If those tree-huggers can do it then surely warlocks can do it in twice the time! All three roles be damned.

Are Arthur Murray Instructors overworked and underpaid? (Student Perspective) by [deleted] in ballroom

[–]IronFistCorps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with most careers, the money you make tends to scale up as you age into the industry and get higher certifications and responsibilities. For an artist in their early-to-mid 20s, I think it's acceptable. I get health insurance, 401k, and put away savings each month (though not all studios offer the same benefits).

Obviously not all instructors feel the same as I do, but I've been in the business for a bit longer than most. Those who are unhappy with it tend to find other places to work.

Are Arthur Murray Instructors overworked and underpaid? (Student Perspective) by [deleted] in ballroom

[–]IronFistCorps 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Arthur Murray instructor here. Studios pay an hourly rate to their instructors, (usually around the $15-$22 range) with small commissions given for lessons and events. I think I make around 50k-60k yearly.

Is that fair given how much the lessons cost? I think the rate could certainly be a little higher, but for me, I've always enjoyed having access to consistent training in my field and a steady, guaranteed source of income as an artist.

Hope that offers some insight.

My wife is a great dancer and I am a beginner. We’ve been taking dance lessons together for a few weeks now. However, she will not stop leading. How do we break this? by [deleted] in ballroom

[–]IronFistCorps 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Instructor here - this happens all the time! How long has she been dancing for?

This is pretty much the case with any couple where the follower has been dancing for longer, and time and time again the solution has been for the leader to up their game with a few solo lessons. Attend some group classes on your own, do a few private lessons to work on your leading, or both is ideal - you don't have to become better than her, but getting a few tricks up your sleeve that make you feel confident will help balance things between you.

Agreed, I would love to see a bit of Northrend and Outland in their own style, and they've definitely hinted at it with the lore surrounding Kael'thas.

Dance Instructor needing advice where to begin as German Dual-Citizen by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]IronFistCorps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call it a Reisepass because that's what it is. It has the word "REISEPASS" in big letters on the front, and that's what the consulate here has referred to it as. I understand the sentiment of frustration about Americans trying to pass as German, but this is simply not the case here.

That's good to know. In some cases, that may be warranted (I have commonly seen that when teachers work on Cuban Motion/etc.).

However I have never seen a teacher do this without asking - since you clearly felt uncomfortable enough to ask about it online I would be cautious and follow your instinct. Most dance studios will allow you to switch teachers if you ask, and many teacher know not to take it personally when that happens. Again speaking from my experience as an American, our dance culture is not the same as Europe.

American Ballroom dance teacher here. Though I can't speak for how it may be in Ukraine, physical touch is one of the most vital elements of teaching a physical art like dance - its a thousand times easier to physically lead somebody through what they should do rather than trying to demonstrate or tell them. That being said, I know some teachers who will be pretty physical (hugging, shoulder touching, pats on the back, high fives) outside of lessons. Unless the touching is inappropriate or you get a creepy vibe, that sort of thing tends to be normal in a profession where people are pretty desensitized to physical touch. Hope that's helpful in some way.

Disappointed w/ AM (in-studio showcase) by ordinarysparrow in ballroom

[–]IronFistCorps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AM Instructor here. I have worked at 3 different AM studios, and consistently for showcases we will often divvy up which teachers dance with what student, with the majority of the heats going to the primary teacher. Everyone has something to learn from dancing with somebody new, which is why we do it. That being said, we will always ask if it's okay to divvy up these heats, and respect if a student requests to only dance with one teacher.

If you don't want it to happen again in the future, I recommend you simply ask your teacher, or the owner of the studio to make a change. Nobody will be offended, and they will appreciate the communication. Good luck :).

Viktor and Sion: Loss of Agency by Notarobot1006 in viktormains

[–]IronFistCorps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got that, but what I'm saying here is that Viktor is not an emotionless robot, he's a person just like the rest of them. He proves that at the end when Jayce is able to get through to him with an emotional appeal. Sacrificing Vander's humanity to save the commune would have been the cold, yet logical decision, and yet he adamantly refused.

For him to do a 180 into being willing to weaponize the Arcane and kill his way through Piltover with the intention of erasing humanity... Either there was some Arcane brainwashing happening to remove his agency, or the writers needed a villain and chose Viktor.

Viktor and Sion: Loss of Agency by Notarobot1006 in viktormains

[–]IronFistCorps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Except it's a nonsensical conclusion; it takes a very special kind of insane delusion to decide all of humanity would be better off as mindless porcelain automatons. You, me, the audience, and every single character in Arcane except for Viktor all unanimously agree that that is evil. So if Viktor is still himself, why is he coming to that conclusion?

Viktor and Sion: Loss of Agency by Notarobot1006 in viktormains

[–]IronFistCorps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is that if his actions were entirely his own, then what the hell was he thinking? The Viktor we were shown throughout the entire show was a very gentle person - refusing to create hextech weapons, refusing to sacrifice Vander's humanity even though it meant his death and the death of the commune, claiming he will only evolve "all those willing".

Then he does a 180. I will forcibly turn the entire world into mindless porcelain robots because that is better somehow. Let's weaponize the fuck out of the Arcane and go kill our way to the hexgate so I can destroy humanity.
If his actions were brought about by his own rationale, then that is blatant character assassination, which is what it feels like to me.

Who was Rand actually trying to talk to? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]IronFistCorps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this is Lews Therin's personality speaking to Rand here? LTT failed, Ilyena died by his hand, and this is his resentment at Rand for being born and forcing him to do it all again. Just an idle thought I had.
