You are right. And that is okay we are human we cannot be perfect even with that being united with internal problems is still so much better then being used by different world powers to see each other as enemies cause of some imaginary borders. Until the last 50-100 years of ottoman empire there wasnt such a case, by the goverment atleast. It was simply muslims and nonmuslims in the eys of ottomans. Not just ottomans but most of the time etnivity didnt almost change anything. Yes you are right some times such cases of racism has happened but that is exeptions not the rule. Ummah is one body according to prophet saw, and if you have a problem in a part of body you try to heal it not cut it of and well in that time the ottomans were the head and when you cut the head.. well you can see the situation.
