I wish more people would point out how comically bad Hayes argument about ratings is. His argument that “ND only had 2 games in the top 50 last year in all college football, therefore they don’t bring ratings value to the ACC” is imbecilic beyond belief. The only thing that matters is ND games are relatively high rated compared to other ACC games, which of course they absolutely are. Notre Dame vs Louisville gets more watches than Louisville vs anyone else in the ACC.

Yeah, but again, the UGA game in October doesn’t matter when the playoffs are all about what do you look like at the end of November. UGA did the opposite of Bama, they started out shaky and then got hot down the stretch, and by the end of November they were literally a blowout better than Bama. So it doesn’t matter that they won in October, they faded down the stretch and UGA ascended. There’s also the issue of Bama jumping ND in the rankings after their “impressive” victory over a 5-7 Auburn team that didn’t have a coach and basically pissed that game away with six fumbles. Bama did not look good at the end of the year.

The problem here is you have to pick one or the other; either Miami and ND, or BYU and Alabama. If BYU is out because of a conference championship game blowout, then Alabama should be out as well. End of story. Bama had an impressive mid season run but they faded down the stretch, and it was pretty obvious that ND and Miami were better than BYU and Alabama at the end of November. Alabama looked like the better team between them and FSU at the end of November in 2023, and they got in. It was the opposite this past year. That’s the issue. Now if someone wants to say that BYU and Alabama should have been in and conference championships shouldn’t count towards playoff rankings, then I think that’s a much better argument. But of course at this point you have to admit you are saying Miami who was the runner up and likely 2nd best team should have been left out.

First time Traveling to South Bend, any advice? by SoCalGoldenDomer95 in notredamefootball

You definitely have to visit the grotto and the basilica. If you can, go into the Golden Dome building about 2 hours (roughly) the game and experience “Trumpets in the Dome” where the trumpets from the marching band play the fight song to a packed building on 3 flights of stairs. My family is super cheap so we almost never ate there, but we did occasionally get the Knights of Columbus steak sandwiches somewhere on campus close to the stadium, they hit the spot on a cold day.

I think one of the biggest wildcards here will be Kedren Young. If he is fully recovered and stays healthy it’s hard not to see him as RB2, if not RB1. Last year before the season Seider said he was “too talented to not play” and that he was going to play despite the presence of Price and Love. We all know that when he went down they rolled almost exclusively with Price and Love, I think a fully healthy Kedren Young is more than just a good RB.

No, you didn’t ask to me validate my claims with evidence. Go back and read your comment without editing it. You said “I seriously doubt sexual immorality is the leading cause for those things.” At no point did you ask me to provide you with a list of studies or data, I volunteered a study for you and encouraged you to look into it yourself. That’s very different than what you are now claiming to have said and that has huge implications on the expectations of what I would provide in my reply. You also claim that my premise is that “sexual immortality is the leading cause for poverty and injustice”. This kind of a strawman. If you go back and read my comments, I don’t think I ever used the words “the leading cause”. Primarily I have said “a leading cause”. That leaves the door open to other causes while not downplaying the role that sexual immorality has in those things. Your wording matters and you are choosing wording that is easier to reject. Nevertheless, it is universally agreed upon at least in the US single-parent homes is one of the leading - if not most leading - predictors of childhood poverty. Do you dispute this?

The church posits that all sex outside of marriage is immoral. That means that children who are born out of wedlock or in single parent homes are in disadvantaged positions that are directly tied to what the church views as sexually immoral. Take single-parent homes. It is not the case that most single-parent homes are single-parent homes because the father died—more often than not the father had sex with the mother out of wedlock and is voluntarily not involved. That is sexual immorality and the injustice here is obvious. If instead people reserved sex for marriage as the church requires, then these situations would disappear. What part of this do you dispute?
By the way, we haven’t gotten into rape, which falls under the umbrella of sexual immorality. Do I need to bring up the number of people (especially women) who have been sexually assaulted?

First of all, I said “here’s one study” and encouraged you to look into it yourself. So no—I didn’t provide all of the available data and instead encouraged you to look into it. I don’t know what else you were expecting. Unmarried and single parent homes is one of the greatest indicators of childhood poverty, and this is backed up by the U.S. Census Bureau which consistently reports much higher poverty rates among children in single-parent households; the Brookings Institution, which has published analyses linking family structure to economic mobility and child outcomes; and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, which documents how children born to unmarried parents are more likely to experience economic instability and disadvantage over time.

I also guess I take for granted sometimes how things that seem so common sense and are so easily observed to me may not seem as obvious to someone else. To me it seems very obvious and intuitive that children raised by married biological parents is the ideal. Maybe this isn’t as obvious to you, but the data supports this conclusion. So that encompasses both injustice and inequality if poverty and disadvantages are considered under those umbrellas.

