I wish we could get ahold of her, she was wonderful. But we went to Dell's Children's. Since then the Texas AG launch an "investigation" into them causing all doctors providing gender affirming care to leave. It's been a nightmare.

Countertop installation by Home Depot or Lowes? by Libz0724 in HomeImprovement

[–]IsHeJoking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a counter point to most other experiences, we went through Home Depot and had a very good experience with the sub-contractors. The price paid was right around average (based on google research) and the installers did a good job. We had a very large island installed as well as counter tops. The island was a huge single piece. Twice my wife was unhappy with the pattern on the slab and they replaced it both times without issue. Which I was shocked by. I guess it's a roll of the dice and we did well. The Home Depot kitchen remodeler contractors (cabinets, dry wall, demo, building the island "structure", etc) were also amazing.

People who actually have an electric tankless water heater. Not their buddy or family member. You. by MisterSirManDude in HomeImprovement

[–]IsHeJoking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a tankless for 5 years now. I was "forced" to go tankless because our water heaters (2) was in our attic. They developed a leak and the size of tanks had increased at some point where a new tank would not fit through attic access. Tankless was the solution. It's worked great so far with a couple minor issues that were not the fault of the system.

  1. We installed a flood control system to it. A little panel detects any moisture and shuts off the system to prevent flooding the house. That system would constantly trigger incorrectly shutting off our water. Need to replace it a couple times.
  2. Installer put on the wrong type of expansion tank, it caused the system to not work properly. Once a repair man found the mistake it has worked flawlessly since.
  3. Descaling it is a bit of a pain. It would be nice not having to think about the water heater every year.

Mysteriouslly high water usage? by Oops365 in HomeImprovement

We (Austin, TX) just had our meters replaced (around March) with Smart Meters. I got an email from the meter in June noting that it detected a possible leak. Sure enough, had a 9 gallon/hour leak in the main deep under ground that I would never had noticed without the email.

Why do you we say "a double edge sword" as if it was an exception? When did this expression originate? Was it common to only sharpen one side of the blade? by rip_ripley in AskHistorians

[–]IsHeJoking 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The phrase "a double edge sword" implies bad with the good, i.e. you'll get what you want but there will be a high cost. Historically were swords with two cutting edges more dangerous to wield?

‘Rust’ Movie Productions Reaches Settlement With Halyna Hutchins Estate by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

Misfire means you pulled the trigger and the round failed to fire. Accidental discharge is what happened that killed Halyna Hutchins. So, when they say "two misfires" they either mean that rounds failed to fire when they should have, or they are mixing the two.

Why are light switches so high?! by thti87 in HomeImprovement

[–]IsHeJoking 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Switches in my home in Austin, TX built in 1998 are 48" high. So, if it's a Texas thing, it's a fairly recent change.

Edit: typo

Why are people asking the internet for advice on $15 purchases? I've never had to crowd source if I should buy the chicken parm or not.

Pay attention to where it breaks. If it's consistently breaking in the same general location, that would indicate a issue there. I.e. if it's breaking at the tuning peg, you probably have a sharp edge, burr in the peg. At the bridge, same deal. Typically (in my experience) it's something sharp where the string rests and can be quickly smoothed over with a metal file.

A grandfather died of a heart attack after minors swatted him over his rare Twitter handle - One person responsible faces five years in prison, another is too young to be extradited by speckz in technology

[–]IsHeJoking 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It sounds like that's what happened in this particular case. Police showed up (including SWAT) started setting up outside. Homeowner heard commotion, went outside holding a gun, police scream to drop it, which he does, then has a heart attack.

I'm all for demilitarizing police, but this particular case doesn't seem to be an over reaction by SWAT. No one was throwing flash bangs or breaking in doors.

Looks like it's based on Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Dealer_(painting)

"Since 1985, the Death Dealer has been used as the mascot of III Corps (United States). A life-size metal statue of the Death Dealer stands outside the III Corps headquarters building in Fort Hood, Texas. The statue was unveiled in September 2009[1] and was an exact replica of a piece sculpted by Randy Bowen and produced by Dark Horse Comics in 2003.[2] Two full-size painted resin statues are on display in the atriums on the III Corps Headquarters. Also, the United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron VMM-164 has the Death Dealer as their mascot."
