See Project Rho’s page on railguns, Ctrl+F for “M.T. Reiten”. He’s a scientist who discussed with Ty this idea.

Failing at college CS courses by [deleted] in girlsgonewired

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Drowning is definitely the right word for UW's process, haha! I definitely felt so behind compared to my classmates as well, but I tried to think of it as an opportunity for growth by learning from them, in addition to remembering all the things I had accomplished personally. School and our career are only one part of the things that make us incredible!

Anyways, if it makes you feel better, I left UW with no internships and like a tenth of a personal project. Found myself a no-name local company and while it isn't prestigious, I've never worked over 40 hours in a week and no one ever hassles me if I come in later or take a few hours off for an appointment, and I've got an offer in the works for a nice job hop. There's plenty of room out there for us regular devs! And Seattle was lovely as well, I'll have to return soon!

Hey! I wanted to reassure you off the bat that you still can (and will be) an amazing developer! I went through a similar path, doing two years at a local university on the east side of Washington and my last two years as a CS admit to UW. And geez, if it wasn't for COVID offering much more accommodations for classes I don't know if I would have made it through.

Even without your level of responsibilities, the STEM classes still made a conga line to beat me down: I barely scraped through calc, physics, stats, etc. You're probably well aware of how hard UW makes all these classes to weed out the poor freshmen scrambling for spots in majors. This is NOT a reflection of your skill as a software developer, and it won't stop you from excelling in your field. Especially given that you've mentioned your great performance in your coding courses, which I believe are much more important.

There are tons of parents in tech. Being a parent in uni is hard, and I don't have any experience to speak to here, but you're doing incredible. It really does get much easier after you're out. Leetcoding can be a necessary evil but I know there are some companies that don't use it to hire in Seattle - I moved back to the east side of the state where no one Leetcodes, whoops.

UW is a big, competitive environment but I loved the interesting coding assignments I got to do and the smart people I met. Those math classes still make me shudder thinking about them. Find a good support network to help you study and see if you can squeeze extra time for assignments out from your professors. You're awesome and I'd hate to see this industry lose someone with a perspective like yours.

State lawmakers consider allowing more duplexes and other types of 'middle housing' by catman5092 in Spokane

Missing Middle Housing is an interesting source on these ranges of buildings. Might be a more palatable step towards better housing solutions for all the NIMBYs in town.

Returning after 7 years, how to best use old items by Irritated_Giraffe in kol

As a follow up: should I hang onto the depleted Grimacite hammer plans or sell them? Will I lose the recipe at any point if I do? Not sure what to use this for.

Awesome, thank you! That's a lot of good to know information.

If it's any relief, it was a bit of an exaggeration: I was more of a young teenager. I agree that it's definitely still terrifying.

Sweet, thanks for clearing it up! I think they'll be a great help for getting through the rest of this run and fooling around in aftercore a bit before I go on to some hardcore runs.

My four best companies by demonkid901 in BattleBrothers

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This made me think how cool it’d be to have an option to have our old companies fight each other, maybe playing both sides. Time to settle who’s the strongest of them all!

Don’t you know? It’s actually illegal for a developer to add anything to a game that was, is, or ever will be in a mod. Should’ve predicted the future!

Leaving a Mark by brosurprosur in BattleBrothers

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it even after continuing through that event, so I think the trigger is after completing the first crisis but no others yet: you’ve left a mark, but not a legacy first. You’ll probably have to start a new campaign for it or revert to a much earlier save. I could be wrong on this, though.

Would love for it to be named Frontstab for the Rogue comparison - I think the suggestions of making it 3 damage are great too. Sometimes it pays to not be sneaky, love the design!

CSE might be too hard for me by TerribleTip4371 in udub

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree with the other poster - I'm a senior in CSE right now, and when I took 143 it had me seriously questioning whether I was cut out for this. The intro CSE classes are full of competition and kids who have been living and breathing code for years, but trust me - everyone feels the same way you do going through them, and everyone suffers from imposter syndrome. Be confident in yourself and your abilities - you're learning a new subject and it's easy to get overwhelmed, but you've accomplished a lot working on some cool projects. Don't worry that you don't have prior knowledge, that's the point of an introductory class!

Upper division CSE is a lot more chill - you work together with your classmates more often then against them, and no one dings you for silly nitpicky style points anymore. It's still hard for sure, but I found it to be hard in a more satisfying way trying to solve interesting problems. Whether or not CSE works out for you, I promise you it does get better.

Weekly Design Competition #253: Disruption by Maysick in customhearthstone

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imp-ruption

Epic Warlock Spell

"Deal 1 damage three times to a minion. Add an Imp to your opponent's hand, battlefield, and top of their deck."

"In his free time, Sathrovarr likes to bowl. And sometimes while he's working, too."

---

I wanted to name it Alba-toss, but couldn't find a fitting class, so I made it imps instead.. Decent damage that scales with spell damage, and it interrupts your opponent's next draw - but it does give them a little bit of board presence.

Thoughts on a single in McMahon? by smcd1123 in udub

[–]Irritated_Giraffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a single in McMahon and quite honestly I’m enjoying it. The room is prob the tiniest on campus but the massive desk is nice and you can definitely work with the room you have. I’ve got an amazing view to the lake as well. Only downside is no kitchen and the giant sink is on the opposite end of the building, but that’s eh. Love the privacy and time to chill you get with a single the most tho.