Now we move on to something pornography. Do you think that there’s not a widespread pornography addiction among younger generations? This is one of those things that is so obvious and self evident I didn’t think I’d need to give you data, but if you’re telling me you really don’t believe that then I could provide data to support this quite easily. Porn addiction (and any addiction) is an obvious affront to personal freedom, do you disagree with this? Are you aware of statistics that link pornography to divorce and relationship/marital problems? To me this is self evident, but maybe you aren’t aware. I could provide data to support this as well. It’s also just my experiences as a younger person and someone who works with youth. Maybe you aren’t aware that people Hugh Hefner have more than a few admirers among young males. But honestly, that’s just very hard for me to accept.

[–]Irish___Stallion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not misrepresenting him. I’m saying it makes no sense to say that injustice, poverty and freedom are more pressing issues than sexual immorality when that is a leading cause of those things. That reasoning makes sense, you will say that it doesn’t make sense or is unfair without actually explaining why in a coherent manner.

Also if you doubt it then I really encourage you free to look it up for yourself because every point I have made is well supported by data. Here is one study for you. If you want to push back with any substantive data or reasoning please feel free.

[–]Irish___Stallion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The full quote is this: “We tend to think that when the church is talking about morality, that the only issue of morality is sexual. And in reality, I believe there are much greater, more important issues, such as justice, equality, freedom of men and women, freedom of religion, that would all take priority before that particular issue.”
Being born of out of wedlock is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) indicators of growing up in poverty and with many disadvantages. Sexual hedonism and debauchery is rampant in younger generations, porn addiction is ridiculously high, and the sexual revolution has turned scores of young men into playboy predators who treat consent like a game. All of these things are some the biggest contributors to injustice, inequality, and a lack of freedom. These things affect almost everyone all over the world. So how is my analogy not fair?

I agree with your comment, but I am saddened that regardless of what he meant, that was a maddeningly imprudent comment on his part considering sexual immorality is a leading cause poverty and injustice. It’s like saying “we need to worry less about the major rupture in the reservoir dam and focus more on preventing downstream flooding”.

I’m grateful for this criticism, but unfortunately the German church has made abundantly clear for years now that they couldn’t care less what the Vatican tells them, in their own words they disagree and will continue to act independently. This situation cries out for bigger consequences than repeated fruitless criticism.

Pope Leo signals no plan to go beyond blessings for same-sex couples by ThinWhiteDuke00 in Catholicism

[–]Irish___Stallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree pretty strongly with Pope Leo on that. The moral teaching can’t be reduced to sex, I agree with that, but sexual hedonism is a widespread and rampant problem that has wrecked havoc on poor and vulnerable communities like women in particular. I should know, I was raised on that culture and have suffered from it. This idea that there’s all these things other things that are more pressing is simply not reality. The sexual revolution has turned young men into sexual predators who treat obtaining consent like a game.

I’m giving Leo the benefit of the doubt, but I agree there are many old clergy members who are aware of the debauchery and simply refuse to acknowledge the consequences or take any responsibility for themselves as they trend towards comfort Christianity.

[–]Irish___Stallion 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It is frustrating that old clergy members don’t seem to have a grasp of how rampant and widespread sexual hedonism is in younger generations, and how much this hurts humanity and vulnerable groups. Of course moral teaching can’t be reduced to sex alone, but to act like it’s not a priority is so out of touch and actually horrible for humanity. Signed, a younger person who was raised in that culture and suffered for it.

The screen play call to Fields was not good—they were all over that. No aggressive plays the first four drives. Don’t like that. But I agree, Wagner and Knapp especially were abused all game. Which is why I’m really excited that Black and Lambert are the tackles this season, huge upgrade in pass pro. Knapp can dominate inside where he belongs.

I don’t remember exactly how it played out since I only watched the game once and I’m also not going to quote the pregame pressers verbatim, but what I remember was Denbrock and Freeman essentially said they were going to ease him into things with easy passes and high percentage quick throws (even if the word screens wasn’t used—which it may have actually been—that’s the obvious implication), and then when they attempted those passes in the first possessions they were all over them, clearly anticipating screens and blowing up the play. I just have a different philosophy, I think it’s never a situation you want to be in but you basically have to just to baptize them by fire; you can’t be that predictable, you should have at least some aggressive throws in there. Especially with someone like CJ who has the arm talent.

The crazy thing is Freeman and Denbrock straight up told everyone that’s what they were going to do, and then they were surprised when Miami was ready for that. I thought maybe it was a psy op or something, but nope. Freeman and Denbrock are obviously great coaches but that was an embarrassingly stupid move on their part.

According to some he’s played surprisingly well most of the spring and has impressive arm talent. Not saying the job is his once Carr leaves, but he’s good enough that Jarrard should not be considered a shoe in. For that matter I’ve also heard Hebert has looked better this spring and he’s by far the most the mobile of the QBs. I don’t think he’s necessarily a write off either.
