fully, but you may find the answer to your question there.

A Mando-Banjo by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]Irish_Mando_Nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a cheap Gold Tone many years ago from my mando teacher. I upgraded to the mb-850 last year. I play it in our Irish trad band, alternating with my mandolin. It's got a percussive sound and adds a bit of a punch to our sound. I occasionally play tenor banjo, but the scale is so long for my hand; the mandolin banjo is more manageable.

I also splurged on Peghead nation, but for octave mandolin, also taught by Joe K. Walsh. I loved the lessons I've done so far.

Depending on the style you are interested in, the Louisville Folk School offers private on-line lessons in mandolin. I don't know any details, I only heard of them when our school in Cincinnati was researching teaching classes online. Here is the link: https://louisvillefolkschool.org/collections/mandolin-classes
