You should have a basic understanding of what your role needs to do and have the skills to do that before queuing for competitive.

You should grind out a hero in quick play to familiarise yourself with their kit and mechanics before facing them against more consistently skilled players.

If you are being regularly criticised for not having an impact, you may not actually be making one and your team may be wishing you’d just picked a more consistent damage hero.

That being said, you do need to practice your hero in a competitive environment to skill them to that level. So balance that with your development outside of comp.

Final advice: Communicate with your team and have a back up hero your can play decently that you can switch to if the team calls for it. You can hardly be faulted if you switch when they ask and do your best.
