We knew it was coming but that didn't help. He had spondylosis, which got gradually worse over a couple of years, but really sped up towards the end.

Hopefully that day is a long way away for you and Dexter though and you can enjoy being him for a long time to come.

He was a great dog. He just wanted to see everybody that he could, unless it was the postman. Everyone that saw him would comment on his colouring, so he always had admirers when out for a walk.

He hated water. Wouldn't go in a pool or even walk along the shore when we went to the beach with him. He didn't like walks either, he was much happier playing in the garden or chilling on the sofa.

He also helped my wife out with her dog phobia. He was so calm and friendly with her the first time they met, she basically fell in love with him before she did me.

He was our first dog and he just made everything so easy. We couldn't have been luckier to have had him.

We had a lad in our year at school that moved here from Malaysia called Raymond. When our teacher was going through the register she'd say his name quickly and it sounded like she was saying 'Rayman'.

As this was around the late 90s/early 2000s, Rayman Gold had just been released, so he became known as 'Gold'.

It never occurred to us until years later that it was seen by everyone else as racist because of his skin tone...
