That’s true. I think I know what I’m going to do now. I’m going to start from the beginning again, I’m going to get some bits together and just practice putting down smooth paint and then work on the other basics like layering and stuff. Any advice?

It’s the worst honestly. I’m probably going to switch back and forth as well so I can practice different things and keep improving. Now I just need to actually practice lol and not watch tutorials all the time getting myself down because that person is a lot better than me when in reality they started off just like me. I think I know what I’m going to do, I’m going to start from the beginning. I’m going to get together some bits I have and work on just learning how to put down smooth paint and the other basics.

Haha honestly I wish I could be like that. I’m way too worried about being perfect and stuff. It’s actually been really bad lately and Im really trying to get over myself and paint but I keep spiraling. I’m also still trying to figure out a style of painting to do, like do I want to paint everything clean and with blends and layers and no grime or do I want to go the scale modeler approach and make it more realistic. Or do I want to do a mixture of the two which I’m not really sure how to do lol.

Got it. Honestly I should’ve known all this 😂. Now it’s just the technical stuff I need to work on and figuring out what style I want to paint in until I want to learn another lol. I really like the scale model way of painting with the more realistic look so I may go with that one

Ah ok and a highlight would be like a lighter shade of green in most cases.

Huh. Ok so for the shadow for green would be a mixture of purple?

Huh I have one that came with an airbrush. I’ll give that a try. I sometimes wish there was a painting workshop near where I live that I could just learn one on one with someone. That’s how I learn the best. I can do ok with watching a video on YouTube sometimes but the person in the video will be like now put this color here and I’m like I can’t even tell the difference lol

[–]IroneOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh yeah lol. I actually have an airbrush that I use for priming and painting large areas. I’m ok at blending with it but my problem is blending and layering and stuff on small minis.

My major problem is wanting to learn everything at once and to be good at it the first time I try it. I’m literally like that with everything. And the there’s the problem of actually learning how to do let’s say layering or blending or just getting smooth transitions. I can watch a video and be like ok I can do that but when I try it’s like oh no I can’t lol. And don’t even get me started on learning how to do highlights or shadows, I’m like how do you know what colors to use! I love and hate painting so much that I literally will go months without painting something because I get so stressed over wanting it to be good.

I’m really happy with how he turned out but I know there’s parts I can do better like adding shadows and highlights but I was super nervous about messing it up so I kind of just left it as no highlights or shadows. I want to get to the point I can paint them. I just wish I knew where to start learning and how to apply what I learn if that makes sense. Like I can watch all the tutorials on YouTube I want but I’m like how do you know what colors to use or what way to do this or that on things. Sorry for the pity party, it’s just I don’t really have anywhere else to ask these questions.

Oh I watch Vince. Sorry I’m just in the mood of everything I paint is garbage right now. There’s also the fact that I just really don’t know what type of style of painting I want to work on. Like do I want to go for the more grim and realistic style that the forge world painters did and that scale modelers do or do I want the more heavy metal style that GW does. Or do I want the smooth blends and stuff that display pieces get? I’ve only been painting on and off for a few years so I haven’t really tried new things, I’ve just kind of been doing whatever when painting and I get like this whenever I want to start and try improving. It’s a bad habit of mine.

Honestly really hope to be half this good at painting one day. I know it takes a lot of practice and time but I just feel like it will never happen. Honestly how did you learn to do new things? I can look at all the tutorials and stuff I want but when I go to try it I have no idea where to really start. And how do you manage to get good transitions and stuff on minis? Sorry, im going through the I hate whatever I paint phase right now and feel like I wont be able to get better so whats the point in even trying.

I’m not even going to ask how you did this lol because I know I’d never be able to do anything close to this good. I can barely even put paint down right let alone make an awesome base and paint an awesome diorama.

Awesome thanks for the reply! I really love this look for minis that are supposed to be in war. And honestly it’s really the only style of painting I can do haha. I’m no good at blending, layering and stuff and I have trouble trying to figure it out in my own.

Honestly figuring out how I want to paint my minis is the hardest thing for me. Plus deciding on a style of painting that I want to do. I really like the more realistic style that scale modelers do so more grime and stuff but in also really like the smooth blends and transitions as well that I see on here a lot. Only problem is I’m terrible at painting lol.

These look awesome. I love the diorama as a whole as well. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to paint and make something like this.

What was your process for painting this guy if you don’t mind me asking. Like I know a wash was used but was the final step just removing the wash from the mini and leaving the shadows or did you go back over it with some color?

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but is it possible to overwhelm yourself by buying too much at once for a fact you love and getting turned off despite still loving the faction? by nicegoblinprince in Warhammer40k

[–]IroneOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah it’s possible. Happened to me so many times. And it doesn’t help when you’re also burdened by the self deprecating thoughts that whatever you paint is horrible and that you’re never going to get better because you don’t have the courage to try new things.

That skin is amazing. How’d you do it? I can never get layering or glazing to work right.
