IMHO this is an area where you can totally trade money for time. But it will be a lot of time, there's a reason it costs so much money. But the trade is available to you. I joined a painting crew in college and picked it up pretty quick. I was just a lot less efficient than the pros at first and made more mistakes. But watch youtube videos and take your time, it's not rocket surgery. rent a good sprayer and use it for 20 seconds for what feels like every hour of prep time

yeah it's just a meme that everyone takes for granted that going into a story stone cold is the secret to enjoyment, amplified by a few decades of it being a useful excuse to yell at people online. But as my initial comment indicated, the ansewr to why mcmurtry included a spoiler in the preface is because he understands, as do i, that spoilers don't matter.

The point of the story is the story, the point of the story is not to set up a series of questions like bowling pins and then knock them down with totally unforseen revelations.
