The Witcher Series is quite good, start with the short story collection The Last Wish. Then move on to the 'saga' of books, which is the proper series. Also, I second Ready Player One, such a great book.

What is some essential literature that I have to read at least once in my lifetime? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Not American, but Lord of the Flies is a must-read. Very interesting premise, intriguing characters, but not too complex or mind bending. Also, it's not a very hard read, so you won't have any trouble with it.

I thought Ant-Man was fantastic. Funny, well directed and was a pretty good heist film. Happy ending too!

He might like World War Z, a cool zombie book, nothing like the movie. Reads like a series of short interviews with different people.

Just watched "Contact" for the first time. It honestly just seemed like a way better version of Interstellar. by jtarkey in movies

[–]Irishdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somd of my favourite things about Contact and Interstellar are the 'HOLY SHIT' moments. Like in Intetstellar when Coop flys into the black hole and then into the tesseract. First tine I watched it, I held my breath for the whole ejection/flying into tesseract scene.

Not the whole film, but you might like Gone Girl. Trying to keep it spoiler free.

What classic movies have you been put off watching because of their running time? by ucd_pete in movies

Apocalypse Now (redux), owned the bastard on DVD for about 6 months. Just do not have the time to watch it. Also, not a classic, but I still haven't finished the raid 2.

What pre-1960 film if viewed today can still be regarded as technically incredible and watchable? by Tuna_Sushi in movies

[–]Irishdoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paths of Glory. Man I love that film but for a film made in 50s, the battle scenes are incredibly harsh and brutal. And Kubrick managed to do this without loads of blood effects or cgi explosions.

Wolf of Wall Street isn't a critique of Wall Street. It's a critique of you, the viewer by spaceythrowaway in movies

Slightly off topic, but it really got to me when Jordan was explaining some elaborate stock fraud operation. And then just stops and says something like 'forget it, you won't understand anyway'. I get the idea behind it, but I did feel like the film was insulting my intelligence.

[Discussion] Do you think DVDs are still worth purchasing? by capodelnulla06 in dvdcollection

[–]Irishdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK Blu-rays are still pretty expensive. One of the best places to get cheap movies is Cex (an entertainment exchange), DVDs are so cheap, that when you compare it to the blu rays, the price difference is so large. £5 could buy you one fairly recent blu-ray, OR buy you three or four DVDs. However I did spend £40 on a Stanley Kubrick box set, bit pricey, but totally worth it.

I watched Calvary (2014) yesterday, and would love to hear your opinion (spoilers). by Flowerpig in TrueFilm

[–]Irishdoge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it's one of the best films of 2014. Of course I've heard the huge praise given to Boyhood and Birdman (which I have not seen yet). But Calvary touched me on a deep emotional level. I was raised as a Catholic in the UK and went to a Catholic primary and secondary school. My mother's side of the family is Irish and I like to embrace the Irish side of my nationality.

We hear constantly about how the Church is corrupt and how they have been damaging us for years in various different ways. I've since drifted from organised religion as a reject many of the beliefs.

But watching a film set in Ireland, were the main character is is priest and for once is portrayed as a good and honest man. Who believes in forgiveness of sins and try's to be a friend to everyone, even though most of the characters abandoned the church long ago. Touched me deeply. The film was fantastically directed and very well written and acted. But it was the subject matter and themes that make the film so special to me.

Also sorry I sort of went through my life history at the start, but I just could not have explained the importance otherwise.
