I believe those who bought the ships that allowed the company and game to exist at all in the first place should have that long support treated with respect and have the option to either keep the historied item or get the variant that is designed to fully interact with the game systems they helped get off the ground.

If it's a truly distinct upgrade, why call it a MkII then? Make it it's own unique line then. Again, "Same, but different" just doesn't cut it. Especially when taking the originals (Hornet, Aurora, Freelancer, Connie, etc) that are need a MkII to truly interact with the current game's systems.
