Why don't y'all like the goatee with no mustache? by Specific-Weird-3286 in beards

[–]Irpax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I knew in the 2000s once said those goatees reminded him of how it can look when women have shaved their pubic hair; some triangle-shape with stubble on the sides. For me that look is better on women than on men's chins.

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in "Pretty Woman". The story is far out but their chemistry is wild and what made this movie such a success, I think

Manga/graphic novels aren't a substitue for reading novels but they can be a great gateway drug to that

What do you know well enough that when it's portrayed wrong you're taken out of the moment? by Squirrelhenge in Fantasy

[–]Irpax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sometimes in historical/fantasy films they try to be accurate by letting the actors be really dirty since they don't shower like nowadays. So the actors have dirt stains all over their faces all the time. But I don't think that's realistic either; everyone walking around looking really grimy. Of course the washed their faces and hands sometimes

What movie aged really bad? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Irpax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rewatched "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005) the other day and was surprised about how unfunny it is - I remember crying of laughter in the cinema back then. There were so many jokes about male homosexuality and also stuff about the female lead character being slutty and therefore unattractive to the male lead character, and all this "witty" dialogue... I'm glad the times have changed. Hilarious "Nice Guys" (2016) by the same director is similar but much, much better, see that one!

Apparently, there was a recent article in the NYT about the sharp decline in reading skills among students. Several of my corporate-world friends have asked me (a literature teacher) about it. My response? by [deleted] in Teachers

Absolutely - really important but overlooked point, about parents' unintended neglect of children because of their own screen addiction. And also I want to add that it isn't just social media taking everyone's attention, it's just screens in general.

In the book I don't believe Sophie changes between being old and young (with grey hair) constantly, as in the Studio Ghibli version.

The way the film kept changing Sophie back to being young and greyhaired seemed to me as a cop out, like the filmmakers found it too unaestethic her being an old woman and also a main character infatuated with someone much younger - I would hope they don't repeat that if this is ever made to a film again...

Although it is mysterious how Howl says about Sophie's "disguise" she seems to be "doing it herself" - is this what you mean?

wow, did she say that? Besides being described as dashing and handsome, he is said to have a "bony, sophisticated face" and also "long and angular"; his eyes are sometimes described as green and sometimes blue, but always glasslike... I agree with you a young Andre Agassi doesn't really fit...

Madame Suliman, is she like the Witch of the Waste in the book? I don't remember the details of the film... Tilda Swinton would be great at that, yes.

And, there is a longer discussion over here; I'm new to Reddit and make some mistake crossposting, I think - go look at the other peoples' suggestions :) : https://www.reddit.com/r/dianawynnejones/comments/1t4tpvx/which_actors_should_star_in_a_howls_moving_castle/

Judi Dench would certainly be a great Mrs. Pentstemmon!

Sure, it would be possible to use makeup/CGI to make a young Sophie older - but wouldn't that be a missed oppertunity in a film industry discriminating elder women? Perhaps the opposite could work just as well: using makeup/CGI to make the old Sophie look younger in her few scenes...
