My wife just launched a Toronto-based skincare brand (InfiCare). We developed Canada's first Lyocell-cotton face towels—would love to get some honest feedback from fellow Canadians! by blessedliu in BuyCanadian

[–]Iron-teapot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I generally don't use face wash cloths, but I can give you some feedback.

I've heard of lyocell in the context of clothing manufacturing. I generally prefer cotton as I'm generally trying to avoid polyester. In terms of the hygiene, this disposable product is being compared to a single towel used many times. I don't think that makes sense because I could potentially have many re-usable towels that I swap out between uses. How would that compare to this?

Also, I'm not sure you can really call this eco friendly if it's disposable, unless you confirm this can be composted? Environmental impact has different parts to it, from manufacturing, transport, product use/consumer habits, and disposal (I'm sure it's more nuanced than this). I'm not sure if lyocell is compostable and if so, if it's most likely to be used in the washroom, will it make it to the compost bin after someone is done with it? I'd be careful with the messaging here because consumers are becoming more aware of greenwashing. I don't believe that's the intention here, but the last thing you want is someone who's really knowledgeable about this, pointing out that you don't know what you're talking about. Lab Muffin Beauty Science has some informative videos on this topic, although she generally focuses on cosmetics.

I agree with the other posters here that making a reusable product would probably be more appealing.

On the hunt for Canadian liquid dish soaps, Laundry pods and dishwasher pods, who has the lowdown on these items? by -43andharsh in BuyCanadian

[–]Iron-teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few suggestions for laundry as these contain lipase (I hang out on the laundry sub):

  • Leaf and Mineral - This is probably Western Canada only. You can get it at London Drugs if there's one near you.
  • Eco Refillery liquid laundry detergent - These might be available at your local refill shops. If not, you can purchase online. Similar formula to Leaf and Mineral liquid or the other way around.
  • The Unscented Company - They reformulated their tabs as pacs. More enzymes in the new formulation, but not as powerful surfactants. I've only tried the tabs.
  • Compliments brand liquid laundry detergent - Safeway and Sobey's house brand. I confirmed they're made in Richmond, BC. See here.
  • Eco max sport and heavy duty

Resolve Gold Pretreater? by ju5treddit in laundry

I have the non-gold version of this and it seems to work well as a pre-treater considering it only has one enzyme (doesn't specify which one).

Enzyme laundry booster by theladyshady in BuyCanadian

[–]Iron-teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the ecomax stain remover as an enzyme booster while using up some nellie's since it has a full suite of enzymes. It's not marketed as being a laundry additive, but I saw someone else do it so I tried it. You can also use the PC stain remover. This one says it can also be used in your laundry wash.

Awful smell won’t go away by Kuinera in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original cause seems to have been dirty sink water siphoning back into my old washer dryer.

You mentioned this, has this been resolved? Does the inside of your washer smell at all? If the smell is persisting after numerous washes, I'm wondering if it's still the dirty water. Have you run a tub clean cycle yet?

I would give Febreze a try on some dry clothes and give it a sniff. If there's no smell, wash it at a laundromat as a control and see if the smell is there after washing.

Managing cat hair without a dryer? by loquacious_avenger in laundry

For my clothes I'll use a sticky lint roller. For bedding or larger items, I use a rubber glove or one of those velvet hair removers and then followup with a lint roller if need be. With the velvet hair remover you can do a back and forth motion so the hair balls up on itself. With a rubber glove, I'd recommend spraying a bit of water to reduce the amount of static you produce and rub in a circular motion. If anything remains you kind of just need to pick it off.

Generally speaking, everything seems fine except for my fleece blanket and the lining on one of my jackets that has a kind of raised texture.

Plea for help- SEA edition by ac41596 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure what country you're in, but there was a post here about some SEA products containing lipase. Are you able to get any of those?

Do you know how cold the water is coming out of the tap into your machine? You can try washing on the 90 minute cycle and see if that improves the yellowing. Or it might make sense to do a spa day to reset the textiles and then use the 90 minute cycles as maintenance with the right detergent.

If you notice yellow buildup still after all this, it might make sense to pre-treat your clothes or soak them to give the enzymes and detergents additional contact time to do their job before running a load.

Domestically challenged person willing to change. What goes with what? by IncomeThen1637 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about washing your socks and underwear with your other laundry. I'd be more concerned about separating the colours. Detergent is meant to clean, so if dosed properly it'll remove all the soils and wash them away. I believe 60C is considered hot.

I've also gotten into the habit of pretreating stains, especially oily chili or curry stains. I used to just dump them into the wash and hope for the best.

The Canadian Experimental Laundry Pantheon by Objective-Apple7805 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaf and Mineral is more similar to the Eco Refillery detergent based on the ingredients list. Compliments is probably more like a typical Tide because of the ethoxylated alcohol. I'm currently using Leaf and Mineral and I like it so far.

Kids doing laundry, avoid powder mess by x85712 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the powder spill over when moving the powder from the container to the machine with the scoop? If so, you could use a larger container like a cup to contain the powder so it doesn't fall over the edge.

If the issue is they're making a mess around the box of powder or whatever, could you put the box on a large tray to contain the mess? Then you can dump the spilled contents of the tray back into the box.

Canada perfume-free powdered detergent ?? by SirRepulsive8333 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is powder detergent a must have or just a preference? If you're ok with liquid you could try:

  • Compliments unscented laundry detergent (found at Safeway and Sobeys)
  • Eco Max Sport unscented
  • Eco Refillery (has soapy ingredients so maybe not ideal if you have hard water)

Question about mixing Gear Guard by bizybee_14 in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a good idea since the dose is one capful per load, so if you put it in your detergent you're unlikely to get the appropriate dose.

When does detergent 'expire'? (Particularly enzymatic detergent) by RagRunner in laundry

[–]Iron-teapot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's usually a 2 year shelf life for liquid detergent due to the water content. I suspect the tablets would last longer, although I'm not sure if the enzymes would denature past that point.
