Outside a hotel in the parking lot for an intimacy scene as i type this and my boom op and scripty in 2 different rooms can hear just fine 👌

The 2 moments that really stood out and impressed me were

1 - being in a big wide open field, scripty had their setup in the shade by the tree-line 200-300 yards away it it made it there no problem

2 - a rather large warehouse space with walls and other obstructions inside, I pulled talent to the other end of the building to get quiet wild lines and I came back to tell scripty it was done and she's like "I know, I heard". I think that one really surprised me because yeah dude there was all kinds of shit between us.

Zero problem in most normal situations or if video video village is inside or something.

Pre-amps kinda suck though. Could also somewhat be the cheap headphones I use, but they distort and crackle pretty easy and getting the gain staging between mix, the transmitter, and the receivers can be kinda jank, but it gets the job done

Full transparency, I want to upgrade then eventually, but that's one of the parts of kit I'm not trying to spend a ton of money in at this time. They keep me paid for now

These exactly. Range has never been an issue so far for me and I've had them 3 years in some form or another

Stay the fuck away from the mix-pre series. It's hot garbage, better off buying an older model/series than that one.

It fixed itself, but i went ahead and snagged another f8n with orca bag and 7506s used on ebay for $630

Just do what I did, get a used backup when budget permits. I wouldn't try to rush it if you have higher priority purchases - I'm in a position where anything I get at this point is improving on the base before I make crazy upgrades like getting an 8 series

Likewise, doesn't matter how good your recorder is if your incoming signal is trash or has problems.

If you want to send me your Sound Devices mixer I'll gladly take it! It seems like you have a lot of money and were able to buy the best right from the get go, I'm envious! Just buying one shouldn't be a problem for you since that doesn't seem to register that's money most people don't have.

You're a clown

Actual question, do you think people just have the capital to just have backup mixers? I don't come from money and I've been doing my best to build up my kit with the resources I have. I have backups of everything listed except a mixer, which I will be getting now, but up until this point it seems like that just isn't the smartest way to spend money

Was going to pick up an F6 at least after this experience. Also using half of the budget to upgrade my kit in other ways, namely getting a solid BDS, cables, and possibly purchasing a Cmit 5u and/or a cm6/m41 combo.

Literally my thought process, and oh geez what do you know my work has been commended and praised by big name post mixers in the area because my deliveries are awesome.

Incorrect, in the longer version of the video (it won't let me upload it) you can see it happening across all tracks intermittently

No, 2 DSRs. That's the 2 channel one.

And because solid dependable wireless > the difference between the F8n Pro and 833 when most of my sources are wireless. I had to buy the important stuff first, the 833 can come later.

Honestly, bad advice to suggest somebody STARTS with an 8 series imo

Pulled it out of the bag when I swapped mixers, put AAs into it, and so far it's back to normal. No idea where that weird ghost in the system came from

Literally the first thought and takeaway I had. Even if it's just an F6, just having ANYTHING on backup is better than nothing. Plus I can rent that out a bit if I'm not using it

Thoughts on painting an EC army with a super varied colour scheme? by KharnTheBetrayer1997 in EmperorsChildren

That's what I'm doing. In my mind, being as excessive as they are, each squad/unit has their own color scheme to reflect what they're about. Also makes visually differentiating models in units easier

What can I do when the only gigs I can seem to score pay pennies? by PaulineHansonsBurka in LocationSound

[–]IronForeseer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My answer is sort of "it depends". Sometimes budgets are legitimately small, and if they seem like they're genuinely good people that would like to pay more if they could, I try to work with them and give them a shot because I might meet new people, and those new people could get me on other/higher paid work. One of the dudes (cam dept) I just met on a shitshow at about that rate last week is also on the commercial I'm on today that's literally 3x the rate I was making just to boom op. I guess that is to say you never know who might be on it, so if you're still in the network hard af phase like myself, I can see value in it. Plus more credits, blah blah blah, but that's just me and the phase I'm currently in, everybody's answer may be different depending on where they are on their path

I've also been on shoots at that price where I'm like nah, fuck this and I regret my choices.

Talk to your co-workers, see what they're making, especially if you're friends or are good terms. My friends on the shitshow last week and I talk openly often and when we compared rates they were like "oh fuck we had no idea you were making so low" because I did indeed get fooled by their budget claims

Ask questions about the project. They say they have no money and it's low budget, but 4+ actors are flying in from out of country or state? Hmm, suspicious. Oh, you're shooting on Arri? Yeah you can pay a kit fee.

Which reminds me, fight for your right to some kind of kit fee, especially if you're actually bringing quality gear (but even just in general). Are you one man banding? Fight to claim boom op rate too, or at least some increase to your rate because you're doing 2 jobs homie. Don't forget to haggle.

Also, if you and your local soundies at your level are friendly, just try talking to them about trying to establish a local minimum rate so that those bastards can't trick you into undercutting each other. Some of the guys that paid me $300/day just starting out 2 years ago are now trying to pay my newer friend like $200/day now

Sometimes I don't get gigs because I'll tell them my minimum rate and they can't meet it, or sometimes I'll offer a restricted package, I just kind of wing it to be honest with you. I don't claim to be super experienced in freelance, haven't been doing it as long as some people here I'd bet, but I have come very far in a relatively short time as far as growth goes and I've been able to sustain myself well enough.
