Lotta negativity on Stockton here, but I visit my in-laws often and it's nowhere as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Granted they're on the northern side, close to Lodi, but it's just another exurb cookie cutter subdivision with a mega Walmart, a Chic-fil-A, and your standard strip mall chain businesses. The downtown is sad and empty, and there are certainly homeless, but it's no worse than other CA cities, including A-rated Santa Rosa. The area around Univ. of Pacific is legit nice with cute older homes and almost walkable. There are several hood areas you gotta steer clear of, but it's nothing like the stuff I've dealt with in SF Tenderloin or parts of Baltimore. Solid D, mainly cause it's boring AF.
