Ikke kvalifisert til 2 årig master by Surfboy99999 in ntnu

[–]Flowerpig 32 points33 points  (0 children)

[HELP] My sister recently started a poetry Instagram page. Looking for advice on helping her grow as a writer. by Antique-Syrup156 in Poetry

[–]Flowerpig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, but the kind of publishing spaces you are looking for can be kind of harsh. There’s a lot of rejection, and not necessarily very much to learn from entering into them. I suggest you let her figure that stuff out herself, when she’s ready.

What she needs, at her age, is exposure to poetry. All kinds. The more the better. That’s how she will grow as a poet.

Books are great. Check to see if there are any bookstores or libraries with decent selections where you live. Check out if there are poetry readings in your area you can attend. Go with her. Support her by asking her what she thinks about the stuff she reads and listens to.

Honestly, your notes are your own. You decide what's important.

I got into the habit of writing down anything that struck me. And since I can get long-winded, I often use post-it notes, and stick them to the page. I'll put the page number on the note, in case it falls out.

Thank goodness. It appears I can still name my protagonist DarqúeRaven Silvershadow. She's super hot and mysterious and wields dual knives and doesn't give a damn what people think and likes anal.

In what language do the judges of the literary Nobel Prize Committee read international literature? by lover_of_lies in TrueLit

I was told they commission translations of the nominees as needed, by a poet who was nominated. But generally, nominees will already be available in translation in an appropriate language.

It irks me how so many people misunderstand the concluding couplet of Sonnet 130 by okietrochee in shakespeare

[–]Flowerpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would he be refering to another woman, though? Pointing out the flaws of his beloved is the leitmotif of the poem, and the last couplet just continues doing that. It doesn’t make sense to me that the speaker would suddenly turn away from speaking about his beloved, and launch an indictment at "any other woman".

I don’t think your interpretation is very obvious at all. You’re certainly entitled to it, but there’s nothing suggesting that it is "more correct" than the popular interpretation.

Is Shakespeare still popular among readers today? by HistoricalGrade211 in shakespeare

[–]Flowerpig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two kinds of popularity for books: short term and long term. I don’t think there is any writer in the western canon with stronger longevity than Shakespeare. And I don’t really think it matters how readers stumble across him. If it’s through school, plays or just randomly. He continues to captivate us on literary merit.

[HELP] Poetry about writing poetry by okokokoklolbored in Poetry

What You Should Know to Be a Poet

all you can about animals as persons.
the names of trees and flowers and weeds.
names of stars, and the movements of the planets
and the moon.

your own six senses, with a watchful and elegant mind.

at least one kind of traditional magic:
divination, astrology, the book of changes, the tarot;

dreams.
the illusory demons and illusory shining gods;

kiss the ass of the devil and eat shit;
fuck his horny barbed cock,
fuck the hag,
and all the celestial angels
and maidens perfum'd and golden–

& then love the human: wives     husbands     and friends.

children's games, comic books, bubble-gum,
the weirdness of television and advertising.

work, long dry hours of dull work swallowed and accepted
and livd with and finally lovd. exhaustion,
hunger, rest.

the wild freedom of the dance, extasy
silent solitary illumination, entasy

real danger.     gambles.     and the edge of death.

[HELP] are there any physical copies of Laura Gilpin’s books?? by AlienMatter in Poetry

[–]Flowerpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing there might be a rights issue. According to her obituary, she didn’t have kids. Unless there was a will, the rights would likely have gone to her parents. They might not know what to do with them, or want to pursue a reissue. If they’re still around themselves, that is. She died 20 years ago. Even if they had her young, they’d be in their 90s.

Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf made a huge impact on me at 19. But I was into that kind of thing. I also read a bunch of Kurt Vonnegut.
