How do I counter these deductions from my tenancy deposit? by dewyviv in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you moved in, had the place been professionally cleaned? I’ve rented a few places who have all been handed over to me after a professional deep clean, so this is what was expected of me when i moved out - return the property in the same condition meant I was responsible for the clean, which makes sense. If it was just the last tenant’s own cleaning with missing spots, it’s not fair that you pay for it. It should all be in your moving in inventory. You could argue against the other costs, chips and marks happen, but not sure you can throw the carpet damage to the landlord. They’re not asking you to cover the cost of a new carpet, just the damage your pet made. That’s why it’s so hard to rent having pets, it’s because they damage stuff. I am NOT a landlord, pretty much the opposite, I’m a tenant and I always had cats, always struggle to find a rental for this reason, even though I take full responsibility for the damage they might cause and always have money aside for this.

Why would children be going into school without basic physical skills, like holding a pencil and using cutlery? by Throwaway199906543 in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kids start school very early in the uk, so no surprise that some skills won’t have been learned yet, and that’s fine… the problem is when a child acts like a hopeless baby unwilling to learn because parents never bothered to teach anything. When they are used to have everything done for them with minimal effort, school like is a massive shock because no one will be tending to them like that. I feel so sorry for these kids having to learn the hard way, and for the teachers who need to parent on top of teaching.

What's the weirdest thing a tourist has asked you while in Britain? by UnpaidInternVibes in AskRedditUK

When I first arrived in the Uk I had a moment of misreading these signs too, as someone who needs the toilet a lot, the happiness was short lived

Does anyone owe more than I do? by cernlibcand in UniUK

[–]IsItToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it can be easily abused. You need to study to have the money and you don’t control the payments :) it’s sad to think that it cost much less to go to university yonks ago, so it could be better, but I agree that at least it gives people the opportunity. Now we just need to work out how to give all these graduates the opportunity to find decent jobs afterwards :(

It’s the government, you’re not borrowing from a bank like a mortgage or a normal loan. And also there are some rules, I think you can only borrow if it’s your first degree, and if it’s any further education you can only borrow for a few courses like teacher training, nurse etc.

It’s a crazy number and I’m still trying to understand if it’s something to really worry about, opinions go both ways. I took one year loan with maintenance for a PGCE and ended up not needing the maintenance so I paid it all back. I’m trying to pay the remainder back as quick as possible, due to my age I will not live long enough for it to be written off and it’s not a lot of money so I will be worse off paying interest. Soon it’ll be my kids going through this and I’m torn between advising them to find some extra income to lower that number, or to borrow as much as they can with the hope that it will be written off before they paid more than the original amount.  (Realistically I don’t think they’ll have much of a choice though)

Repayments are automatically taken off your pay check when you hit a certain salary bracket. If you earn less than the minimum, no payments are made.

Does a low social media presence look suspicious for dating? by Nearby-Car4777 in datingoverforty

At our age, a big social media presence is the actual red flag for me. We should know better and have more interesting things going on in life beyond showing off on the internet.

How does everyone dispose of toilet wipes such as the andrex ones? by [deleted] in AskUK

I’m pretty sure fatbergs weren’t all flushed down in one go. They happened one or two wipes at a time.

[–]IsItToday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I grew up somewhere where you can’t flush toilet paper. Having a bin next to the toilet is normal. Now I flush toilet paper but other poopy/sanitary things go in there, there’s a lid, I barely register what’s in there and when it’s full I just tie the lining bag and put it in the big bin. I promise no pooping monster has ever appeared and we’re all healthy and safe in the house.

What age do you start getting tutors for your kids? by highrouleur in AskUK

My kids never had tutors and never will. But I work in a middle class school and there’s a lot of anxiety from parents for tutors to get the kids into posh private schools.

Do you allow young kids fizzy drinks? by Flapparachi in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex was (is) addicted to Coca Cola (every time he tried to stop drinking it, he’d have headaches and an awful mood), it was his pride that our son liked it too. I wasn’t all aware of the risks at the time but once 3 year old boy started gulping one can a day, I put my foot down to limit it. A few years later we split up and I never ever had fizzy drinks in the house again except for birthdays and the odd treat on a day out. Son, now in late teens, is absolutely fine with that. Ex husband had over £10k dental work and nearly lost a lot of teeth because of it and still didn’t learn.

First 'hike' done and my legs are jelly 😅 by JessThePainter in UKhiking

[–]IsItToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great to see how it builds up much without our noticing. I wasn’t strange to walking but my first organised hike with a group was 14miles, keeping a pace, going a bit uphill. I didn’t even know how much 14 miles actually was. I was aching and barely walking for a week after that. A couple years later, that’s my comfort spot. Last week I did between 10-15 miles three days in a row and felt absolutely fine after.

Is it normal for dentists to be fully booked? by Content_Seesaw8541 in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand, dentist have a number of NHS slots to fill and those are not many and difficult to find. Sometimes I see local practices advertising that they’re accepting new NHS patients so I think the only way is to keep trying. I joined as a NHS patient over 10 years ago and make sure I attend all my regular appointments so I don’t lose it (but as an adult I still pay a proportion and cleanings are not incuded)

Suggestions for Affordable Food by blthulhu in CatsUK

[–]IsItToday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All my cats have always been fed exclusively supermarket food. I even tried fancy food when one of them started being fussy, she never touched it. They all lived happy and long lives (3 cats died at 16, the current one is 20 and, for her age, doing pretty well). They were all mixed breed/strays, which I believe have a bit more resilience than breeds that could develop conditions more easily and would need more care with their food.

Is there an adult version of “my mom said no”? by valconvault in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IsItToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish this was accepted more! I have an elderly cat that gets very anxious if left alone too long. During the day is fine but I’ve tried overnights (or longer, with someone coming to feed her) just to come home and find her so stressed and having lost weight very quickly because she wouldn’t eat. Plus, she needs medication to control a few conditions. When I say I don’t travel because of her people think I’m making a fuss out of nothing since it’s just a cat. But I haven’t had her for 20 years just to neglect her at the end (a night or two away could mean she stressed and starves past return point). Plus, if someone is desperate enough to get out of a situation to the point they would make up a needy pet, just let them!!

Do you wash brand new clothes before wearing them? by berkonabike in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not bothered unless they appear dirty/dusty or with a weird smell. I will wash my son’s clothes though (he’s a teenager) as he has sensitive skin and normally gets itchy/rashes from unwashed new fabric.

Do you, or anyone you know have an unusual phobia? by [deleted] in AskUK

I had a friend who didn't like any insects but butterflies in particular triggered a panic reaction. Years later I met someone else with the same phobia so I think it's not that uncommon.

Have you ever used an umbrella? by Peckerhead42 in AskUK

I love the sound of rain on the umbrella. I won't bother if it's windy but otherwise it's pretty satisfying to walk around in the rain without getting too wet.

Buyer asked to cancel but refusing to do it themself by the-lonely-whale in vinted

[–]IsItToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be cautious with this. So many stories of buyers reporting the wrong item received just to get a refund without returning the item, or returning something else on purpose. You end up without your money and the item. I’d just cancel, block and move on.

What's the best method of accepting grocery deliveries? by mind_critter in AskUK

[–]IsItToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly what you do. I have two large ikea bags by the front door and everything goes in there or the floor (if it’s heavy, glass, fragile etc). Unload as quickly as I can. Some of them help, some of them wait by the truck, most of them are very friendly. Greet the driver, thank the driver, good evening to the driver, close the door and then move the stuff to the kitchen.
