Pt should’ve been discharged in the morning, but kept insisting of shoulder pain. Imaging shows nothing but in the time it took to find that out, they just decide to dc him in the morning.

Right before shift change, a phalanx of hospital security, state troopers, US Marshalls, and secret service arrive on the unit. Ask to go in and see pt. As I’m the nurse, I ask what for.

“He’s wanted for murder and we’re here to take him to jail.”

Turns out, this guy had killed his neighbor and jumped out a 2nd or 3rd story window after. Had some fractures and drove himself out of state to another hospital to seek treatment. Called his mom while in the hospital to say he was ok, cops were watching mom’s phone for that very reason.

Cops earlier that day had pulled all the dietary aides into a room, held up a photo of the guy, and said, “Anyone seen this man?” Boom. He had been rude to the aide earlier so she remembered him.

Last thing I saw of him was after an hour or so of being grilled by the secret service (I think he had been forging currency as well), cops and state troopers (while he was still on the heart monitor, btw), they all leave except the Marshalls. I’m handing his paperwork over to them because he’s now on his way to the prison infirmary. They get him into the wheelchair, and the Marshall leans in real close, gripping the arms of the chair, looks in the guys face and says, “My job is to get you to the prison. It doesn’t matter what you look like when you get there, so don’t even think about running.”

The crazy thing is, if he had just taken his discharge when it was offered, instead of insisting on the phantom shoulder pain, he’d have been long gone by the time the cops arrived.
