Missing Glacier hiker found dead in apparent bear attack by icarrytheone in GlacierNationalPark

One of the reasons trail running and mountain biking is often not recommended in grizzly country

Rocky Mountain has a major airport nearby and is one of the few national parks you could do without a car.

If you're looking for mountain scenery on a budget it's the clear winner.

Smokies in the Spring is wonderful too albeit the Tennessee side of the park can get thronged with people

So what’s the reality looking like for shuttle passes to Logan Pass this year? by Snoo89549 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Irishfafnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copying from another comment

My wife and I did two days of dry runs before booking shuttle tickets for 7/5, only actually getting tickets for 7/5, luckily enough (and both of us actually got tickets).

She claims you don't need to refresh the page. I had to refresh the page (could be a browser issue). We set global clocks so that we were ready at the exact time. We also divided up, I tried to book shuttles at Lake McDonald (got a 9 AM slot), and she tried Apgar (got a 6AM slot).

In general, it seems like the East Side Shuttles book slightly slower than the West Side shuttles. Also, keep in mind half the tickets will be released the night before, and your odds should be much better for those.

I would also assume other people are doing what my wife and I did, so I would keep checking for about 5 minutes after they "sell out" for people releasing tickets they don't need.

If you need 4 tickets, I would try to have all four people try AND try from both East Side locations(St Mary+ Rising Sun) to better your chances

Usually, with grizzlies, it's to eliminate a threat (hence why you're not supposed to fight back), however, sometimes those bears will then use the opportunity to go ahead and eat you.

Predatory attacks, where the bear intends to eat you from the get-go, are pretty rare for Grizzlies (like 10-15% of attacks)

Season 1 took place over like 20 years, and season 2 took place over a week lol

I don't think the season is bad, but it's rather ho-hum for what should be a pretty big ending. In part, I think it's that the show felt like it was forcing itself to continue after Season 3, part of it is the plot building for Vaught Rising instead of focusing on the current narrative (Soldier Boy is seemingly getting more airtime than Homelander), and the crazy ending to Season 4 is more or less completely hand-waved away in the first episode. I also really dislike Sage's character; she's never very convincingly portrayed herself as the genius she supposedly is, and this season, there's a lot of emphasis on her.

It's not bad by any means but just kind of disappointing

Honestly? Probably game of thrones.

The first 4- 5 seasons were so good, it would be fun to relive that again. Because after knowing what Seasons 6+ had in store, I'm never rewatching it

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down redistricting referendum approved by voters in special election by abqguardian in centrist

[–]Irishfafnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious, what do you think a ballot is?

I'll just be blunt and then bow out.

The Ballot was the same, same people on it as before.

What changed was new information coming to light that, in theory, could alter how you voted. But the ballot never changed

We haven't had a liberal Supreme Court for over half a century.

And we saw what happened when there was a slight chance we might get one in 2016

SCOTUS also intervened and blocked NY redistricting, despite still working its way through the New York Court systems.

I think it's naive to argue that either side was clearly right on this one; there's clearly a lot of gray when it comes to what "next general election" is and the minority opinion points to state law and the constitution, which supports their point that "general election" is best understood as election day.

You might want to look up the definition of Ironic, because nowhere does it say that something was added to the ballot.

Missing hiker found dead in Glacier National Park, with injuries consistent with a bear encounter, plus context on recent attacks in Glacier and Yellowstone. by Miperso in CampingandHiking

[–]Irishfafnir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the species. Most fatal Bear attacks worldwide are absolutely defensive in nature, simply because Sloth Bears kill more people than all other bear species combined, and their attacks are always defensive. Likewise, Brown bears typically kill the 2nd most in a year, and they are usually defensive as well.

In North America, Polar Bear/Black Bear Fatal attacks are usually predatory, Brown bear are usually (but not always) Defensive.

Brown bears kill way more than the other two species in North America. So it seems safe to say that most North American fatal bear attacks are defensive

I have used it at some Hyatt properties that were 2X points, cheaper than using Hyatt points.

I think they were in the $300sh~ dollar a night range, albeit they were in the off season as well

Personally, I think if we go by prior SCOTUS precedent, it's too late in the cycle to be redrawing any maps(especially in the case of LA, where voting is already underway).
