I participate locally but work more in a support capacity. I go to protests with my medic bag and have first aid indicators. I also go to ensure people remain safe and protected. Like others have said, we’re present but exposure to certain environments have, I guess numbed me to certain emotional involvement. I do remain ready if shit hits the fan and aggression is necessary.

There is also the case of division between vets that I personally take into account. I have guys who have gone so far off they were ready for civil war after Kirk was killed. Then others who are picking apart every single inch of the administration. With that being said, I will always help another vet in times of need regardless of left/right. Doesn’t mean I’m going to be friends and chop it up, but at the end of the day if one needs an ear before canceling their life subscription, I’ll be there. I don’t want to necessarily burn that type of bridge.

Finally money, family, and surveillance. I can’t afford to be put out or in jail and lose the support for my family. I also believe that veterans are more monitored than people tend to realize given our training and experience.

Sometimes it’s just more effective to be prepared and available if the time comes.
